FINAL REPORT NOC LITERATURY 2013 ZÁVĚREČNÁ ZPRÁVA I. About Literature Night 7th year of Literature Night, a literary happening organized by Czech Centres in cooperation with European cultural institutes from the EUNIC platform and cultural departments of foreign representations, took place on May 15, 2013 at Prague 7 where the boroughs of Letná, Holešovice and Bubeneč meet. Contemporary European literature in Czech translation was presented by well known actors at 18 venues. As every year, the event took place on the eve of Book World, Prague international book fair and literary festival. The aim of Literature Night was to give the public an insight into contemporary European literature through a series of public readings at unconventional, attractive and usually inaccessible venues of Prague 7. In relation to Literature Night, two of there presented authors came to Prague: the German writer Wilhelm Genazio and the Swiss writer Catalin Dorian Florescu. Literature Night in Prague, presenting contemporary literature to the broad public, was this year a part of the European Literature Nights project initiated by Czech Centres and co-organized by partner organizations from Brno, Bucharest, Dublin, Lisbon, Vilnius and Wroclaw. These partners organize Literature Night in their respective cities according to the model known by the Prague audience. Thanks to the substantial support of the grant programme EU Culture the readings could take place also abroad and due to the cooperation with Union of Librarians also in 8 other Czech cities (Česká Lípa, Hradec Králové, Cheb, Kroměříž, Liberec, Kutná Hora, Tábor, Vsetín). Literature Night is not only a series of book readings or an experience of a great actors’ performances: it is also a synthesis of different kinds of art. Readings are often accompanied by music, street art (such as graffiti in 2012 in Prague) or the original literary path consisting of visually adapted Jaroslav Rudiš’s text Potichu in Letenské sady, Prague. This event interconnected Literature Night with the pioneer project Prague City of Literature, coordinated by the City Library Prague. The concept of Literature Night by Czech Centres has been an inspiration for other European states. Literature Nights abroad are organized mostly by local Czech Centres, local EUNIC platforms or other local organizations. Following the Czech pattern, encounters of literatures of small and large European countries, authors and translators take place also for instance in Berlin, Brussels, London, Amsterdam, Munich, Florence, St. Petersburg, Warsaw and Vienna. In Slovakia, Ukraine and Bulgaria, the readings take place in several cities at once. Project goals stimulate the public’s interest in contemporary literature in an unconventional and creative way; present the contemporary European literature recently translated to Czech highlight the importance of multilingualism – translations and publications of books from major as well as minor languages actively engage urban environment into the organization of an important literary event through the project draw the attention to the attractivity of less frequented boroughs – relationship between cultural projects and cultural revitalization of the boroughs throught the grant programme EU Culture diffuse the idea and the model of Literature Night into other states (Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania) 22 NOC LITERATURY 2013 ZÁVĚREČNÁ ZPRÁVA Date of the event: May 15, 2013, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM Venue: Prague 7 - Letná Organization team Taťjana Langášková – coordinator of the European Literature Nights project Jolana Součková – dramaturgy and production of Literature Night Prague, PR Kamil Pavelka – the European Literature Nights grant Anna Hrabáčková – publicity: printed materials, web page Petra Jungwirthová – marketing and PR Ondřej Kavalír – dramaturgy of the texts 23 Overview: Belgium – Wallonia – Brussels Jean-Philippe Toussaint: La Salle de bain Studio Hrdinů Karel Dobrý Belgium – Flanders Erwin Mortier: Marcel Hussite Church Miloslav König France Alexis Jenni: L’Art franҫais de la guerre Gallery of Modern Art AVU Roman Zach The Netherlands Arthur Japin: De zwarte met het witte hart Studio Alta Otakar Brousek ml. Literature Night in other Czech cities Since its first year, Literature Night has without any doubt gained a place among the most significant literary events in Prague. Project’s reputation and active cooperation among participating cultural institutes, the EUNIC cluster and partners in the Czech Republic and abroad had lead not only to the increasing number of visitors and interest of the professional as well as the general public in the project, but also to the successful expansion of the project into other cities. The fact that the Union of Czech Librarians has approached Czech Centres with the aim to cooperate testifies to the success of the project. 25 Total number of visitors 1 Municipal library Česká Lípa 54 2 Library of the City of Hradec Králové 262 3 Municipal library in Cheb 327 4 Library of Kroměřížsko 394 5 Municipal library Kutná Hora 100 6 Regional scientific library in Liberec 184 7 Municipal library Tábor 371 8 Masaryk’s public library Vsetín 115 In the above listed cities, the project was organized according to the Prague model: the same selection of texts and books, readings taking place in 30-minute intervals at several venues paralelly (libraries, a tram, galleries, a museum, a castle, a chateau, a fire station etc.). Final evaluation Thanks to the excellent cooperation of all project partners – cultural institutes and Embassies representing their respective countries in Prague – and thanks to the invaluable support by all partners, the project was again realized with success. In 2013 just as in the previous years, attendance has remained around 10.000 visitors. However, this year earned better feedback by the audience in regards to the selected venues – Prague 7 offered a wide variety of interesting spaces suitable for larger audience (see page 3) so there were no queues and an average visitor managed to attend at least 7 readings. By including the Literature Night in Prague into a European project and thus making use of its potential to transcend cultural borders, the project helped to spread good reputation of the Czech Republic abroad. Even though the European Literature Nights project has not ended yet (there is still going to be Literature Night in Lithuania and Poland in September), it can already be said that Literature Night is an inspiration for international cultural organizations and brings joy to international audience regardless of the country of origin. Literature Night 2014 will take place on May 14, 2014 at Žižkov, Prague. We are looking forward to welcoming you there! 216
