Ghazal Ka Safar — A Musical Journey
Ghazal Ka Safar — A Musical Journey
Urdu has been a language of poetry in South Asia for two centuries, and has
developed a rich tradition in a variety of poetic genres. The Ghazal represents the
most popular form of subjective poetry, while the Nazm exemplifies the objective
kind, often reserved for narrative, descriptive, didactic or satirical purposes.
A common and popular form of music in the Sub-Continent, Ghazal is also a poetic
recitation. However, today it is commonly conceived of as an Urdu song whose prime
importance is given to the lyrics.
Ghazal Ka Safar is conceived as a show which would revisit the evolution of this form
of poetry and recall some popular masterpieces through live rendition on stage. It
provides a musical visage to the poetry of the maestros, reintroducing this most
popular light classical musical form to the audiences.
Poets like Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, Daagh Dehlvi, Momin Khan Momin, Akbar
Allahabadi, Makhdoom Mohiddeen, Ahmad Faraaz among others are featured in this
show.
A nostalgic trip for those who have savored the poetry of the subcontinent through
various recorded versions, the show also showcases some of the popular compositions
over the years sung by several eminent artistes like Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Begum Akhtar and Jagjit Singh to name a few. The show also recognizes the contribution of Ghazals from Hindi films in films like Bazaar, Umra O Jaan and of course the
Lata-Madan Mohan duo.

SOUTH ASIAN PERFORMING ARTS FOUNDATION (SAPAF)
South Asian Performing Arts Foundation (SAPAF) was founded in 2006 as a 501 (C)(3), non-profit organization
registered in Oklahoma. Its purpose, as visualized by board members, is to share the extraordinarily rich and
diverse South Asian artistic and cultural traditions with audiences in Oklahoma. The philosophy underlying
the organization is to promote multicultural awareness and diversity among as broad a constituency as possible,
and bring communities together through innovative programs in the literary, visual, and performing arts. To this
end, programming has been aimed at entertaining and educating a wide cross-section of people and including
in particular youth and seniors. Since its inception SAPAF has brought world renowned musicians, dancers, and
poets to Tulsa to introduce local audiences to the ancient and modern, classic and folk art of the Indian
subcontinent. In its inaugural series in 2006, Rhythms of India, SAPAF presented the three main classical dance
traditions of India, Kathak, Odissi, and Bharatanatyam. In subsequent years, performances have included dance
dramas; sarod, violin and percussion recitals; contemporary Indian fusion bands; and Hindi and Urdu poetry
reading. Among the luminaries that SAPAF has arranged to perform in Tulsa are names like the Grammy Award
nominated tabla player Zakir Hussein and sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, singer Yesudas and dancer Priyadarshini
Govind, all globally acclaimed performers and recipients of several international and national awards and
citations.
Through free lecture demonstrations and workshops conducted by such visiting artists, along with a generous
complimentary and discounted ticket policy for students and seniors, SAPAF has made a special effort to expand
the reach of its programming and make it accessible and affordable. The increasing popularity and visibility of its
programming is a testimony to the success of its efforts.
