Obituary
Frances Mary Woolf
Kenneth Eric Snowdon
Ms. Frances Mary Woolf of Blairmore, Alberta, and formerly of Coleman, passed away on May 5, 2012 at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing
Care Centre, at the age of 90 years.
Frances was born on June 27, 1921, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, to
Louis and Lottie Taylor and grew up with brother Louie (Jr.) and sister
Eileen. She was blessed with a family and delighted in her three
boys, Garth, Ron and Russell. With her good sense of humour and
her own hairdressing business in Coleman in the 1960s and `70s, she
was well known and admired. She lived in Tecumseh Manor from
1991 to 2008, before moving into the Continuing Care Centre where
the family is very grateful for the kindness and compassion shown to
Frances during her stay.
Frances loved to travel; opportunities opened up for her to visit Britain,
Portugal and the Caribbean, but the Crowsnest Pass still had a special place in her heart. She loved being
by water, swimming, canoeing and camping. Artistic by nature, she derived great pleasure from collecting
wild flowers from the bush, pressing them and then using them in the greeting cards which she sold locally.
Gardening and visiting outdoors with her neighbors gave her great pleasure. Quite the seamstress, she
was much in demand for making dresses and alterations in our community. Frances was always a community-minded person and enjoyed volunteering for various events and gatherings and was a proud member
of the Eastern Star and Royal Canadian Legion in Blairmore.
Frances is survived by her sons: Garth (Velda) Woolf, Ron Woolf and Russell James (Eileen) Woolf; her
grand-children: Kurt (Leanne) Woolf, Mark (Paula) Woolf, Katie (Jade) Bainbridge, Pam Dreeshen, Annette
(Mike) Reilly, Vicki Woolf, Alicia (Brad) Large, Natasha (Mike) Lichtenberger, Cody (Alicia) Woolf; her greatgrand-children: Carter, Ivy, Brycen, Kameron, Luke, Gwen, Taryen, Tianna, Raegan, Rylee, Reese; her
niece Joan MacKay; and her extended family and long-time friends, Betty and Brian Illingsworth.
She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Lottie Taylor; her brother, Louie Taylor (Jr.); and her sister,
Eileen MacKay.
With respect for the family’s wishes, a private gathering in honour of the late Frances Woolf will occur later
this summer.
Condolences may be registered at [email protected]. Donations in memory of the late Frances
Mary Woolf may be directed to the Crowsnest Pass S.P.C.A., PO Box 725, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0.
(1920-2012)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth
Snowdon of Coleman, Alberta, on April 19, 2012.
Kenneth was born on November 27, 1920, in Coleman, Alberta where
he resided until his passing. In the autumn of 1937, Ken met Pollyanna
Gushul and after a courtship of three years were married in January
4, 1941. They raised three children during trying economic times and
appreciated what they had rather than lament for what they had not.
They celebrated 71 years of marriage.
Ken demonstrated the personal satisfaction that resulted from hard
work and determination. He was truly an inspiration to his family.
Ken’s enterprising nature afforded him a versatile and interesting
working career. When the opportunity arose, he furthered his education with courses in Calgary in building
construction and renovation, and this knowledge and his experience in the various trades culminated in his
successful appointment as Building Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass as well as inspector for ID#5 Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP).
He will be fondly remembered by those who knew him and dearly missed in our community. May he be at
peace in the arms of the Lord.
Ken is survived by his loving wife, Polly Snowdon; his sons, Darryl (Judi) Snowdon of Lundbreck, and Ken
Snowdon Jr. of Pincher Creek; his daughter, Diane Hakze of Bellevue; his grandchildren, Jennifer Hakze
of Bellevue, Sandy Hakze of Calgary, and Mark Hakze of Bellevue; his great grandchild, Tony Hakze of
Bellevue, and his step-brothers, Bob and Gilbert Snowdon of Abbotsford, BC; numerous nieces and
nephews, extended family and friends.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Eva Snowdon, his sister, Gwen Lewis, and his brother,
Doug Snowdon.
With respect for Ken’s final wishes, no funeral services will be held. Donations in memory of the late Kenneth
Snowdon may be made to the Alberta Heart & Stroke Fdn. Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 4K7. Condolences may be registered at [email protected].

Obituary
Joyce Evelyn Girhiny
(1931-2012)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Joyce
Evelyn Girhiny, beloved wife of the late Michael (“Mike”) Girhiny of
Coleman, Alberta. Joyce passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the age of 80 years.
Joyce was born on June 16, 1931, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, to Albert
and Mary Drews. She loved her childhood on the family farm and
from an early age, she was able to see the beauty of this world and
her ability as an artist flourished. After her family moved to Coleman,
great blessings continued to come Joyce’s way, particularly in the form
of a young man from the Pass, “Mike” Girhiny. The two of them became
inseparable companions and they were married in Coleman on July 16, 1949.
They were further blessed with two children whom they dearly cherished. Joyce
and Mike celebrated 58 years of marriage and devotion.
Full of vigour and imagination, Joyce lived her life well and filled every day with enjoyment. Generous, kind
and gentle, she was devoted to her beloved husband and family, and then quite naturally extended her
loving care to her grandchildren and extended family. Her entrepreneurial, hard-working spirit allowed her
to open her own furniture and art gallery in Coleman with Mike, called Crowsnest Galleries, where she sold
her well-known paintings, did custom framing of pictures and sold Roxton furniture. She derived much
pleasure from reading books and from teaching art classes here in the Pass and Sparwood, BC. She enjoyed socializing, picnics, camping and traveling on vacations with her loved ones and friends. Beside her
passion for painting, other avenues for her creativity included sewing, knitting, crocheting, canning and gardening. In her earlier years of marriage, Joyce was very active in the Coleman United Church and taught
Sunday school each Sunday morning.
Mourning the loss of this lovely lady are her devoted children, Glen (Kim) Girhiny of Coleman and Gayle
(John) Desjardins of Fernie, British Columbia; her five grandchildren: Sean (Nadia) Girhiny, Caitlin Girhiny
and Lisa, Michael and Krista Desjardins; her four great-grandchildren, Drayten, Daeghan, Kamrynn and
Kaitlynn; her sister-in-law Rose Drews of Abbotsford, British Columbia; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband Mike; her brothers Ernie Drews, Jimmy Drews, Robert
Drews, William Drews; her sister Agnes Schurman; her brothers-in-law Ed Schurman and Frank Girhiny;
her sisters-in-law Bert Drews, Helen Drews and Isabel Girhiny; and her parents, Albert and Mary Drews.
A private graveside service for Joyce Girhiny will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in
memory of the late Joyce Girhiny may be made to the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, (Bag 1, Blairmore, AB, T0K 0E0). Condolences may be registered at [email protected].
