During Joint-ERG Build Day
More than 20 employees representing the
shipyard’s five Employee Resource Groups
(ERG), spent Saturday, Nov. 21 caulking,
painting and hammering at a Habitat for
Humanity home under construction on Moores
Lane in Newport News. This is the 13th year
Newport News Shipbuilding is sponsoring a
Habitat for Humanity home.
“Giving back to the community is a major
objective for all our organizations,” said
Miranda Williams, a member of HOLA. “It
always feels great to be able to help out in
the community and it’s even more powerful
when AMSEC and Newport News Shipbuilding
employees can come together and make a
difference.”
The day was billed as a joint-ERG build day.
Members of the African American Shipbuilders
Association (AASA), Hispanic Outreach and
Leadership Alliance (HOLA), Shipbuilders of
Huntington Ingalls Professionals (SHIPs),
Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG)
and Women in Shipbuilding Enterprises (WiSE)
were encouraged to volunteer their time and skills.
Mary McDermott, a member of WiSE,
brought her daughter Melanie to join the effort.
The McDermotts assisted the carpenter with
installing molding for the home’s windows and
base boards. “I enjoy Do-It-Yourself projects
and working with my hands, so I thought this
was a great project my daughter and I could do
together,” said McDermott.

In the early morning hours of Oct. 23,
shipbuilders on the aircraft carrier John F.
Kennedy (CVN 79) accomplished an unusual
feat, precisely placing a 979-ton superlift in
between two other units. The team had placed
in smaller upper deck units on Gerald R. Ford
(CVN 78) but never something even close to this
big. With just 5/16 inch of clearance on either
side, the giant structure was lifted into place in
three hours, a testament to careful planning and
coordination between trades.

NNS Opens New PCU Facility
Newport News Shipbuilding opened the doors
to a new facility that will provide workspace
for the crews of Virginia-class submarine (VCS)
pre-commissioning units (PCUs) while their
submarines are under construction. The facility
is colocated with Newport News’ submarine
final outfitting and assembly facilities, thereby
increasing the crews’ ability to access and train
with the ship systems during the final stages of
construction.
To provide convenient offices and training space,
the building’s second floor provides separate
sections for the three PCU crews that are on-site
in an overlapping manner as a result of the
two-per-year VCS construction pace. In addition
to office space, each section includes hospital
corpsmen’s offices, classrooms, galleys and bunk
rooms for male and female sailors. The first floor

VCS Employees Complete Delaware’s AMR Module Ahead of Schedule
Earlier this month Virginia-class submarine (VCS) employees delivered
Delaware’s (SSN 791) auxiliary machinery room (AMR) module. The
delivery is the 18th consecutive AMR unit that the team has completed on
time or ahead of schedule.
“Not only has this team completed the unit in a timely manner, they have
also completed the work with first-time quality and with zero accidents,”
said Construction Supervisor Lee Gilliam. “They’ve worked together
across trades, taken ownership of their work, and pulled together to
overcome any obstacles standing in their way – I’m proud of them.”
Electrician Glenn Skinner (X31) said that communication and staying
organized have been the most important factors in regards to the team’s
success.
“By communicating with each other, we’re aware of what’s going on and
can help each other out when needed,” he said. “I feel like there’s a good
rapport across trades – everyone really cares about their work and are
working together with a ‘teamwork’ mind frame. Staying organized has
helped us remain safe and has also helped us stay on track because we
know exactly where materials are when we need them and potential trip
hazards aren’t an issue.”
Pipe Fitter Lloyd Newsome (X42) said looking out for each other is
key to remaining accident-free. “This was my first time working on an
AMR module,” he said. “Within the unit, there are many places that are
potential safety hazards if you aren’t paying attention. It’s nice to know
that my team has my back.”
Pipe Welders Reginald Whitehead (X18) and Michael Scott (X18)
believe that first-time quality is extremely important. “Getting things
done right the first time around is what we always aim for,” said Scott.
“It’s especially important on the AMR module because it’s the heart of the
boat. I like to think of it as if I’m building a car for my family – I want it to
be the very best it can be.”
Whitehead added, “I examine my welds and always aim for my next weld
to look better than my last,” he said.

Quality Craftsman of the Month Recognized
For the past six years, the Virginia-class Submarine (VCS) Program has
selected one craftsman each week of October to be recognized as the
“Quality Craftsman of the Week.” From the pool of weekly award winners,
one craftsman is then selected to receive the “Quality Craftsman of the
Month Award.” This year, the award went to Justin Clark (X18).
“Clark has been with the company for nearly five years, and has quickly
become one of the top ultrasonic testing (UT) welders in the VCS
Program,” said Lead General Foreman Keith Liakos. “The quality of his
work overall is outstanding, and recently, he completed a critical weld
repair on the pressure hull of Washington (SSN 787) This job had many
challenges and complications. In addition, there was sensitive equipment
on the opposite side of the hull, so Justin was limited to welding in six
second increments, each increment about ¾” in length. In total, he
deposited four layers of weld, with somewhere between 190–200 stops
and starts during the repair. The weld passed inspection the first time,
with the inspector stating that she saw absolutely nothing, and had to
shoot it twice to make sure. Justin’s performance in achieving

first- time quality helped to save countless hours of potential rework.

Fundraising and Solicitation
Reminder
As the holiday season approaches, many
departments are making plans to support
the local community. The Office of Corporate
Citizenship would like to remind all employees
that fundraising and solicitations at NNS are
governed by Corporate Policy CP H3. Below are
tips for staying within the guidelines:
• All fundraisers or solicitations must be
approved in advance by Tom Cosgrove,
manager of Corporate Citizenship. After
approval has been obtained, the fundraiser/
solicitation must also be approved by the
division vice president over the sponsoring
department or the executive sponsor of the
sponsoring Employee Resource Group (ERG).
Note: Each fundraising or solicitation request
is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• All fundraising or solicitations must
be sponsored by a department or ERG.
Individual shipbuilders cannot sponsor
fundraisers or solicitations.
• Fundraising solicitations cannot be done
on company time. It must be conducted
before or after work, during lunch or
designated breaks, or through flex time with
supervisors’ approval.
• Charitable fundraising and solicitations can
only be done for the types of organizations
that NNS as a company would support.
Fundraising/solicitations to benefit athletic
teams, religious or political organizations, or
individual shipbuilders will not be approved.
The benefitting organization must be a
501(c)(3) organization.
• Sales of items outside the shipyard gates are
tightly controlled and must be coordinated
with Judy Fundak (K18) through the
Department of Corporate Citizenship.
• Fundraisers and solicitations should be
limited in duration, allow for safeguarding of
funds raised, and can never make employees
feel pressured to contribute.
• Approvals of solicitations and fundraisers
will require a specific plan. Fundraisers/
solicitations will only be approved for specific
dates and programs. Departments/ERGs will
not be given blanket approval for ongoing
fundraising/solicitation effort.

“It was a real tight fit. There were a lot of eyes on the job and there was no room for error,” said
second shift Shipwright David Collins. “The lift was planned for third-shift to take advantage of
cooler temperatures that shrink the steel.”
The accomplishment was part of a larger plan, enabling other lifts to happen earlier and welding
work to be spread out more efficiently. Geoff Hummel, CVN 79 construction director, noted that
the team pulled off their plan despite technical challenges and adverse weather.
“The execution of this ‘squeeze play’ was the key piece of a larger plan developed by this team,” said
Hummel. “It allows work to progress ahead of schedule on the entire ship.”
Dimensional Control Technician Jay Rawls works on the third-shift team that helped make the
“squeeze play” possible. “I used to be a shipfitter catching the units off the crane,” said Rawls. “It
helps you really understand the importance of being accurate.”
Joe Sabol, trade director for Shipfitters and Dimensional Control, praised the cross-trade team for
the unique accomplishment: “Having the traditional structural erection techniques of the fitters
being combined with the metrology technology of Dimensional Control to meet this challenge is a
great thing to see and is exactly the performance we need on CVN 79.”

“As we have ramped up the Virginia-class submarine program to a rate of two boats a year,” said Ken
Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs, “we recognized that we needed a state-of-the-art building
capable of supporting submarine crews at this increased pace. This new facility is a great addition to
the shipyard and to the submarine program. It provides for a very efficient work environment, and
we’re confident it will continue to enhance our great teamwork with our teammate, the Navy crews
of the Virginia-class program.”
