STEWARDSHIP
2016 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL
Please Participate! Your Gift Makes a Difference!
This week, you are asked to review the 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) Opening
Report that you received with your bulletin today. The CMAA is much different than a one-time
special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a one-time gift or pledge your gift
over 10 months to support the good works of the diocese.
A gift to the CMAA will touch the lives of many in our diocese in a positive way. Each gift makes a
difference! Together, the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry and
services to those who need it most. As you take the time to review the tabloid and see all the work
enabled by the CMAA, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. We
were “Chosen by God’s Grace” and together we can give thanks to Him for our blessings through a
gift to the CMAA.
If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it or bring it to Mass next
weekend. For those of you who have not received the mailing, we will conduct our Commitment/InPew Weekend process at all Masses next weekend.
After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $114,507 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are
returned for use in our parish.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Tell the Story of Our Faith!
The Ministry of the Lector at Saint Joseph Parish
Training Session: February 6 ▪ 9:00 am
Lectors proclaim the word of God at liturgical celebrations. The lector is a liturgical minister who feeds
the assembly at the Table of God's Word. He or she tells the living story of our faith and is the
instrument through which God speaks to the gathered assembly. Lector formation includes a basic
introduction to Scripture as it relates to Sunday liturgy, familiarity with the Lectionary (the ritual book
for Scripture), and the practical considerations for public reading within the context of worship.
A training and formation session for those interested in the ministry of the lector will be held on
Saturday, February 6 at 9:00 am. Persons who are interested in becoming lectors should contact Roberta
Raike at [email protected] or Stephanie Palubicki at [email protected]. You may also

LOOKING TO GROW IN HOLINESS:
Join a like-minded group of women once a month.
We are Catholic Women of Jesus (CWOJ) an intimate group of women in love with Our Lord! We seek
to put Jesus Christ at the center of our lives and to emulate Him in the world. As a group, we are guided by the
Holy Spirit in our journey to become “little Christs”.
CWOJ was founded in the early summer of 2010 by Rosemary Deardurff. We have
experienced many beautiful moments in the Lord, and continue to share practical life
experiences reflecting our personal journey to sainthood. This year in 2016, we are meeting
once a month focusing on Fr. Albert’s book - Catching Fire Becoming Flame A Guide for Spiritual
Transformation.
Our activities will continue to include book studies, Catholic topic discussions, and going on
same-day pilgrimages. Please join us at St. Joseph Church Parish Center in the dining room at
4824 Highland Avenue in Downers Grove the first Sunday of every month from 1:30-3:30 pm
(walk-ins welcome). At 3:30 pm, we pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Contact Rosemary Deardurff at [email protected] to share your e-mail address in order
to receive the next month’s agenda, or call 630.776.7650 with any questions. We would love
to meet you!
Back to the Basics…
What We Believe
The Characteristics of Faith
Part I of IV
Faith is a grace
When St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus declared to him that this
revelation did not come “from flesh and blood,” but from “my Father who is in heaven.” Faith is a gift of God,
a supernatural virtue infused by him. “Before this faith can be exercised, man must have the grace of God to
move and assist him; he must have the interior helps of the Holy Spirit, who moves the heart and converts it
to God, who opens the eyes of the mind and ‘makes it easy for all to accept and believe the truth.’”
Faith is a human act
Believing is possible only by grace and the interior helps of the Holy Spirit. But it is no less true that believing
is an authentically human act. Trusting in God and cleaving to the truths he has revealed are contrary neither
to human freedom nor to human reason. Even in human relations it is not contrary to our dignity to believe
what other persons tell us about themselves and their intentions or to trust their promises (for example,
when a man and a woman marry) to share a communion of life with one another. If this is so, still less is it
contrary to our dignity to “yield by faith the full submission of... intellect and will to God who reveals,” and to
share in an interior communion with him.
In faith, the human intellect and will cooperate with divine grace: “Believing is an act of the intellect assenting
to the divine truth by command of the will moved by God through grace.”

PRO-LIFE CORNER
What will YOU pledge to
help end abortion?
The Bible shows us that prayer and fasting is important, that big changes come from pouring
oneself out to God in prayer, and that fasting helps to focus and intensify our prayer.
Can you spare an hour in prayer outside the local abortion clinic? Or, better, an hour each
week during the 40 Days for Life campaign? How about praying regularly from home
specifically to end abortion? Or perhaps committing to attend one or more extra Masses a
week? Or spending an hour a week in adoration with the Blessed Sacrament?
What can you fast from? What is so important to you
that it will really be a commitment to give up for 40 days?
Your morning coffee, with the cost donated to a pro-life
organization? An hour of mindless television, replaced with a rosary offered to end
abortion? A day free of surfing the soulless internet, replaced by prayerful vigil with others
outside the abortion clinic? A bread and water diet one day a week for 40 days, in memory
of those babies who never ate or drank?
Remember, if you truly want to change the world, you have to begin by changing yourself.
So start by doing something different…drastic…emphatic!

Gospel of Luke 5:1-11
February 7, 2016
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and
listening to the word of God, he was standing by the
Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there
alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked
and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the
boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to
put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat
down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he
had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into
deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon
said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night
and have caught nothing, but at your command I will
lower the nets.” When they had done this, they
caught a great number of fish and their nets were
tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other
boat to come to help them. They came and filled
both boats so that the boats were in danger of
sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the
knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I
am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of
fish they had made seized him and all those with him,
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon,
“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching
men.” When they brought their boats to the shore,
they left everything and followed him.
