or TV, here’s important news: A new
California law prohibits electronics –
anything with a plug or battery – from
being thrown in the trash. But don’t
worry. There are a number of local
recycling drop-off sites that will welcome your old electronics (electronics
should not be placed in your curbside
recycling bin). Take them to one of
the locations listed here.

COMMUNITY HAZARDOUS WASTE
COLLECTION CENTER
The Community Hazardous Waste Collection
Center is a joint project of the Santa Barbara
County Public Works Department, the Cities
of Santa Barbara and Goleta, and UC Santa
Barbara. The Collection Center, located on
the UCSB campus, is available to south Santa
Barbara County residents and businesses for
disposal of small quantities of hazardous
waste.
BUSINESS ELIGIBILITY
State and federal hazardous waste laws limit
the use of this type of hazardous waste
collection program to businesses that qualify
as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity
Generators (CESQG's). To qualify as a
CESQG a business must not produce more
than 100 kilograms (27 gallons or 220
pounds) of hazardous waste per month,
including a maximum of 1 kilogram (1 quart
or 2.2 pounds) of acutely hazardous waste.
Businesses that generate more than this
amount are required to use a licensed hazardous waste hauler to manifest and transport
their waste.
BUSINESS APPOINTMENTS
Businesses and all non-households (including
churches, schools, agencies, property management firms, and non-profit groups) must make an
appointment to use the Collection Center.
Appointments are scheduled for Fridays between
9:00 am and 3:00 pm. To make an appointment
call the County of Santa Barbara Public Works
Department at 882-3602, Monday through
Friday. Businesses and other non-households
may NOT use the Collection Center on the
weekend household collection days.
QUANTITY LIMITATIONS
A maximum of 27 gallons or 220 pounds of
hazardous waste will be accepted at the
Collection Center per business per month.
Historical accumulations may require the use
of a private hazardous waste disposal firm.

(processing/administration costs) plus a disposal
fee based on the types and quantities of waste
(see price list). Non-profit organizations
(501C.3) receive a 25% discount and the user fee

an additional 30% to cover facility costs.

TRANSPORTING & LABELING WASTE
Caution should be taken when transporting
hazardous waste to the Collection Center. If
possible, use the original product container or
label the container if contents are different than
listed. Cover all containers with a secure fitting
lid and pack containers upright in a leak-proof
box. You may be asked to provide a detailed
inventory if you have complex chemicals or
laboratory waste. State transportation laws limit
the amount of hazardous waste that may be
transported by businesses to 27 gallons or 220
pounds.
DISPOSAL FEES
To be eligible to use the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center, businesses must
be from Santa Barbara County (Lompoc
businesses are not eligible as the City offers a
CESQG program) and must qualify as a
CESQG. Businesses will be required to sign a
waiver stating that they are a CESQG.

Residuos Condicionalmente Exentos [Conditionally

Para calificar para usar el Centro Comunitario de

Every year in the State of California, we throw away tons of
electronic equipment that was state-of-the-art just a while ago.
Not only do these electronics contain valuable materials that can
be recycled, but they also contain hazardous materials that can
cause harm to humans and the environment. To help solve this
problem, our State’s legislators passed a law that makes it illegal
to dump electronic waste – anything with a plug or battery – in
the trash.

The Do’s and Don’ts of
Electronic Waste Recycling.
Discarded electronics contain hazardous materials and take
up limited landfill space. Plus, they contain valuable materials that can be used in new products. So a new state law
makes it illegal to throw them in the trash.

you want to dispose of them. In California, it is illegal and
unsafe to put hazardous waste in the regular trash.
Take these items to the Community
Hazardous Waste Collection Center
Store and transport all waste in secure containers
with tight-fitting lids, and place upright in cardboard
boxes during transport.

The Center is located on the UCSB Campus. Take
Hwy 101 to the Los Carneros Road exit. Take Los
Carneros toward the ocean, turn left on Mesa Road,
and follow the blue directional signs to the Center.

From now on, it’s against the law to put electronic stuff in your garbage.
Anything with a plug or battery should be recycled.
Before you throw away old electronic equipment, here’s important news: Items like
computers, radios, TVs, and telephones will
not be accepted in your curbside trash or
recycling containers. The State passed a
new law to keep these materials out of
local landfills. By recycling them, we can
reuse their valuable materials and protect
the environment. Bring your electronics to
