Executive Summary
The Archives is celebrating 41 years’ existence. We gratefully acknowledge our
many supporters. In 1974 Lu Rees, then President of The Children’s Book Council
of Australia (CBCA) ACT Branch had a vision for a national collection, and so the
Archives began. The Branch has continued to support the Archives each year. The
National body of the CBCA funded part-time staff for 19 years, which enabled
us to develop the collection. The National CBCA is now pursuing other ventures,
so we wish them well and thank them for their past support. The University of
Canberra has hosted the Archives since 1980 and provided in kind support. This
support has enabled the Archives to pursue its vision to be the national centre for
Australian children’s literature. We especially wish to express our deep gratitude to
our invaluable, highly skilled volunteers. They have been instrumental in achieving
our goals. These thirty-nine volunteers donated 4,599 hours, the equivalent of 657
days and 2.6 full-time time staff.
Australia-wide support continues from the children’s book industry. We added
2,124 books, the largest number in our history with 199 of these in 20 different
languages. Donors included 34 publishers and their imprints, 23 authors and
illustrators and 29 individuals and organisations. Sixty-three individuals donated
funds. The Archives’ ran a successful fundraising campaign this year to create a
guide to the Omnibus Books Publisher Archive with 54 individuals contributing
$9,500 to this campaign.
Many of the fundraising events this year were ably organised and led by Trish Milne.
These simultaneously promoted and publicised the Archives and reached both
familiar and new audiences. Longstanding volunteers, Rose Howes, Lynn Fletcher
and Heike Elvers, pursued many important initiatives this year which documented
collections, increased access and strengthened relationships. Max Brown continued
to document and rehouse the Archives’ artwork collection, and these documents
are then available on our website. Pat Dickson worked with individuals across
Australia to collect newspaper and magazine clippings thus enhancing our unique
research files on 446 authors, illustrators, publishers and critics.
One of the Archives’ major achievements extended over two financial years
between May 2014 and August 2015. We worked with Ann James and Ann

Haddon from Books Illustrated (Melbourne) who curated, along with Nicky Lo
Bianco, the exhibition of Bob Graham’s creative endeavours over 30 years. A Bird
in the Hand! Bob Graham: A Retrospective, exhibited at the Canberra Museum &
Gallery, attracted over 12,000 people. We are continuing to work with Books
Illustrated as we apply to Australia Council for funds to tour this popular exhibition
to remote and regional locations around Australia.
The Archives also expanded its social presence through our e-newsletter, produced
by Lynn Fletcher; Facebook, produced by Jane Carstens; and Twitter, produced
by Belle Alderman. The first issue of our e-newsletter came out on 11 July 2014. It
began with 348 recipients and concluded the year with double that number. Each
of our social media endeavours makes links with our website as appropriate, thus
increasing traffic, countries visiting and pages accessed. Our engagement strategy
has increased our followers, encouraged purchases through our online portal for
merchandise, promoted our fundraising events and enabled us to publicise a range
of reports, surveys, event flyers and competitions.
We strengthened our research resources with Cultural Gifts donations from Bob
Graham, Warwick Reeder, Helen Maxwell, Dianne Bates and Bill Condon. Several
of these are still in process. Many of these records are available on the Archives’
website and also on Trove, the National Library of Australia’s digital collective
which provides access to Australia’s major collections. The Archives also enhanced
its research presence through the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), a
recent and continuing project undertaken by universities across Australia. This
is a resource discovery service which documents and provides access to research
material in Australian universities.
Our endeavours continue to increase demand for our resources and services.
The Archives served 658 clients over the year providing 419 hours of specialised
service. This was an increase of 56 hours over last year. Our year ended with a
significant achievement: the signing of a new Agreement between the University
and the Archives. This special celebratory event featured an appearance by Bob
Graham, who read his book Silver Buttons to an eager group of pre-schoolers from
the Wiradjuri Childcare Centre. The love of story begins with the creator and such
events as these instil that same love of story in future generations.

Lu Rees Archives Strategic Plan
Since 2000, the Lu Rees Archives (LRA) Annual Reports have measured
performance against an annual Action Plan. These are derived from the Archives’
current Strategic Plan.
The vision, aim, mission and objectives from the Strategic Plan 2011-2015 provide
the broader perspective against which the Archives has measured its achievements.
These are outlined below and are reported upon in this Annual Report.
Vision
The vision of the Lu Rees Archives is to collect, collate and record the national
development of Australian children’s literature and, in so doing, to be the nation’s
most comprehensive children’s literature archive in the country.
Aim
We aim to provide resources for the study and research of Australian children’s
authors and illustrators, including both the literature and the historical and cultural
context in which it was created.
Mission
We strive to enhance the appreciation of Australian children’s literature by
collecting, preserving and making available wide-ranging resources.

achievements over this reporting year from 1 July 2014 - 30 June 2015.

Completed stock take and rearrangement of 26,000 book collection for easier access.
Number of visits to LRA website was 6,766, with 27,965 page views; 47.9% were
new visitors & 52.1% were returning visitors. Among top 10 pages accessed were the
homepage, children’s literature websites, merchandise – Pixie O’Harris glassware, survey
and wish lists. Most frequent visitors came from Australia, US, Jamaica, India, UK,
Philippines, China, Indonesia, Canada and NZ, in that order.
Trained 2 LRA volunteers

Jackie French agreed to be LRA Ambassador for 2016-2017.
Speakers presented aspects of Pixie O’Harris’ life and work: Max Brown on preservation
of her artwork; Lynn Fletcher on Pixie’s artistic legacy; Frances Miley on childhood
memories of Pixie; and Rowena Evans, granddaughter, on family memories. Included a
small exhibition of original Pixie O’Harris’ artwork at ALIA House, Deakin, 17 September
2014.
Provided work experience for student intern
Australian National University postgraduate student in Museum & Collections course
became LRA intern over 5 months; created guide to an author’s papers; completed
documentation of rare books collection; and engaged in other professional tasks.

showcased LRA specialist collections of Emily Rodda and Aboriginal baby board books
across the University campus.

Conclusion
The Lu Rees Archives has actively pursued wider recognition through several mediums.
This strategy has resulted in increased donations, successful funding campaigns, larger
audiences for events and exhibitions, growing website traffic and additional followers
interested in the Archives. The groundwork is laid for next year’s drive to reach an even
wider audience and to work together in developing the Lu Rees Archives as Australia’s
national collection of Australian children’s literature.
