Banishing Brown Spots
New IPL Technology
We have been successfully treating patients
with IPL in our practice for over 4 years and
have had some great testimonials on this
universal procedure. We believe in ongoing
education to learn about the current, safest,
most effective treatments available. After
researching many types of light sources, we
are happy to be the first practice in the
Triangle area with the most advanced
technology in IPL today. The new Ellipse Flex
I2PL is faster, treats multiple skin conditions,
and is more effective in treating resistant
areas than traditional IPL machines. Come
find out what you’re missing!
IPL- Intense Pulsed Light
IPL Photo-rejuvenation therapy is a light
based source that uses energy to treat sundamaged skin with minimal or no “downtime.” Although it is not a laser IPL can treat
many of the same conditions that lasers do,
without wounding the skin. IPL is most
recommended for sun-damaged skin and is
widely recognized for its ability to improve
the following skin issues: brown spots,
broken blood vessels, and uneven skin tone.
The beauty of this procedure is that we can
safely treat the face, neck, chest, or any
other body part that has suffered sundamage
How it works
IPL treatments work to eliminate brown
spots by “shocking” the cells into releasing
their pigment. The light penetrates deep
into the skin, disrupting the collagen, which
starts to regenerate by bundling together
more densely. Treatments usually take about
a half an hour, depending on the area being
treated. Patients have described the
sensation as a “rubber band snap”, followed
by a hot sensation akin to the feeling of
sunburn. Persons with significant freckling
and/or hyper- pigmentation will notice that
treated skin initially darkens. The darkening of
these brown spots only lasts for a few days
before sloughing off and fading into a lighter
color than before treatment.
are considering IPL or any other procedure,
we recommend scheduling a consultation
with one of our physicians to find out what
your options are.
Who benefits from IPL?
A good skin care regimen is important to
maximizing the benefits of IPL.
Preparing the skin with products
containing AHA’s (alphahydroxy acids), retinoids, and
products containing
hydroquinone (a bleaching
agent that reduces melanin
production), will enhance
and maintain your
results. A physical
sunblock is a must when
treating any patient with
skin discoloration, as sun
and heat can exacerbate
dark spots and patches.
The best candidates for IPL treatment are
patients with lighter skin tones who desire
improvement from such imperfections as
uneven skin, dull complexion, and
discoloration. Darker skin tones and/or tanned
skin are not recommended for IPL. This
treatment is the perfect “starting point” for
those who wish to dramatically improve the
appearance and quality of their skin, but are
not ready for major surgery. On the other
hand, IPL treatment can be used in
conjunction with and significantly enhance
many surgical procedures. IPL can be the
perfect non-invasive procedure used alone or
in combination with other therapies, resulting
in a healthy, more youthful appearance. If you

Superior Sun
Protection is
Here At Last!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has finally approved the
revolutionary sunscreen Anthelios for the
U.S. consumer. Anthelios, which has been
produced in France by cosmetics company
L’Oreal, offers a superior formulation that
protects from both UVA light, associated
with pre-mature aging, and UVB light,
responsible for actual burning. The active
ingredients in Anthelios have been widely
used by dermatologists throughout Europe
and Canada to protect against skin cancer
and aging for more than a decade now.
With so many sunscreens already available,
what sets this product apart is its innovative
use of Mexoryl SX, a unique ingredient that
prevents UVA absorption better than any
other. Most sunscreens sold in the United
States only block UVB rays, which cause
sunburn and some types of skin damage.
Anthelios covers UVB, but also offers
protection from harmful UVA rays.
"Ultraviolet-A light is most damaging to your
skin”, says Dr. Sue Ellen Cox, Medical Director
of Aesthetic Solutions. She explains that
“UVA has a longer wavelength, so it can
penetrate deeper into the skin, and instead of
attacking the upper layers of the skin it
attacks the layers that give your skin its tone,
its elasticity. You age much faster getting
brown spots and wrinkles, all the things
associated with aging”. Dr. Cox stresses the
importance of using a sunscreen that
prevents both UVA and UVB absorption.
Although Mexoryl SX has been spotlighted
in Anthelios, the new product will also
contain two other active ingredients,
octocrylene and avobenzone, to ensure
broad spectrum protection and makes
Anthelios SX more powerful than anything
else on the market today.
We at Aesthetic Solutions have been
anxiously awaiting the approval of Anthelios
and are excited to be able to add this superior
product to the future of skincare that
includes regular skin cancer screenings for
awareness of sun damage that may have
already been incurred. Check our website for
updates about this exciting new sunscreen.

October-Breast Cancer
Awareness Month
Consider experience
when contemplating
In May 2006, Dr. Cox and Dr. Finn donated all of their cosmetic consultation
fees to The Melanoma Education Foundation in honor of Melanoma
Awareness Month. For all of you patients who came in for a cosmetic
consultation last May--you should be proud! You helped raise $1680.00 in
donations for the Melanoma Education Foundation!
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October 2006, Dr. Cox and Dr. Finn will again
be donating all cosmetic consultation fees, this time to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation. For more than 20 years the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been
a global leader in the fight against breast cancer by way of community based outreach
programs and its support of new innovative research. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation is one of the nation’s largest private funding sources for breast health and
breast cancer. Since 1982 the foundation has awarded more than 1,000 dollars in breast
cancer research grants totaling over $180 million. The Komen Foundation is the only source
of funding for cutting-edge breast cancer research, which has led to great discoveries in the
quest to find a cure for and eventually prevent this disease. It’s important for women of
every age group to remember the importance of getting tested regularly for breast cancer,
since a screening can detect a problem early while it’s most treatable.

dermatologist, Dr. Sue Ellen Cox, and board
certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Charlie Finn,
are Platinum Plus Level BOTOX® Cosmetic
Providers. This award indicates that our
physicians have the most
experience injecting BOTOX®
Cosmetic in all of North
Carolina and are among the
nation’s top 2 percent of

as you may find at other offices). Our policy
ensures that all of our patients receive the
highest level of expertise.
Dr. Finn and Dr. Cox are highly skilled injectors
and can provide advanced BOTOX® Cosmetic
injection techniques such as the "Botox
Browlift", BOTOX® Cosmetic for the lower face,
neck creases and muscular chords. BOTOX®
Cosmetic can also be combined with injectible
fillers, such as Restylane, for a more enhanced
effect and prolonged longevity.
Dr. Finn and Dr. Cox have participated in a
number of studies confirming the safety and
efficacy of Botox as well as studies measuring
patient satisfaction. They believe in the “Magic
of Botox” and continue to contribute to the
medical documentation proving Botox to be a
safe rejuvenating treatment for anti-aging.
Now the Botox® Benefits

Allergan, the makers of Botox® Cosmetic, have
always wanted to reward their consumers. In
the past, they’ve tried sweepstakes and prizes,
but now the company has an all new approach.
The new system will be more of a continuing
privileged membership than a one-shot chance
to win. After your next Botox® treatment you’ll
receive a Botox® Cosmetic Gift Card good for

bringing the card, and they’ll keep crediting the

Not everyone has the same amount of sundamage, so more or less treatments may be
required to obtain the desired results. However,
improvement in overall skin irregularities can
be seen after the very first treatment.
Combining IPL with
other procedures
IPL can be combined with almost any other
type of treatment, addressing each individual’s
specific needs. Non-invasive chemical peels,
Microdermabrasion, and Vibraderm are helpful
to exfoliate build-up from dead skin cells. IPL is
highly recommended prior to surgical
procedures in order to rejuvenate the skin and
promote healthy healing. Since IPL can
minimize long-term redness, it can also be
helpful after a procedure, such as a TCAMedium Depth Peel or C02 Laser resurfacing.
The latest “rave” in the treatment of sundamage is PDT (photo dynamic therapy). This
procedure combines ALA, aminolevulonic acid,
a photosensitizing agent, which is applied to
the skin an hour prior to IPL treatment. This
dynamic duo has proven to dramatically
improve fine lines, texture, pore size, acne, oil
production, and last but not least, precancerous lesions known as AKs (actinic
keratoses). Combining ALA and IPL can reduce
the number of regular IPL treatments needed
by almost half, but expect a few days of
additional downtime and avoid even indirect
sunlight for at least 48 hours.
Another highly successful combination for
addressing facial aging is IPL and Botox®. A
study published in the March 2004 medical
journal, Dermatologic Surgery, states
remarkable improvement for
several different aging
components such as facial veins,
brown spots, skin texture, and
pore size was achieved when
combining these treatments
compared to results of IPL alone.
What is especially impressive
about this powerful combination
is that you can treat many of
your facial aging issues in a
“lunch-time procedure”,
allowing you to return to your
normal activities with no recovery period.
