President’s Report
We are already well in to 2007 and spring is just around the corner. We have celebrated our annual
Christmas party with a visit from Santa and Schmutzli. The afternoon started with Trudy Feller reciting a
mundart versli especially for Santa, Schmutzli and our children as well as for the adults. Thank you Trudy,
your presentation gave our children a boost to come forward and say something to Santa, and what fun we
all had with Santa and Schmutzli. Much laughter could be heard! Our children entertained Santa and us with
singing, reciting a French poem and playing the violin. Of course, Santa and Schmutzli presented all our
children with a wonderful goody bag. Fred Affolter sang Stille Nacht and we all joined him in this song as
well. The Chrittibaenzli and cookies were also very much appreciated. A big thank you to everyone who
brought goodies. Thanks also to all the children who brought their artwork to display – we hope that they all
enjoyed receiving their advents calendars. After Santa and Schmutzli said their goodbyes and wishing us all
a Merry Christmas and of course, promising to return to us next year, our fondue plausch started with all of
us being busy at the stoves. Soon all was quiet and one could hear “en guete und proscht”! Thank you to
all in attendance and especially those who helped with the set-up and clean-up of the Hall. See you again
next year!
Our Annual Bowling Tournament will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the Falcon Lanes in Kamloops,
again after the tournament we all meet for lunch at the Desert Gardens, the lunch and desserts are
organized by Elisabeth and Erwin Nyfeler. Following the lunch, the results and prizes will be handed out.
Good shoot to all.
The Annual Spring Dance will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the Schubert Centre in Vernon. The
Vernon Blaskapelle under the direction of John Doerwaldt will entertain us and other musicians will perform
as well.
The formal invitation to our Annual General Meeting and Agenda is published on page 3. I would like to
formally invite all the members to our Annual General Meeting to be held on Sunday, April 15, 2007. The
meeting will start at 1.00 pm; the location is the Odd Fellow Hall in Armstrong. Rico Ronzani and Heidi
Gadmer have decided to resign after many years of dedicated work to the club. The Executive thanks Rico
and Heidi for their work that they have contributed to the club. Nominations to serve on the board are
accepted by our secretary Karen Cleland. I look forward to seeing many members at the Annual General
Meeting.
The 2007 Membership fees are due now. Please mail your cheque to our membership chairperson: Elisabeth
Reymond at 13616 Ponderosa Way, Coldstream, B.C. V1B 1A4. Please be reminded that only paid-up

Free trade: Japan and Switzerland?!
TOKYO — Geographical proximity, sizable trade and investment volume, and resource wealth are
Japan’s key criteria for selecting potential partners for free-trade agreements (FTAs). Switzerland
has become a rare exception.
During a telephone meeting last Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Swiss
President Micheline Calmy-Rey agreed to launch negotiations soon on concluding an FTA, which
would eliminate import tariffs on almost all goods. The two countries aim to conclude the accord
by the end of the year.
If realized, this would be Japan’s first such agreement with a European country, and as Tokyo has
no plans to pursue agreements with other European countries, including such trading
powerhouses as Germany or France, the question then naturally arises: Why Switzerland? One
could respond: Why not?
The trading relationship is fairly small. Combined trade totals only a little more than US $7 billion
annually, although Japan is Switzerland’s third-largest trading partner and it’s largest in Asia.
Generally, the goods are high-value products. There are relatively few major trade disagreements
between them, so it may be fairly easy to negotiate.
But more important, Switzerland fits neatly into Japan’s overall strategy to use FTA to enhance its
trading position in East Asia, especially vis-a-vis China, and is seen as a potential ally at the Doha
Round of international trade talks under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Since Tokyo and Bern tend to see eye-to-eye on agricultural protectionism, concluding a freetrade agreement with the Swiss can be seen as a kind of warm-up for the next round of
international trade negotiations. At the same time, anticipated agreements on intellectual-property
protection and investments can provide a template for further regionwide negotiations.

Franzi Rieder ~ Prime Travel
I spent my first 27 years in Switzerland-growing up in Adelboden, skiing, professionally skating
and working as a figure skating coach.
I started traveling in 1981 and got hooked on BC. I moved to Vancouver in 1991 and started my
Business as a Travel agent. I have been a Swiss Specialist since 1995.
I got involved with the Swiss Society of Vancouver through Lilly Senn, and through the club I
got to know a lot of Swiss people. I have enjoyed staying in touch with Swiss traditions.
I have been working for the last 10 years at Prime Travel, taking care of
mostly Swiss clientele, helping plan their trips to Switzerland and Europe. I also take care of
package bookings to hot destinations as well as cruises and train travel. In addition I book
passes, car rentals, hotels and adventure travel. That pretty much covers all the bases.
I am enjoying my work, everyday is different.
If you have any travel needs which I could assist you with I would be happy to help.
Please see my ad on page 6 for up to date information on summer flights to Switzerland.
Thank You!
The Christmas party was a success due to our volunteers, bakers, Santa, Schmutzli,
goody bag donations from Trudy Feller and the sewing of the good bags by Ursi
Schnyder! Great team work for a great event

Christmas Party Report
This year's Christmas party was a houseful-we kept putting more chairs and tables out as
people arrived until eventually we were out of room! It was great to see so many members
traveled the miles to attend. Santa did a fantastic job-the kids loved him and he brought a
healthy dose of humor along for the adults. Schmutzli was also a hit once the kids realized
he would be the one handing out the goody bags!
As we have in the past, we enjoyed many wonderful cakes and cookies-A big thank you to
everyone who brought goodies. Thanks to all of the children who brought their artwork to
display-we hope that they all enjoyed receiving their advent calendars.
Thank You as well to Fred Affolter who entertained us with his singing and Trudy Feller for
reciting the poem! You both really helped to bring the Christmas spirit to life.

Humorscope
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Relationships are a lot like tables. One leg is love, one is trust, one is shared pleasures, and one is shared dreams. Lasting
relationships need all four legs for balance, to hold up the burden of your troubles. In your case, though, you'll never get
rid of that irritating wobble.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Today you will have the eerie sensation that either you are going crazy or you are being watched by something
indescribably evil. Luckily for you, you're in fine shape, mentally.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Good day to go out and play in the mud. Or at least, find some way of making squishy sounds.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
You will have a grilled cheese sandwich today, and a bowl of tomato soup. When nobody is looking you will secretly
dunk your sandwich. You never tire of the wild life, do you?
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Today you will join the political action group "Whiners For Peace", and will call up your senator's office and whine at
them. Don't forget to sign up for the big "Pout Out" next month!
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Today you'll suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, and believe me, that'll hurt.
Libra (September 22 - October 22)
Excellent day to make strange mouth noises, particularly in a crowded elevator.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
Today you will see a free floating full torso vaporous apparition! It'll turn out that your glasses are smudged.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
In a daring intellectual coup, you will translate a collection of Zen koans from Chinese directly into Jive, in an attempt to
combine the best elements of philosophical thought and emotion. You will title the collection "Yo Mama By The River."
Capricorn (December 22 - January 20)
You will be buffeted by hordes of people, who will all simultaneously show up in your office "just to chat." Eventually,
you will make your escape by locking yourself in the bathroom.
Aquarius (January 21 - February 18)
You will discover that you can raise one eyebrow by itself, but not the other. This will aggravate you, and you'll spend
the majority of the day in front of the bathroom mirror, trying to correct the situation.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
You will be visited by missionaries today, and will finally have an excellent opportunity to slip into your demon costume
before opening the door.
