The retail sector will face a number of challenges
throughout 2015−2016. In particular, brands are in high
competition to attract customers and secure prime retail
space in the face of rising rent.
Legco Member, Michael Tien, also founder of Hong
Kong brand G2000, recently shared his views with
Retail Asia Expo on how to win the retail war. “E-commerce
sites like Taobao and Amazon are changing the face of
retail, and new technology trends sound promising, but the
task of extracting real value for an exciting customer
experience is not easy for retailers. Customers have higher
expectations, and in order to connect with them, retailers
need to offer both physical and emotional benefits”.

Blending the online and offline worlds is a key feature of the future
retail, with the rise of online-to-offline (O2O) commerce, the application
of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and the trend towards more
immersive in-store shopping experiences through digitization.
At the same time, the scale of opportunity for retailers in the region could not
be higher. Retail sales in large cities in China have seen a historical 3-year
average annual growth of between 15-17%. By 2020, 130 million new people
will be living in these cities, stimulating further demand for retailers.
In Hong Kong, 38% of customers have said they plan to increase
luxury spending in 2015. South East Asia’s robust economic growth
has seen the sub region’s cities like Singapore become highly sought
out locations for retailers. Capitialising on these opportunities means
embracing innovation and change across the entire retail journey.

What are the exciting design elements in the retail
market in 2015?
An artistic approach will be dominating this year, with handcrafted, artsy
decoratives in papier-mâché, shredded caves, paint-spatter effects and
patchwork paper. Versatility and adaptability will continue as key for
fixtures. A linear look will run throughout, with pole systems, strip lights,
repeated panels and laser-cut geometric patterns.
How can retail store design nowadays help retailers in
advertising as compared with traditional promotion methods?
Consumers are increasingly looking for inspiration in their shopping
trips, as e-commerce gets cheaper and more convenient. The store has
to take up a new role in the customer journey, the shop now more than
ever has to represent a brand’s ethos and tell the brand’s story. The
store design, VM, shop windows have to come together in a cohesive
story that gives consumer a reason to step out from behind their
computers and experience the store.
