Summer Festival brochure for the young
the young company at Stoneham Theatre has three Summer
programs, structured by grade level. Check the guide below for
where to find information about the right program for you!
H ELLO H U MA N S,
We’re so excited to tell you everything about Summer Festival 2015! This
brochure will be a helpful resource, giving you information about classes,
timing, prices, and most importantly, the vision for the summer!
The Summer Festival combines the rigorous rehearsal process of the Winter
Festival and Spring Shakespeare with the learning of the Fall and Spring Classes
+ Voice Lessons. Actors will be fully engaged and delightfully challenged as
they learn performance, dance, and music in this multi-disciplinary setting.
Every individual is pushed to explore new techniques and delve further into
the craft of acting by engaging the mind, heart, and body.

Literature comes to life this summer with Disney's My Son Pinocchio, Jr.,
Godspell, and Rough Magic. Competition gets fierce with Damn Yankees and
a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost, and it doesn't
get bigger than Titanic. Younger students in the overture program will be
transported to a pirate ship, the circus, and ancient Egypt! Performers of
all ages will be moved as they learn various forms of dance and engage
in physical work. Participants will experiment with design and backstage
elements, enabling them to walk away well-versed in theatre production.
Whether you’ve been doing theatre your entire life or this will be your first time
on a stage, the young company Summer Festival 2015 has something for you.
We hope to see you this summer!

WEEK 1: July 6 - 10, 2015
FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 1 – 3
PROGRAM DATES: JULY 6 - AUGUST 14, 2015
Limited to 20 students in each week, our overture program introduces our youngest
actors to musical theatre performance in a fun, open, and supportive atmosphere. We
consider acting, music, dance, and design different ways to tell a story to our audience,
each equally important to develop! Each week explores a particular theme through acting,
dance, songs, and theatre crafts. Students spend the day playing theatre games, learning
choreography, developing group and solo singing skills, engaging in stage crafts, and
ultimately rehearsing a short original piece with music and dance. The week culminates in
sharing of that piece for friends and family on Stoneham Theatre’s stage.

a sliding discount; the more weeks you
choose, the more you save per week.
Students enrolling in one or two weeks
must pay in full at time of registration.
Students enrolling in three through
six weeks may apply to pay in three
installments: one at registration, one on

FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES:
Thursday, August 6 - Sunday, August 9, 2015
Limited to 33 students, our act 1 program focuses on key skills needed as an actor:
building a strong and supportive ensemble, creating larger-than-life physical and vocal
characters, and developing confidence by committing to our performances and each
other. Strengthening music ability is central, especially rhythm and pitch; all students
should be able to read music by the end of the program. We also introduce students to
the design process through constructing props for their productions.
Limited to 50 students, our act 2 program builds on the skills developed in act 1 while
widening our focus. Actors take on multiple perspectives; not only by tackling challenging
characters, but also by analyzing scenes and songs to uncover the performance clues
playwrights and composers give us. Dance is more challenging, incorporating both
musical theatre and contemporary dance. Actors participate in the design process
through collaboration with costume designers.
All actors are cast in one of two musicals: approximately 30 students will be cast in Disney’s
My Son Pinocchio, Jr., and approximately 3 students will join act 2 actors in Godspell.
All actors are cast in one of two musicals: approximately 22 act 2 actors will be cast in
Godspell and approximately 28 in Damn Yankees.

Limited to 55 students, our act 3 program continues the explorations of our younger
programs with increased rigor. As actors, we explore a diverse array of professional
training methods. Music theory is added to the curriculum for all. Diversity is also a
hallmark of our movement training, as we expand beyond musical theatre dance into
myriad styles. All our work has big questions in mind: what does it mean to be an actor?
An artist? A person? How can theatre make us better at all three?
Our three productions expand in scope to include both a challenging play and an edgy
off-beat musical, in addition to a Broadway favorite. All actors are cast in one of these
shows. Approximately 24 actors will be cast in the musical Titanic. Approximately 17
actors will be cast in the musical Love's Labour’s Lost. Approximately 14 actors will be
cast in the play Rough Magic.

ACT 1, ACT 2, & ACT 3 PROGRAM
STRUCTURE: THE FIF TH WEEK
Tech Week
ACT 1, ACT 2, & ACT 3 PROGRAM
STRUCTURE: THE FIRST 4 WEEKS
During the first four weeks, the program runs Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 2:30pm.
Actors spend roughly two-thirds of their day in show rehearsals and the remaining onethird in classes in acting, music, dance, and stagecraft.
Casting
Rehearsals
For acts 1, 2, and 3, we use the first
two days of the program for the
casting process. More information
about the audition process and
how to prepare is available via
the link to the online participation
packet sent to each actor upon
enrollment. In casting, we combine
the actor preferences with our
audition
observations,
then
match them with the technical
requirements of each role and
learning goals for each actor. At
the end of the process, we place
students in whichever production
and role best suits the artistic and
educational needs of both the
program and the student. Roles
will not be double-cast.
In rehearsals, actors work with a team that
usually includes a director, music director,
choreographer and stage manager. Each
production team is composed of professional
theatre artists or current university students
majoring in theatre. In some cases, they are also
graduates of our program!
16
16
Classes
In addition to rehearsals, students take two daily
classes in various theatre disciplines during the
first four weeks. We divide that into two-week
sessions so each student takes a total of four
classes. For all actors, that includes one acting
class and one music class. All act 1 and act 2
students will also take a dance class. At the end
of each session, some classes share what they’ve
been working on with family, friends, and fellow
actors.
To help place students in classes, each actor
completes a questionnaire that assesses
previous experience and training as part of the
online participation packet; we also use the
dance audition for class placement. In addition
to the essentials, previous classes have included
everything from stage combat to ballroom
dance, and Suzuki to stage makeup!
Festival
Performances
Costumes, lights, and additional musicians
are added during the fifth and final week,
known as “tech week,” when the programs
move to Stoneham Theatre. Rehearsals this
week are held both on stage and in our large
rehearsal room.
All six productions culminate in
fully realized public performances
on Stoneham Theatre’s stage. Each
production has three performances
over the course of Thursday
through Sunday of the final week.
During tech week, the schedule changes to
accommodate multiple tech processes on
one stage. The act 1 and act 2 programs have
additional rehearsals on Saturday, August 1 and
Sunday, August 2. Tech week schedules for
Disney’s My Son Pinocchio, Jr., Godspell, Love's
Labour’s Lost, and Rough Magic change to
afternoons and evenings. Tech week schedules
for Damn Yankees and Titanic remain mostly
unchanged. A more specific tech calendar is
included in the online participation packet.
