Sterling GSRP Preschool Updates...
The preschoolers celebrated the Halloween holiday by wearing
orange. They played pin the nose on the pumpkin and musical shapes.
During the month of October the children did a lot of pumpkin activities
such pounding pegs into pumpkins, taping the letter p on pumpkins,
floating pumpkins in water, and gutting and carving pumpkins.
Preschoolers at the Sterling GSRP Preschool have had a very busy
fall. The Sterling Fire Fighters visited the school and they brought their
smoke house and fire trucks. They taught the children how to stay safe
in case of a fire by learning how to get out and stay out of a burning
building and how to stop, drop and roll if their clothes are on fire.
The EMTs also came to the school and let the children go inside their
ambulance. They showed the children the equipment they use to help
people who are sick or hurt.
Deputy Vallad also stopped by the preschool classroom and talked to
the children about Halloween safety.
In November the Sterling GSRP Preschool class held a Family Feast
with lots of delicious food provided by the preschool and the preschool
families. The children displayed some of their fall art they made and
sang a few songs for their families. It was wonderful celebration of the
Thanksgiving season and families.
The children went on their first field trip to LeCroniers’s Baby Acres.
The children fed and held some baby goats, sheep, chicks, and calves
and went on a hayride. Each preschooler also brought home a pumpkin, it was a great day!

Standish GSRP Preschool Updates...
During October and November, the
preschool kids at Standish Elementary were busy getting in the spirit for
Fall! They made applesauce, pounded away at a couple of unfortunate
pumpkins and enjoyed some pumpkin
pie playdough!
Halloween was the next big adventure for the preschoolers at
Standish Elementary. There were several highlights for the day, including a costume party with games of Pin-the-Mouth-on-the-Skeleton
and Ghost Bowling with pumpkins. And our Halloween party couldn’t
be complete without a little m&m graphing! Then it was off to Lecronier’s Baby Acres, where we picked out our very own pumpkins and
tried to stay warm with all of the baby animals there.
We also had a few visitors for our look in to Emergency Safety. Thank
you to the Standish Fire Department and EMS team for coming out and
getting the kids familiar with your equipment and teaching them proper
safety measures.
We finished our Fall celebrations with our Family Feast. The families in our GSRP program shared a Potluck meal together. The stars
of the show were the preschool performers and their thankfulness for
NOT being poor Mr. Turkey this season.
Sterling Elementary News.....
“Sounds” like Mrs. Gibson’s 3rd grade has been Busy!
Mrs. Gibson’s 3rd grade has had a busy December! They participated in the annual Holiday Music Program with their new Music Instructor, Mrs. Smith, made
over 1000 cookies for their families in 2 hours with the help of several AMAZING volunteers, studied multiplication facts (will continue after the break!) using
memory games, electronics and timed tests, and have learned a ton about how
sound is made! Students made musical instruments to study the vibrations that
caused the sounds each instrument makes including the high and low levels of
their frequency and pitch.
Dore’s Mobil Supports Our Students
Sterling Elementary would like to thank Dore’s Mobil for their continued support to our students at Sterling Elementary School. The
generous donation from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance, that was
presented to Sterling Elementary by Amy Sikoriski from Dore’s Store in
Alger, will enhance the learning environment of our students.
The $500.00 grant from ExxonMobil Educational Alliance will be used
to supplement the materials available to our students enhancing their
educational experience. We plan to use the money to fund the purchase of reading materials.

A big thank you to everyone that participated in our fall fundraiser.
The money that we earn from the fundraiser goes towards class
fieldtrips, Christmas presents for the classrooms, monthly popcorn
days, Acting Up Theatre, Fifth grade send-off, March is Reading
Month rewards, Scholastic News and MANY, MANY other activities financed by the PTK. Thank you so much for your continued support.
Sincerely,
The Standish Elementary PTK
Second graders in Mrs. Williams’ and Mrs. Kolka’s classes promoted a more caring environment. After reading the monthly
school wide book, Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson and
illustrated by E.B. Lewis, the second graders wanted to create a
ripple effect of kindness by holding a short food drive for families that were in need of extra help for the Christmas season.
Two local families received a $20 gift card to Family Fare and
three boxes of food and other supplies. The outpouring of items
brought in by students was greatly appreciated. A thank you
goes out to all the families for their generosity.

STANDISH-STERLING CELEBRATES OUR SCHOOL BOARD LEADERS THIS JANUARY
“School Boards Lead”
January is School Board Recognition Month and Standish-Sterling is joining 541 local and
56 intermediate school districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for
their untiring dedication to public education.
“Serving on a school board has been described as the ‘toughest volunteer job in America.’
Yet Michigan’s public school board members dedicate countless personal hours to attending meetings, school functions, and hours of preparation for the decisions they make,” said
Darren Kroczaleski, Superintendent. “On top of that, many pursue their own professional
development to stay on top of the ever-changing education landscape. Collectively, school
board members in Michigan have spent about 7,000 hours attending training and professional development. They’re dedicated individuals who are committed to the continuing success of our schools and students.”
It’s an exciting and challenging time in public education. School board members in
Standish-Sterling develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of
our education system. They bear responsibility and oversight for an annual budget of about
$15 million, 1,583 students, 175 employees and 4 school buildings.
“We proudly join educators and community members in saluting these education advocates
as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district
funding and school facilities,” Kroczaleski said. “They preserve the core of our democracy—
public education.”
