WISE
If you’re guided primarily by price...
try these
The value of a wine isn’t necessarily found in the sticker
price but in how the quality of that particular wine stacks
up against all wines within its category, at all price points.
What a wine is made from, where it’s from, who made it,
and how well-crafted it is are all critical elements in the
value equation. View these factors in combination and
you’ll always be able to find wines that exceed expectations, at all price points.

SCORE
SETTLER
If you choose wines based on scores
and accolades... try these
A great score or a medal win can be enormously helpful in
identifying a wine that should deliver a true expression of
a varietal or region at a particular price point – and when an
accolade is associated with a favourable price tag, your
choice is even easier. It’s important to learn which critics’
tastes align most closely with your own so that you can
calibrate their scores to your preferences and really zero
in on which wines are perfect for you.

THE PROOF
IS IN THE
PEDIGREE
If a wine’s provenance is your starting
point... try these
Every wine region and each varietal has a particular
strength, for example, the classic flavours that have made
them benchmarks. When you purchase a wine such
as an Ontario Riesling, a California Cab, a New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc or a Barolo from Piedmont, you’re buying
a tradition of excellence, and as you deepen your understanding you’re sure to uncover true treasures.

Along with thinking about the price, the region and the
grape, the reputation of the producer or winemaker can

– these are people and families whose reputation
depends upon your satisfaction. Their name is their
guarantee of quality.

or region that you’re unfamiliar with at an accessible
price. Where this introduction will take you is up to you,
but we’re certain you’ll love the journey.

LOCAL
TALENT
Different parts of the world celebrate the New Year’s
Eve countdown at different times, as the big moment
hits time zones around the globe in turn. Europe
and the UK, for instance, are ahead of the curve (of
the Earth) and so ring in the new year several hours
before we do here. Of course, the flipside is true
when it comes to celebrating Ontario wines: it takes
time for news of the local wines we love to reach
the ears (and palates) of the world – but when it does,
there is much to be celebrated. More and more
international wine critics are synchronizing their
watches, so to speak, and expressing their fondness
for the wines grown here in Ontario.
Jancis Robinson, MW, has a long history with Ontario
wines. In fact, the first professional wine tasting
she ever attended was of Ontario wines in early 1976.
Last May, she and her UK-based colleagues had
an opportunity for a modern taste of Ontario at a
special event at Canada House in London, England.
Jancis, who was pleasantly surprised by the quality
of Ontario wines at a similar event in 2011, said this
most recent tasting proves the wines are getting even
better. Author and wine critic Jamie Goode evidently
agreed, describing the event as “a great success.
Lots of energy and enthusiasm, great people, and
some lovely wines.” It’s no wonder each of the seven
Ontario wines he reviewed from that tasting scored
between 92 and 94 points!
Italian-based wine critic and Decanter columnist
Ian D’Agata extolled the virtues of Ontario wine even
more recently. “The quality of Ontario’s wines is
the result of three factors: the presence of the lake,
topography and soil composition,” he said in the
September 2015 issue of Decanter. “Ontario’s cooler
Ontario’s cooler average temperatures and uniquely
complex geology are heaven for cool-climate varieties.
– IAN D’AGATA, DECANTER
average temperatures and uniquely complex geology
are heaven for cool-climate varieties.”
Our cool, lake-moderated climate means Ontario
wines retain brilliant natural acidity, making them
mouth-watering and food-friendly. It also allows fruit
to ripen more slowly, retaining greater elegance and
nuance, and more eloquently expressing the character
of the vineyard. As D’Agata explains, “Ontario’s climate
doesn’t allow the grapes to reach huge ripeness
levels. Winemakers aim for stylistic refinement.”
That stylistic refinement is certainly evident in
each of the wines featured here, from the vibrant
unoaked Chardonnay to the savoury Cab Franc
to the Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet/Merlot blend.

ROBERT BURNS ARRAN SINGLE MALT
(Isle of Arran Distillers)
TASTING NOTE: From ... one of the few remaining
independent distilleries in Scotland ... Although
the bard never actually visited the Isle of Arran, he
certainly would have seen it on clear days as he
laboured in the fields of Ayrshire on his father’s
farm. At that time there were several illicit stills on
Arran which produced whisky. The hooch was
shipped to Dunure in Ayrshire – then the centre of
the illegal whisky trade – before being shipped to
the gentry in Scotland’s major cities where they
“took the Arran waters”. This is an eloquent smooth
dram, never chill filtered. The nose is of spiced
pear, malt and honey. The taste is light, fruity and
sweet at first, followed by a nutty, spiced finish.
Silky and smooth overall. Score: 90 (Margaret

TASTING NOTE: This is a terrific riesling, vintage
after vintage. Much of the vineyard work is done
by the sheep, who munch away at the leaves and
expose the grapes to the sun. Once the grapes
are ripe, winemaker Dave Johnson helps out, as
the sheep don’t have the dexterity to do all the
inside work. What you get from their combined
labour is a vibrant and delicious riesling that
comes across almost dry because the bright,
crisp acidity eats away at the residual sugar. The
flavours are lively, well structured, and show
beautiful layering ... Score: HHHHH (Rod

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013
California
TASTING NOTE: The 2013 vintage has earned
much praise as one of California’s very best ever

has gripped the state. The resulting wines offer
impressively ripe fruit and a distinct richness and

it’s floral, fruit forward and juicy, delivering great
purity in its cassis and fruit notes. The judicious

FORIS PINOT NOIR 2012

TASTING NOTE: The Steelhead Sonoma County
Pinot Noir 2013 is one of the most complex I’ve
had this year ... it’s a brooding and moody Pinot
Noir. It’s got a ferocious side with black cherry and
wet leaves on the palate. There’s anise on the
nose and a touch of cigar wrapper. It’s not muscular
or overly fruity. There’s an acidity that keeps the
fruit in check. (James Nokes, daily-chronicle.com,

The Rogue Valley is Oregon’s southernmost
recognized wine-growing region. The AVA was
established in 1991 and comprises four principal

If you like your Riesling bone dry, look no further.
This one, from a producer with 180 years of
winemaking history in the region, is crafted in
the classically dry Alsatian style. Look for aromas
and flavours of lemon, orchard fruits and
wildflowers, and pair it with fish and chips or
sausages and sauerkraut.
TASTING NOTE: This firmly tannic blend of
50-50 Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is still
developing. While its juicy black currant fruits are
right there, it needs another few years to soften
the dry, hard-edged tannins and minerality. The
juicy acidity at the end promises the wait will be

Arrive

with a family heirloom
It’s one thing to leave something special to your heirs, but it’s quite
another when they take that treasure and turn it into something even
grander. When you pour this rich, smooth and easy-to-enjoy blend,
with its layered dark fruit, smoke, tobacco and chocolate, you will be
pouring 158 years of dedication to the craft of winemaking from
California’s oldest family-owned winery. Legacy never tasted so good.
