As summer draws to
an end and autumn
rolls around, the
City continues to
play host to a huge
range of exciting,
engaging and unique
events. From live
performances and
street art, to ancient
hidden gems and
innovative exhibitions.
The City of London’s Roman
heritage is showcased this
season, with the Guildhall Yard
hosting Gladiator Games on
the site of Londinium’s original
Roman Amphitheatre (p17). The
Billingsgate Roman Bathhouse,
(p26) a hidden ancient gem
located underneath one of the
City’s office blocks, will be made
regularly accessible to the public
for the first time this autumn with
ticketed tours being organised by
the Museum of London.
Art-lovers will be flocking to the
City too, with many fantastic
exhibitions and special events.
The innovative multimedia
exhibition at Guildhall Art Gallery,
No Colour Bar: Black British Art in
Action 1960-1990, will continue
through autumn, following its
hugely successful launch in the
summer (p4). As you explore,
keep an eye out for Sculpture in
the City, the popular public art
exhibition, featuring a selection
of contemporary art pieces in
and around Bishopsgate and
St Mary Axe (p4).

Victorian London in

The Crime
Museum
Uncovered
The arrival of photography in
London in 1839 would change the
way people saw their city and
each other forever. The collections
at London Metropolitan Archives
contain an extraordinary range of
images from Queen Victoria’s
reign, recording the capital and its
people in stunning detail. This
exhibition presents some of the
most striking images of London
and Londoners from the era, from
the first known photograph of
the capital to the opening of the
Blackwall Tunnel, taking in the
Crystal Palace, the first Tube line
and life on the City’s streets.

Talbot House:
‘An Oasis in a
World Gone Crazy’
In 1915 army chaplain Philip
‘Tubby’ Clayton established the
Everyman’s Club at Talbot House
in the small town of Poperinge,
only a few miles from the front
line in Ypres. In this house, rank
was irrelevant, orders were
prohibited, and all soldiers were
encouraged to forget about
the war. This exhibition tracks the
story of Tubby and this ‘oasis’ for
soldiers during the First World War.
It will include items from Talbot
House, the memoirs of Tubby and
the actual hut in which he wrote
them after fleeing the Germans.
