Dear Parents, Students and Staff
School, Parent and Friends Special Event
This year the P&F have decided to hold a Winter Charity

provide a unique opportunity for the community to gather

social justice, to the wider community. The planning team

have worked hard to make this event special, however,
they are disappointed that the number of tickets purchased

Foundation Day
Friday was certainly a very special day here at St John’s. Fr Duane was joined by the alter servers: Joshua Le (Year 7) and
Michael Harrap (Year 7) as we shared the most beautiful Eucharistic celebration. I would personally like to commend all the
students who engaged in the Mass in such a reverent manner. Each of the house groups were led by their captains to affirm
their values. The fair that followed was such a great day. There were stalls of all descriptions and even a helicopter landing on
the oval. The day was prepared by each PALS group and their teacher and it was clearly evident the great planning they had
undertaken to ensure everyone had a wonderful community day.
Year 7 2017 Enrolments
We are currently conducting the Year 7, 2017 enrolment interviews, and as I meet with so many families it is very evident how
well respected our school community is within the Shoalhaven. For this I must acknowledge the staff, however it is our
student body and their families that take our message to the wider community in their actions and words. I am very proud of
our tradition in excellence in learning and community involvement and even more so the large number of staff and students
who live this vision.
P&F News
In addition to the entertainment, supper, drinks and good times to be
had at the upcoming Winter Charity Ball, some of the items to be
auctioned on the night include:
Dolphin Watch Cruises $100.00 voucher for 2 Adults & 2 Children;
Arnette Syndrome Men's Sunglasses $149.95 from Aquatique;
Various books from local book stores;
Surf wear related accessories from Aquatique;
Vouchers for products, services, and accommodation around Nowra
and Jervis Bay as well as many more exciting and generous
donations.
Please don't miss this opportunity to support this worthy cause, whilst
catching up with friends in the school community in a relaxed and
entertaining atmosphere.

Year 7 Enrolment Interviews
Travel
We are currently conducting the interviews for Year 7, 2017. We have heard
wonderful feedback from the parents and others in the local community about
St John’s. So many parents identify the way our students interact with the
broader community, naming memorable encounters while out shopping or in
their workplace when they have met St John’s students. It is no surprise to
me that this happens, often I see as I walk around the school and in the

P&F NEWS
Winter Charity Ball: Be sure to get your tickets for this fantastic event. A chance to socialise with fellow community
members whilst raising money for St Vinnies Food Van and the people of Timor Leste.
Athletics Carnival: Thank you to the parents and friends who volunteered their time to assist in the smooth running of
the annual St John’s Athletics Carnival. Your assistance is always greatly appreciated.
Next meeting: Monday 8 August 2016 at 7.00pm after school holiday break.
Mr John Eastment, President Ph: 0438 416 309
Sick Bay: Unfortunately with numerous 'bugs' going around, we have had a large number of
students attending sick bay. The office will call parents to pick up students who attend sick bay and
we ask that they are collected at your earliest possible convenience. Some students are reporting to
sick bay upon arrival at school in the morning. If your child is not well we ask that they are kept at
home. This avoids inconvenience for parents in having to collect them from school and circumvents
the spread of coughs and colds. If a student becomes sick during the day and needs to be collected
by a parent they must report to sick bay at the front office. Office staff will then contact parents. Students are not
permitted to use their mobile phones to arrange for their parents to collect them.

FROM THE SCIENCE FACULTY
Year 7 students have settled into their science classes and have been busy learning how to work in
a science laboratory; performing many experiments using specialist equipment and learning
standard procedures for separation techniques. Currently Year 7 students are undertaking a
Research Project in the Space unit where they will produce either a travel journal from planetary
visits, a report on a proposed colonisation of another planet, or review a news article reporting on
space research.
Year 8 are currently enjoying a range of practical chemistry
investigations. Term 1 saw them investigate geological systems on the
global scale and then take their new learning out in the field to
investigate the really interesting geology of the Kiama region, and
explore potential alternative energy solutions at the Lake Illawarra
Eco-Centre.
Year 9 have been studying waves and energy, then applying this
knowledge to the study of communication systems. Student research
projects have now been submitted and the students are awaiting
feedback from their teachers. There have been some really interesting
projects such as: ‘How does exercise indicate cardio-vascular fitness?’,
‘How does music affect your mood and your ability to carry out complex
functions?’, an investigation of bread moulds and many more questions
from our Year 9 students.
Year 10 had a really interesting
day at the Museum of Human
Diseases during Term 1. Our
students are now busy preparing
for, and are consequently talking
to their teachers regarding, Preliminary HSC subject selections for 2017
Sciences. I would encourage all Year 10 students to have a conversation with
either myself or their science teacher.
Years 11 & 12 Students have settled into their Preliminary coursesof Biology,
Chemistry, Earth and Environment Studies, Physics and Senior Science and will
be preparing for assessment tasks in the coming weeks. Our 2016 HSC
students are well and truly on the home stretch with another assessment task
later in the term and their trial examinations early in Term 3. Study plans and
early preparation should be occupying their time for the next few months.
The teachers in the science faculty are really amazing people who are dedicated
to ensuring that our students have an incredible learning experience here at St
John’s, I am very thankful to lead this team.

FOUNDATION DAY
Last Friday 13 May 2016, the St John’s community gathered together to celebrate
Foundation Day. Weeks of planning and anticipation resulted in a fantastic day,
enjoyed by all! The whole school mass was prayerful and the students all
participated with reverence and respect. Father Duane’s homily was wonderful to
listen to, empowering the students and everyone present to accept themselves for
who they are on the inside, and know that God’s love is ever present. The Mass was
followed by the cake cutting and then the whole school fair. The students worked
within their PALS groups to provide food and entertainment for each other. An
afternoon full of creativity, laughter and colourful energy. The day was such a
positive experience and a huge success in fundraising for the St Vinnies Food Van
and the people of Timor Leste. A special mention must go to Mrs Pauline Banting for
once again, tirelessly organising “What’s in the Box?”, thank you Pauline, to you and your
helpers. Well done St John’s!

SECOND-HAND UNIFORMS
With the change of season and the subsequent change in uniforms, please be advised the
school is grateful for uniform donations, which can be very helpful for families experiencing
financial difficulties. Our Second-Hand Uniform supplies are desperately low and St John’s is
always appreciative of donations of uniforms in good, clean condition to add to our clothing pool.
Also available is the online option of selling your unwanted uniforms.
Go to: Parent Info / Second Hand Uniforms and download/print a For Sale form. Complete the form and return it to the
school office. Your listing will then be added to the SECOND-HAND UNIFORM REGISTER advertised on the school
website. We would like to thank those families who have recently made donations of uniforms to the school.

WORDS Michael Grose
The trick to
being at your
parenting best
Parenting is place of great joy, but it’s also a
place of great struggle.
say stupid! Thank goodness for our lizard
We struggle with our role as it’s
constantly evolving and changing.
pre-frontal cortex can do it’s rational thing
brain. When I’m safe and feeling calm my
once more. This system has served us well,
We struggle with external factors such
as the changing face of technology and it’s
impact on kids’ daily lives.
We struggle with factors we can’t control
such as the messages kids get from the
media and their peers that we rather they
didn’t receive.
But the biggest struggle for most of us
happens within the grey matter between
our ears. It’s the battle that goes on
between our lizard brain (where the fight or
flight response occurs) and our pre-frontal
cortex (where reasoning and calculation)
occurs.
The pre-frontal cortex (put your hand
on your forehead and you’re there) is a
cool, calm and rational place. This article is
being written from that space. The lizard
brain sits way back in the middle of our
brain and is programmed to take over from
our pre-frontal cortex when we’re under
threat or stress. If I took a phone call about
an imminent bomb threat while writing
this article my lizard brain would take over
and I’d be out of my office in a heartbeat.
Writing would become impossible, not to
keeping us safe for an eternity.
Unfortunately our lizard brain, the
simple creature that it is, can’t differentiate
between a significantly stressful situation
such as a bomb threat and an everyday
stressor such as a noisy sibling fight that
occurs right under our nose. Our limbic
system responds in exactly the same
way – the lizard brain takes over from our
pre-frontal cortex so you’ll either fight
(argue, yell, lash out) or flee (get away fast)
regardless of the stress. Both situations
would elicit the same type of physical
response such as an increase in heartbeat,
sweaty palms and shortness of breath. Only
the severity and intensity of the response
is different.
Just when we need to be at our
parenting best
So the great struggle for many parents, and
also the great irony, is that when we need
to be at our parenting best (when we’re
responding to poor behaviour or a child’s
genuine cries for help) our lizard brain
often takes over and we’re at our parenting
worst.
That’s why most of us know how we
want to respond and communicate with
our kids when we’re calm but when we are
under intense pressure not only can’t we
find the words we need but we lose our
cool as well!
The good news is your lizard brain can
be tricked into working for you, not against
you. It takes patience and practice. Here’s
how:
1 Recognise the situations and
the symptoms
Self-knowledge is the best knowledge
you can have. When you understand
the situations that cause you stress and
bring you quickly to high emotion then
you can prepare yourself in advance
for such situations. Also when you
understand your typical physiological
responses you are well positioned to
control your responses. Our physical
responses vary: I generally feel
nauseous; become physically agitated
and my breath gets very high in my
chest when I’m under intense stress.
Knowing this has been a huge help to
me staying calm in situations where I
used to over-react.

Building parent-school partnerships
... The trick to being at
your parenting best ...
2 Train yourself to STOP!
The lizard brain wants you to act fast – to get away, to
lash out, to defend yourself – when you’re under threat or
stress. So going against this natural urge is a challenge but
it can be done. Develop the habit of doing nothing when
you find yourself under parenting stress. STOP rather than
act impulsively. Don’t let the lizard-brain win!
3 Step away and breathe
Deep nasal breathing is the quickest way to bring down your
physical symptoms and rein in negative thoughts (“I’m going
to &&** him!”) that feed your lizard brain. Step away or turn
slightly away from the stressful situation to help you breath
slowly and deeply.
4 Think of your Best parenting self
Inspire your pre-frontal cortex to trump your lizard brain by
activating an image of your ‘best’ or ‘ideal’ self as a parent.
First you need to work out when you’re at your parenting
best – it maybe when you’re patient, caring, loving, calm…
(You can learn this powerful process in my Parenting with
the Meta-Moment course available in Parentingideas Club)
Your “Best Parenting Self “is the motivator to help you refrain
from making emotional responses that you’ll regret later.
5 Now act!
Now that your pre-frontal cortex is winning again it’s time
to think of the best possible response to a tricky parenting
situation: which may be to ignore behaviour; use appropriate
language or just listen calmly when your child is in distress.
So how often does your lizard brain win when you experience
parenting stress? If it always comes out on top then you’ll find it
hard to parent as you’d like. You’ll be fighting your limbic system
as well as your kids. Get it under control and you’ll be better
placed to respond to your kids as you’d like to in the cool, calm
light of day.

To be eligible for a school travel pass, students may
need to live a minimum distance from their school:
Years K-2 (Infants)
Years 7-12 (Secondary)
2.0km straight line distance or 2.9km walking.
Who needs to apply
Most students who already have a school travel pass
in 2016 won't need to re-apply for next year.
However, you need to update student details online
if the student:
• Is moving from Year 2 to Year 3
• Is moving from Year 6 to Year 7
• Is changing schools or campuses
• Is changing address
Step 3
The school then sends the endorsed application
to Transport for NSW. You will receive an email
confirming the outcome of your application. If the
application is approved, Transport for NSW will
inform your local bus or transport operator who will
send a school travel pass to the student’s school, or
in some cases, to the student’s address.
A parent or guardian must apply for students 15
years and under. Students 16 years and over must
apply for themselves.
Carbon copy forms are no longer being accepted
after Term 2, 2016. To download a paper form
visit apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts.
How can I apply if I don’t have
internet access?
Call 131 500 for assistance with your application.
Is a school travel pass valid outside
school hours?
School travel passes are only for travel to and from
school. So for travel after hours, on weekends
or during school holidays, students will need to
purchase a ticket.
What if there’s no public transport in
my area?
In areas where there is no public transport, eligible
NSW residents may receive a subsidy for transporting
the student to school by private vehicle. For details
visit transportnsw.info/school-students.
How do I apply if the student is in a
shared parenting situation and needs
to travel from two addresses?
Each parent (or the student if aged 16 or over)
needs to make a separate application for each
address. The same eligibility criteria apply.
