T
HE Rotherham Advertiser has been part of the
fabric of Rotherham life for more than 150
years.
Many generations of local families have read the
paper and followed the development of our town
through the pages of the Advertiser.
Since it was first printed on January 2 1858 it has
become a trusty friend of thousands of locals and
evolved alongside the town to what it is today and,
while Rotherham and the Advertiser itself may have
changed beyond all recognition from the days of
Queen Victoria, our values remain the same.
Back in 1858 the four page Advertiser cost just 1p
and was printed form the back of a shop in the
Rotherham High Street. Now owned by the Garnett
Dickinson Group – which has interests in printing,
publishing, digital media, mailing and marketing and
is based at Manvers in Wath‐Upon‐Dearne –
The Advertiser is read by around 65,000 every week
and regularly comes in at more than 100 pages.
It regularly wins awards and has been named
Yorkshire and Humber Weekly Newspaper of the
Year for two consecutive years, because of its
value‐for‐money and mix of news, sport and
entertainment.
It remains the flagship of the business, proudly
shouting about what makes Rotherham great, while
taking to task those who threaten its varied commu‐
nities.
Undoubtedly, the paper and the business in general
have faced threats over the decades, but while others
have sold out to multi‐national media empires, the
Garnett Dickinson group has remained fiercely
independent and, just as importantly, family‐run. In
1898 a Mr John Dickinson was appointed company
secretary and editor and the same Dickinson family
remain in the company title and run the business
today.
As well as the Advertiser, Garnett Dickinson
Publishing Ltd produce free papers the Rotherham
Record and the Dearne Valley Weekender as well as
the glossy lifestyle magazine Chase.
Obviously, as times have changed so has the media
world and the Advertiser now has its own website,
which includes local news, sport and entertainment,
as well as regular video highlights. Our reporters also
have their own Twitter accounts, allowing them to
instantly inform followers of what is going on in the
borough.
Our advertising team offer a series of solutions
when it comes to putting your business in our
publications ¬– reaching more than 250,00 people a
week in total ¬– which, as well as our main products,
feature regular supplements including a weekly
“Keep‐it” special targeted to a specialist market.
Emphasising our commitment to the printed word,
Garnett Dickinson Print can print everything from
high quality glossy magazines to brochures,
catalogues, leaflets and business cards on site at
Manvers.
The Rotherham Advertiser and Garnett Dickinson
are committed to the town and believe that the
information contained within our bright new media
pack will offer you a solution to reaching the market
that is right for your business. We hope you agree.
