After thirty years in the taxi service in
Mattituck,DavidPmishsaysifhehaditall
todooverhewouldn'tchangeathing.That's
because, as he says, "I've met so many
wonderful people all thmugb the yars in
this bNin6s...it's been very rewarding".
The {act that he loves peopleis very evident
in Mr. Parrish's genue, courteous and
friendly manner and his efforts to provide
reliable senice to all his customers,
whether they are local or summer visitors,
are mfailing.
"All of Connecticutseemsto come here by
boat", he says, testifying to the busy
smmer months when the passengersfrom
the marinas along Mattituck Inlet keep his
phone ringing steadily. As kind to the
itinerantvisitorsastofriendshe'sknomall
his liIe, Mr. Prrisb is a sort of uofficial
ambasador of good wiu for Mattituck,
leaving many after one meeting with a
wam feling about the area.
Today, on the tbirtieth mniversary of
beoming Mattituck's fint licensedtaxi cab
operator, Mr. Panish looks back with quiet
pride on the fact that in all those years
neither he, nor any passengerin his taxi
cab, has ever been injued or involved in a
mishap. He received but one traffic ticket in
those 30 ysrs and thst was for driving 46
mils an hou in a 3i-mile zone. An injued
ladyoncrutchswaswaitingforhimatthe
train station.
In the early yurs be was on 24-hourcall
and bad frequent long distance rms to the
city. Before the advent of schml bus service
in Mattituck he and his wife, Elizabeth, used
to ferry the children back and forth to
schml, sometimes making five or six trips
each way. Like her husband, Mrs. Pamish,
who now drivs the Mattituck schml bus,
has the love ild respect of her charges.
On call from 6 a.m. to 11p.m. each day, at
prgent he doesn't have any definite plans
for retirement except to say he's loking
forward to the day when his son, Billy
Panish, takes over tbe business and continues it in tbe proud Panish tradition.
