Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
The 11th Annual Tahoe Adventure
Film Festival, in the MontBleu
Theatre, hosted by Todd Offenbacher
from Tahoe TV, was another sold
out event that brought Tahoe locals
together for an exciting evening. Mixing
DJ music, go-go dancers, raffle prizes,
Little Jon’s flips, (Todd’s mini-me) the
best extreme athletes and thrill seekers
on film doing unheard of things that
pumps your adrenaline and a cool
social scene to the yearly mix of fun
for all. Offenbacher has traveled the
globe and climbed many mountains and
steep boulders himself, over the years.
Film clips that showed base jumpers,
a guy in a wing suit that leaps off cliffs
and flys around, mountain biking on dirt
spines in china’s Gobi Desert, surfers
on the largest waves ever in Tahiti,
skiers that scare you with their talents,
cool cy cling races, free solo climb of
Yosemite’s three largest rock walls and
more. Tahoe’s Cory Rich was awarded
the “Golden Camelot” for his amazing
work on film and photos. His film,
“A New Perspective” documents David
Lama and Peter Ortner’s ascent of the
Trango Tower in Pakistan with a remote
controlled helicopter that flew to 22,000
feet. The Lake Tahoe Entertainer is one
of the sponsors of this popular event
and party.
MontBleu has the WFC MMA at
The Lake January 12th. Funny man
Mario Cantone January 26th, he was
in “Sex in the City” TV show many
times. Opal Nightclub has great drink
specials, go-go dancers, body painting
and DJ music. Lake Tahoe Cigar
is also located inside MontBleu with
Tahoe’s largest walk-in humidor. They
also have NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL
items for all your sports enjoyment. You
can even go to a Pool Party this time
of year on January 20th that MontBleu
will host once again.
The Improv at Harveys with host
Howie Nave, has new comics each
week that’s always funny and great
to bring friends, family and dates to
have a good time. January 30-February
3rd, Bobby Collins will be headlining.
I’ve always liked Bobby throughout the
years he’s played Tahoe. He’s opened
for Frank Sinatra, Cher, Dolly Parton,
and Tony Bennett, to name a few.
Collins has a wide range comedy of
observational material that keeps him
busy with 200 stand up performances
a year. From Queens NY, Bobby has
made 6 albums that include, “On the
Inside”, “Out of Bounds” and “Your Not
coming With Us”. He’s hosted cable
shows and comedy specials, been in
films, TV shows and talk shows for
years. He likes comedians from Red
Skeleton to Redd Fox, go check him
out.
Harrah’s has in their South Shore
Room, January 5th, Tainted Love,
80’s music with songs you forgot about
and will really like to hear again. They
create a party atmosphere. January
12th is Jonny Lang. He always puts
on a great show. This Grammy winner
mixes blues, gospel and rock, for a tasty
blend to your ears. His guitar solos are
hot and his voice is powerful. Jonny
has toured and opened for the Rolling
Stones, Aerosmith, B.B. King, and Sting
to name a few. He was also invited to
the White House and played an event
when President Clinton was in office.
In 1997, his “Lie to Me”, put him on the
road to stardom. January 19th Gregg
Allman returns to their showroom with
his classic American rock and blues
style. The words “Southern Rock” was
invented when The Allman Brothers
Band created a new sound in 1969.
On Keyboards and vocals, they have
classic hits like, “Whipping Post”,
“Melissa”, “Midnight Rider”, to name a
few. Gregg’s solo career in 1987 with
“I’m no Angel” was a huge hit. He was
married to Cher from 1975-79. His
book of memories of life and music
called “My Cross to Bear” came out
in 2012. You’ll also hear some gospel
style music. February 2nd Ben Fold’s
Five with their alternative rock, pop and
indie mix. 1997 hit song “Brick”, brought
this energetic trio of piano-bass-drums
to the airwaves. Vex Nightclub in 2013
will have a new club coming. Catch
aerial shows, go-go dancers and DJ
music there.
Horizon has Illusion Fusion
starring Alex Ramon. Magic, comedy,
world-class illusions, that’s fun for
the whole family—kids will love him.
Alex has been in Tahoe for one year
performing and many events around
town also. Cabo Wabo inside Harveys,
has entertainment every night with food
and drink specials, at Sammy Hagar’s
place for fun. Sushi Pier had their shred
for Sushi event that was on 12-12-12,
that had all proceeds go to Step into the
Blue. On-course events put together
live competition of skiers and boarders.
They had games for all ages, DJ Mo
Funk, raffle prizes, drink specials and
sushi of course. Grand Central Pizza
and Pasta has Tuesday teens and tots
night with games and movies, Friday
and Saturday open mic nights, and
Sunday has wings and pizza specials.
Lots of Superbowl parties to check out
in our ads.
And remember, cherish yesterday,
dream tomorrow, live today. Have fun,
You’re in Tahoe!
Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Winter is here and Late-Nite
Productions is moving full speed ahead!
I am looking out my office window right
now at two feet of light fluffy snow on top
of everything in sight. We have already
had a few different shows in a few different
areas to get the Winter started. Late-Nite
Productions will be busy this year hosting
amazing Concerts in Reno, Sacramento,
Mammoth Lakes and of course all around
Lake Tahoe!
The Kottonmouth Kings will blaze
through for the first time in over a decade!
This is happening on Saturday, January
19th in the Frank Sinatra Showroom /
Cal Neva Resort in North Lake Tahoe.
This venue has quickly become a Tahoe
Locals favorite place to see a show. Call
up now to reserve your room and get ready
for the party! It all started seventeen years
ago, deep in the suburbs of Southern
California, in the aftermath of a punk rock
& hip hop revolution - an unlikely group
of misfits formed a musical partnership
that would ignite an entire generation of
music loving, free thinking, bass bumping,
rip-hop junkies. KMK has become one
of the worlds most radical and savagely
independent underground musical forces.
KMK is fine flying under the radar - the
Kings have dug underground tunnels that
most people don't even know exist. KMK
is responsible for creating one of the most
intense and largest subculture movements
in modern times, as well as connected
millions of Kings and Kweens worldwide.
Next up, Roch Gigz will take the
stage on Thursday, January 24th - again
at the historic Frank Sinatra Showroom
/ Cal Neva Resort in North Lake Tahoe.
Selected as one of 106 KMEL’s Top 10
Freshman Rappers of the Bay Area,
21-year-old San Francisco native Roach
Gigz has gone from virtually unknown to
one of the hottest artists on the West Coast
in just four years. Born and raised in San
Francisco, CA, Roach was conceived in
Nicaragua during the Contra and Sandinista
war. “If people have only heard my music
and know my name but have never seen
me, they are surprised to find out I’m not
Black,” says Roach. “From my experience
growing up, race was never really an issue.
I’m just an authentic and cool dude and I
think my fans see that. It ain’t about race.
It’s about the music.” With two successful
mixtapes under his belt Roach is currently
preparing his debut album, tentatively titled
Therapy Sessions. “I’ve seen the hunger in
his eyes since day one,” says Mistah F.A.B.
“With the proper support he may get his
chance to be the new voice of the modern
day Bay Area.” With his unconventional
style and undeniable charisma it is only a
matter of time before the rest of the world
feels the same way.
Now, it brings me great pleasure to tell
you about the next show. This is why I do
what I do. To work with and produce shows
for an artist in their humble beginnings and
then to see them reach recognition as one
of the biggest and most successful Pop
acts of all time and then to bring them back
to our little town of Lake Tahoe once again
is beyond amazing. I am talking about The
Black Eyed Peas. I had produced a handful
of Concerts with them both in the Bay Area
and right here in Tahoe (back in the late
90's and early 2000's). Although I am not
bringing the entire group (Tahoe doesn't
have a Venue big enough!) I am bringing
one of the stars - Taboo, for an exclusive
and intimate party! This is happening
Friday, February 8th at the Montbleu Resort
Theater in South Lake Tahoe.
Taboo has taken his music all over
the world and The Black Eyed Peas have
sold an estimated 60 million records to
date. Taboo's solo live performance is
an interactive experience bringing his
DJ talents to the forefront blending them
with high energy dance, MC and crowd
interaction. Taboo has been a driving force
behind the unique style and energy of The
Black Eyed Peas and brings that heart
stopping performance to Lake Tahoe one
night only! When asked about the live show,
Taboo describes it as "an open format. I like
to call it the 'Taboo Experience'. DJing is
one part of it. There's also a performance
element where I'm incorporating my own
material, some of the songs that I've done
on my own and with The Black Eyed Peas.
I felt like I needed to incorporate something
other than just DJing. "I have local b-boys
or dancers perform with me, and we do a
couple different dance sections as a visual.
We also have really good visuals behind us,
as far as the LED screens. We incorporate
video content.You're getting the all-around
experience."
Lastly, don't forget to check out
7800' when you are out riding or skiing at
Kirkwood. Its got a warm, local feel and
they refuse to gouge you with resort prices.
To prove it, they will host FREE concerts
every Saturday night at 9:30pm throughout
the season. Here is your lineup for January:
Deep Fryed Mojo (1/5), Dads LP's (1/12),
Groovebox (1/19), Drinking With Clowns
(1/26), Mojo Green (2/2).
Big shoutout to those that support us
the most: Sierra At Tahoe Ski Resort,
Tahoe Blue Vodka, Teaz N' Pleaz and
775HipHop.com.
Keep and eye out for Andre Nickatina,
Smoov-E and Too $hort coming up next!
"Keep the Vibe Alive" ~ LateNiteBilly
Comedy From The Mountain
Hello Tahoe and how about that snow
huh? I don’t know about the rest of the
country but for Tahoe all we need is a
decent amount of the white stuff to keep
us sustainable. The rest of the country can
have their fiscal cliff, debt ceiling and bipartisan bickering because for me they’re
the ones that live in the land of make
believe but up here? Anything over 5000 ft
is considered ‘sane’ in my book. I think the
Mayans were accurate but instead of last
month being the end of the world I think
pretty much 2012 was the end of the world.
2013 is already the year I’m counting on
and to be honest already feeling better
than I was this time last year. New Year’s
Resolutions? Nah, after awhile they just
pile up and takes too much planning. I’m
going day by day now and stayin’ with that
my friends.
A good friend even though we don’t
see each other every day (or month and
sometimes a year) would have to be
Brian Dunkleman. He was here about
a year ago and if memory serves had a
very good time. We call him ‘Dunkie’ and
every person on earth wants to know
why did he walk away from American Idol
after its very first season? After Idol's first
season back in ’02 Dunkleman (who cohosted with Ryan Seacrest) decided that
he “didn’t want to return for season two in
order to pursue other opportunities in the
world of TV and feature films. It was my
decision” Dunkleman told Inside Edition. “I
traveled for about six months then I joined
an acting studio here in LA and I studied
for about a year and a half with one of
the top acting coaches” said Dunkie. As
I’ve said countless times good comedy
comes from personal tragedy so you know
Dunkie is at the top of his game. I wouldn’t
miss this show because I can’t (being host
and all). Featuring will be Carlie & Doni
the week of Jan 2nd through the 6th.
Charles Fleischer is the only
comic who does a one hour show all by
himself. No middle act just the brilliance of
Fleischer. He’s funny, very quick on his feet
and brilliant. Oh sure he’s a great comic
and also has appeared in a ton of movies,
television and countless voiceovers for
movies, commercials and television
but I think he’s from a parallel universe.
Charles once told me, “I’m thinking the
universe is either a dodecahedron or a
cheeseburger and for me, that’s a winwin.” He introduced me to the concept
known as Moleeds and how it relates to
all things numerical in the universe. He’s
fascinated by the relationship between
the numbers 27 and 37. As Charles puts
it, “The numbers between those two (27
and 37) affect everything from protons,
neutrons to croutons.” That is the “blueprint
for infinity” called Moleeds. Yeah, I know
I too am scratching my head. Fleischer
has had (and continues) one of the most
amazing careers ever. He made his TV
debut with an appearance on “Rowan &
Martin’s Laugh-In” back in 1972 followed
by appearances on a number of shortlived variety and sketch comedy programs
and sitcoms that included “Keep on
Trucking” (on ABC in1975), “The Richard
Pryor Show” (on NBC in 1977) and as a
sweathog during the 1978-79 season of
“Welcome Back Kotter.” Yes! “Welcome
Back Kotter!” In 1983 Alan Thicke tapped
Fleischer to be part of this comedy troupe
performing sketch segments on his latenight program, “Thicke of the Night.”
There are so many other TV credits but
it would take forever to list them here. On
the big screen (again, too many to mention
here) he did a wide variety of flicks such
as “Die Laughing” (1980), “Night Shift”
(1982) and “Bad Dreams” (1988) before
hitting pay dirt with his next project voicing
the title character in the groundbreaking
movie, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”
He was so good in this flick that director
Robert Zemeckis used Charles to voice
several other characters in the film that
included Benny The Cab and the two
sinister weasels, Greasy and Psycho.
He has a new flick coming out which is
an apocalyptic thriller called “Dystopia.”
Check Fleischer out the week of January
9th through the 13th.
What a nice way to bring in 2013 with
Chicago native John Caponera. ‘Cap’ (as
we affectionally refer to him as) was part
of “The Godfathers of Comedy” show that
aired on Showtime this past year. He’s also
been on “The Good Life,” hosted Comedy
Central’s “Jocks” and ESPN’s “Talk II.”
He guest-starred on NBC’s long running
hospital drama, “ER,“ in addition
to “Love & War,” “Blossom” and
one of my favorite cable shows,
“Tales From The Crypt” on HBO.
But acting isn’t his only talent.
Nope. In addition to his stand up
skills he has an uncanny talent
for voice impressions.
Okay.
I should narrow that down:
sports impressions particularly
those of famous Chicago sports
announcers. One of the funniest
bits he does during his act
is recreating the sounds and
mannerisms of the late, great
Chicago
Cub’s
announcer,
Harry Caray. But Cap goes beyond just
impersonating him. He has him in crazy
situations while broadcasting the event
at the same time. You have to see it to
really appreciate the bit. My other favorite
voice he does is that of Vin Scully, long
time voice of the LA Dodgers. Howell J.
Malham Jr. of The Chicago Tribune wrote
of Caponera, “Every so often the kingdom
of comedy is graced with a gifted, naturally
refined performer who can effectively
demonstrate the transcendental powers
of the medium while making it look
deceptively easy.” John is a Chicago
native and always will be even though he
now resides in southern California. His
Howie Nave
Chicago roots come through when you
get him started on the topic of sports.
time voice of the LA Dodgers. Michael
Paskevich of The Las Vegas ReviewJournal calls John, “Unafraid of letting
a room grow quiet Caponera sets his
own intentionally erratic pace, pausing to
perfection to complement his oddly timed
but rewarding comic insights. Appearing
with Cap is David Gee, another favorite
up here and a very funny individual and
both will up here January 23rd through the
27th.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys every
Wednesday through Sunday.
Fly Fishing
WOW… we have snow and it is
going to be a great New Year! Coming
off of a tough year for water, it is exiting
to see this much snow which will equal
water for the fish in the Spring. As for
now, Winter fly fishing is going to take
a bit of a hit. Check out these fisheries
below and wet a line when you get the
chance, there will always be something
worth a fish! Guides will be available
all Winter long if you would like to get
out and fish. Give us a call at 530-5418208.
East Carson River Fishing
Report – Currently flowing at 140+ CFS
and fluctuating with storms.
The catch and release section
below Hangman’s Bridge: Open for
Winter fishing which will be somewhat
difficult until the March timeframe. If
anything, Midges and Baetis will be the
diet with the occasional streamer bite
on warmer days.
West Carson River Fishing
Report – Closed until Spring… You
will see people fishing on occasion, be
nice and let them know it is closed until
the last Saturday in April.
West Walker River Fishing
Report - Currently flows are variable
but fishable in Nevada.
CA sections closed! The Nevada
sections can be fun and stay open all
year. Try The Hoye Canyon section
above Wellington or the Wilson Canyon
section below Smith Valley. Another fun
fishery is the Tube below Topaz Lake
which can hold some pretty nice fish as
well as stockers from NDOW. The flows
will vary with storms and usually fishes
well on cloudy days. Mostly Midges and
Baetis throughout the winter months.
Streamer fishing will get them moving
on warm days!
East Walker River Fishing Report
- Flows are 33+ CFS.
CA section: Flows are at Winter
minimums with Midges and Baetis
on the menu. Pattern sizes have
gone back to 20s and 22s to keep it
interesting. On occasion the fish will
eat off of the surface but don’t count
on it for now. Cloudy days are worth a
look! Otherwise down and dirty in the
buckets. Access is difficult after many
storms over the holidays. Bring your
Snow Shoes for the first few weeks of
January.
Nevada section: The Rosachi
ranch is fishing but has snow on the
ground. Best fishing is during the
middle part of the day. Small Baetis
nymphs and midge pupae are working
with the occasional dry take. Attractor
dries used as an indicator will fool them
now and again. The smaller the fly the
better for the next month or so!
Little Truckee River Fishing
Report- Flows are 130+ CFS.
Still plenty of fish in the system.
Look for fish on the rise if you can
get up the road. Otherwise get your
snow machines ready for winter
access. Midges most of the Winter with
occasional Baetis and Winter Stones.
Access will be the challenge!
Truckee River (Ca) Fishing
Report - Flows are variable.
Year round section (CA) below
267 Bridge.
Hit and miss fishing
all winter long. Access will depend
on snow coverage. Midges Mostly all
Winter and looking for Baetis on Cloudy
days. Lots of snow at the end of the
year so be ready for tough access!
Truckee River (Nv) Fishing
Report: The lower the better as we get
deeper into Winter. Look for good days
when the air temps hit 45F or better.
Victor Babbit
Midges, Baetis and Streamers!
Pyramid Lake - Open and fishing
fairly well but mostly from boats and
float tubes.
Some fish have been
caught fishing from shore and a few big
ones as well which is great for Winter
season fishing! The fish are eating the
Chubs so look for pods of bait fish and
throw streamers to match! Indicator
fishing has also started with rumor of a
20 pound fish on a Chironomid.
Indian Creek Reservoir – There
are still plenty of fish in Indian Creek
and they stocked just prior to all the
storms! Access is going to be the
problem and possible Ice. Buggers in
Black, Olive and or Brown have been
working well. Check for Ice as we get
deeper into the New Year.
Caples Lake: Thin layer of Ice just
before the storms, maybe 2-4 inches
of Ice and 4+ feet of snow on top
of it. Should be good to go by the
first of January after the snow settles.
Kastmasters, Worms or Power Bait!
Red Lake Fishing Report - Lots
of snow on top of 3-5 inches of Ice.
Should be ready to fish by the first of
the year! Kastmasters, Worms and
Power Bait!
Get out and fish, the season never
ends around the Tahoe area!
