This Ol’ House...
...needs lots of loving care.
On the Calendar
 Sunday, May 15—Wine
Dinner at Florentine’s,
4-7 p.m.
It’s been a while since our
House has gotten a new
coat of paint, and it’s beginning to show.
House Maintenance Chair
Lisa Quental estimates it
will cost upward of
$30,000. A lot of prep
work must be done, before
painting can even begin,
and the shingles are labor
intensive, as well. It’s not
a job for amateurs!
 Monday, May 23—
Orange County Docents
meeting at Key Ranch,
9:30-1 p.m.
 Sunday, May 8—House
open for tours, 2-4 p.m
 Tuesdays, May 9, July
12—PFS Board meeting,
7 p.m.
 Sunday, June 12
(tentative)—Annual
Meeting, 4 p.m.
Oooo, Slivers!—PFS President John Walcek, left, finds the cellar door risky sitting, with all
the chipped-off paint. Paint is chipping and peeling on every side of the House, and green
singles are faded.

From the President’s Desk
ime keeps marching on,
taking its toll on things as
well as people. We just
completed an inventory and
felt organized, then malfunctioning sprinklers in the
planters flooded the basement several times. Our
House Maintenance Committee, under the able direction of Lisa Quental, has
been busy lately.
It is with sadness and
prayers that we accept the
resignation of Treasurer
Betty Orr, who’s fighting
lung cancer. I always felt in
good hands with her
up-to-date and understandable bookwork, and her cool
and pleasant demeanor is a
pleasure to be around.
An eventful Springtime sure
flew by. For sounds, our 20th
Annual Chamber Concert
season wrapped up this
month. There’s nothing like
enjoying classical music performed up close and intimate
in the front parlor of this classic house.
And, visually, for the first artist reception of the year, the
Bradford House Gallerie featured watercolors and
sketches by William Ayres. It
was an impressive, nicely
framed display, with many
visitors commenting on how
the artwork looked like it belonged in the house. And we
made a handsome amount
from print sales and donations!
Activities VP Beth Woodard, is
shaping up and sure to be a fun
and memorable event at Florentine’s in Fullerton. Seating is
limited, so sign up now.
Be sure to check the Founders
Society Bradford House exhibit
in the display case at the end of
the Local History Wall at City
Hall. Good work, Curator Jan
Henderson.
A new slate of officers will be
installed at our June meeting.
We look forward to another active year keeping the house up
and open to the community. A
special thanks to this year’s
board and members for your
efforts and contributions. You
make the Founders that special
“extended family” around this
grand old house in Placentia.
Our annual wine-tasting fundraiser, under the direction of
House friends come calling
It’s always a special treat
to be able to show off
“our” House to friends and
family, but for long-time
PFS member Marie
Schmidt, 93, and Eleanor
Moore, 88, it was a chance
to remember their
friendship of many years.
They met through the
Junior Women’s Club in
Cedar Grove, NJ, and
kept in touch as their
lives took them a continent away from each
other.
When Eleanor came from her
Point St. Lucie, FL, home to
visit in April, Marie enlisted
her to help set the dining
room table for the Sunday
tours at the Bradford House.
“Eleanor loved our House,”
Marie said. “She just wished
her community had a place
like ours.”
She and Jack moved to
Eugene, Ore., in 1991. In 1995,
Jack died of cancer.
Karen moved back to Placentia in 2009 for better job opportunities and to be near her
sister and is enjoying reconnecting with the House.
Karen Riley’s recent visit to
the House was bittersweet,
taking her back to March 11,
1989, when she married husband Jack.
“We had almost 100 guests,”
she said. “The furniture was
moved out, so we could set
up chairs.
Enjoying old times—PFS member Marie Schmidt, left,
invites Eleanor Moore to join her at the Bradford table.
“Walking down these stairs
brings back the memories,”
she said.
Remembering—Karen Riley
recalls her walk down the
stairs at her House wedding.

Good Art—Above, Jewel Hollingworth, Zoe Berry,
Jim Ayres, Diane Harris, Gloria Abrams, Charles and
Mary Juster were among the more than 50 guests
who enjoyed works by William Ayres on April 17,
when the Bradford House became the Bradford
House Gallerie.
At top right, Vickie and Bill Hite, Placentia, browse
catalog of prints available to purchase. Guests
bought $500 worth of prints, a portion of which was
given to PFS.
At right, Mary Castner and John Walcek welcome
Gloria Abrams and Jewel Hollingworth to the kitchen,
where refreshments were served to guests.
Jim Ayres, the artist’s nephew, curated the show and
furnished food and flowers, adding to the afternoon’s
success.

The Placentia Founders Society was established in 1974 to preserve and maintain the Bradford House, which was built in 1902. Now it is a living museum,
providing a glimpse into the lives of a pioneering family who made their fortune in the citrus industry. The House is open to the public for docent-led
tours from 2-4 p.m. the second Sunday of each month.
Bradford House goes to City Hall
The Bradford House past and present is
featured through May 20 in the first rotating exhibit in Placentia City Hall.
PFS gave the display case, which was in
the House office, to the City for showcasing City organizations and activities.
“I spent many sleepless nights deciding
how to present what is important to
PFS,” said Curator Jan Henderson, right, who
mounted the display with the help of Education VP Kay Pfaffle, center. Becky Cherene ,
left, City building permit technician, worked
with the team as liaison to the City Historical Committee, who plans the display
schedule.
PFS will have future opportunities to use
the venue for exhibits.
