DAVIS BIKE CLUB RACE TEAM VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2012 DBC RACE TEAM NEWSLETTER 160 Miles. 13,000 Feet. Another DBC Race Team Training Camp in Bodega Bay For the 3rd year the Davis Bike Club Race Team held camp at the UC Davis Bodega Bay Marine Lab campus for a weekend of early season training rides and team bonding. The event was created and continues to be organized by Jason Eiserich after he spent a weekend at the UC Davis Aggie’s training camp at the same location. This year, nearly 30 DBC Race Team members signed up for the event over the February 11-12 weekend. The warm, dry winter means that early season fitness is higher than usual and for the Davis Bike Club Race Team, it has translated into several outstanding early season results. Above Ryan Ode! The Freunds followed this up with 5th and 6th place finishes at the Early Bird Road Race. UC Davis Cycling Team. The D B C R a c e Te a m w a s w e l l represented in this early season classic, especially by the Junior Race Team which suited 11 riders in the blue and orange. Of course, this does not include Junior Alexander Freund who raced in the most competitive group of Pro and Category 1, 2, and 3 riders along with Alex Walters, Michael Claudio, Jeff Schaller, Mike Pugh, Russ White, and Chris HarlandDunaway. Pugh along with Karl Wurzbach also raced in a fast Men’s Masters 35+ Category 1/2/3 race. The Valley of the Sun stage race is a threeday event in which professional and amateur cyclists of different categories compete over three days of races consisting of a time trial, a road race and a criterium. 2012 marked the 20th anniversary of the VOS and saw Greg and Russell White compete in the Men’s Elite 2 category and Jeff Slayton in the Men’s Elite 4 category. ! Opening the racing February 10th with an out and back T T, the wind wa s changing throughout the day from a cross-tail on the out leg and a cross-head on the way back to a tailwind on the out leg and headwind back. This hurt the Whites a bit as they started later among the 84 starters in the Elite 2 race. Despite this, Russ finished with the 7th fastest time of the day 1:16 down on the leader and Greg was still in the hunt 7 seconds further back and tied for 10th. In the Elite 4 race, Jeff Slayton finished a respectable 30th out of 97 starters. ! ! Day 2 of racing was the circuit road race that was marred by a horrific crash in the Pro/1 causing every field to be stopped for more than 45 minutes at the start line. As a result, the Elite 2 race was shortened by a lap and one of the time bonus sprints was eliminated. Russ and Greg just wanted to survive the hilly road race and protect there GC positions. There were a few breaks with the most dangerous break getting a gap of a minute or so; but several teams worked to bring it back together hoping for a field sprint. On the next to last time up the 5 minute hill, the group slowed a bit and the rider in front of Greg swerved off the road and into the weeds causing Greg to hit a missing chunk of pavement and unclip to stay upright. A good deal of speed was lost and Greg had to work hard to close the 20-meter gap that had developed. ! I was definitely feeling timid and could have the Elite 3 category. Of the race Schaller writes, “This done a better job being a little more aggressive at was my first race of the year. I am feeling pretty holding my position. Something to work on over good strength wise but not so much endurance wise. the next couple races.” I was curious to see how I would hold up. I was able to get on a group of guys moving forward while staying sheltered from the wind. I suddenly found myself in the top 20 and not really cramping in the last km. At 200 meters to go I started to sprint and it opened up in front of me.” The criterium course changed from previous years with the new course having holes and cracks that claimed a few carbon rims throughout the day. The eight-turn circuit was unique in that there was one road with a barrier down the middle and racers going in opposite directions. In the Elite 4 race Slayton finished 24th and moved up to 22nd in the final Elite 4 GC standings. Indeed, Greg finished 6th in the Road Race with Russ coming In the Elite 2 race, there were in 39th with the same time and a few time bonuses for the finish maintaining their GC positions that could help Russ and Greg leap heading into the final stage; a 55 u p o n G C . At the bell, a Team Specialized Junior in the break attacked after turn one. He was caught and the eventual winner countered with a km to go. He held on narrowly over the charging field sprint. Greg and Russ did not lose any time finishing 16th and 38th in the criterium, respectively. In the final GC standings Russ White finished 7th and Greg White 11th, each earning 9 points toward a Category 1 upgrade. The weekend began Friday night with an inspiring talk from Scott covering a diverse array of topics including winning the Amgen Tour of California King of the Mountain title, coaching the Rwandan National Cy c l i n g Te a m , b e n e f i t s o f meditation, and Roger Maris. Saturday morning began with a hearty breakfast, after which riders set out on 1 of 2 rides along the Sonoma Coast. The “A” group took a route up King Ridge, down Meyers Grade and finally home after covering a bit over 80 miles and nearly 8,000 feet of elevation gain. VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2012 After a hot shower, a nap and a recovery drink or 2, dinner was a welcome event with the added bonus of fresh crab kindly d o n a te d b y Ja s o n E i s e r i c h’s b r o t h e r ( a l o c a l co m m e r c i a l fisherman) and cooked by Chef John Licatesi. Following dinner, Olivia, showing off her brand new S p e c i a l i z e d S H I V, t o l d h e r biography of coming to cycling “late” in life. In a relatively short time she moved from a novice racer to a competitive regional racer. However, to pursue her dream of professional cycling she decided to leave her lucrative career in the financial services industry and pursue racing full time. Her dedication has paid large dividends, including her native Ireland’s National Time Trial Championship 3 times and in 2010 both the Time Trial and Road Race Championships. The following morning was bright and sunny as the “B” group headed over to Tomales Bay and the “A” group along with Olivia started out for a climb up Sweetwater Canyon. Needless to say, during the nearly 80 mile ride with 5,000 feet of climbing, the group of aging male racers tried to impress Olivia, but it was quite clear that they were no match for her. After a quick lunch and a shower, the bikes and gear were packed and the riders hit the road, muscles tired and aching, but feeling so good. PAGE 4 DAVIS BIKE CLUB RACE TEAM VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2012 CHERRY PIE CRITERIUM, FEBRUARY 5TH The day after Knights Ferry, a contingent of DBCRT riders arrived for the Cherry Pie Criterium in Napa on a course that featured both hills and technical turns. The Juniors were particularly well represented again with 10 teammates present. Annie Darst entered her first Women’s 15-18 Junior race and placed 7th. Kyle Fiori rode a strong race to finish 9th in the Men’s 13-14 category and Alexander Freund continued his outstanding early season with a 4th place in the Men’s 17-18 race. Top honors and a Cherry Pie went to Kennedy Hill taking first place in the Women’s 10-12 category. The older DBCRT members also had a number of good showings. Ryan Odell finished 6th in the Elite 4 race earning him upgrade points that should allow him to move up to the Elite 3 category. Jeff Schaller continued his early season success coming from 10th wheel to finish 7th at the line. Contributed by Kristen Hi! KNIGHTS FERRY ROAD RACE, FEBRUARY 4TH Only 10 racers made the 2hour drive to Knights Ferry, but the results were impressive with 6 Top 6 places. The course was an out and back with four tight "turn-arounds", a bridge with RR tracks, numerous pinch flats, mild rolling hills and mild weather.
