Honoring Loved Ones
SAVE THE DATE!
The Regal Chicagoland Advisory Council suggested an event in their area where Regina alumni from
neighboring states could enjoy quality time with their Illinois counterparts. Taking their recommendation
to heart, Regina and the Catholic Community Foundation are sponsoring a Regal tailgate at Tommy
Nevin’s Pub in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday, November 3rd prior to the University of Iowa – Northwestern football game in Evanston. The tailgate will take place a couple of hours before kick-off. Gametime has not yet been set by the two universities. Invitations will be mailed and emailed to alumni once
kick-off time has been announced.
Meanwhile, please save the date on your calendar. Food, drink and good company will be provided.
There is a free shuttle which runs to/from the football stadium, picking up right in front of Tommy Nevin’s,
so curbside service will be available. Whether you wear your blue & gold, black & gold or purple & white,
you’re a winner on November 3rd!

2007 REGINA ALUMNI AWARDS
Three Regina alumni and one former St. Patrick High School graduate received Regina
alumni awards during the school’s graduation ceremonies on May 27, 2007. It was the sixth
year Regina honored and recognized its prior graduates during the farewell ceremonies for
the current senior class. A reception to honor the alumni recipients was held in the Leonard
& Margaret Pacha Nutrition Center immediately following graduation.
Ron Milder ’60 received the Regina Distinguished Alumni Award in
recognition of his thirty years of teaching service at his high school
alma mater, from which he retired in June 2007. During his tenure
at Regina, Milder taught history, film, English, reading and religion.
He is often referred to as the “Chairman of the Regina Theology Department,” for the role he has played in keeping the subject strong in the curriculum over the years. Milder
and his wife of almost thirty-eight years, Pat, have four children, who are all Regina graduates and eight
grandchildren, three of whom currently attend Regina.
ALUMNI
Michael Hanrahan ’81 was awarded the first annual Regina Alumni Appreciation Award honoring his
consistent volunteer efforts and the personal time and energies lent to further the mission and functions
of the Regina Catholic Education Center. Mike and his wife, Kirsten (Sueppel) ’81 Hanrahan, are the
parents of three children, two current Regina students and one graduate. Mike is the son of Jane Hanrahan and the late Joe Hanrahan, who had eight children in the Regina school system for twenty-six
consecutive years.
Peter Rossmann ’98 received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, awarded for the first time.
Peter graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2002, where he served as class president during
his sophomore and senior years. His junior year was spent studying abroad in London. During college
summers, he interned for Congressman Jim Leach in Washington, D.C. for two years and his junior
year he interned for Morgan Stanley Consultants (MSC) in New York City, who he joined after graduation. After working for MSC for three years, he deferred further education or corporate work during a
year’s volunteerism at the Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in inner-city Chicago. Peter is currently seeking his MBA at Northwestern University.
Frank Boyd, a 1934 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Iowa City and a prominent local businessman
for many years, received the school’s first ever Distinguished Honorary Alumni Award. The award was bestowed on Frank in recognition of the significant and on-going contributions of time, talent and treasure he
has made to Regina since its inception in the mid 1950’s; as well as accomplishments in his professional
life and leadership roles within his parish and the Iowa City area. Frank and his wife, Lucille, have two children who are Regina graduates, five grandchildren (three who are Regina graduates) and five great grandchildren.
Posing with their alumni awards are the recipients and family “stand-in” members for those unable
to personally accept. From left: Ron Milder, Bob Boyd ’63 and Diane Boyd ’74 on behalf of

THE VERY YOUNG…
(continued from page 4)
Why a Jesuit? “I had background knowledge of the Jesuits, my
mom (Patty) had worked at Creighton years ago and my brother
attended Boston College. And then I went on a retreat with a
Jesuit priest, which was the start of a long process of looking at
the Jesuits.” Michael reveals his decision makes him feel at
home with himself and his future. “I admire the Jesuits’ intellectual tradition and emphasis on social justice,” he says.
Rossmann admits it won’t be an easy road. The application
process was very thorough with the submission of a spiritual
autobiography and psychological tests. “There are two main
purposes of the novitiate stage,” he explains. “One is to learn
how to pray more deeply and one is a discernment process to
see if, in fact, this vocation is right for me.” This formation
course includes a 30-day pilgrimage, wherein the novice is
given a one-way bus ticket and a small stipend and expected to
live within a community-of-choice (not their home community)
for that one-month period without additional income from known
friends and family. They are to journal their experiences and,
ultimately, find transportation back to the novitiate.
Another six weeks will be dedicated to a hospital environment,
working with the developmentally disabled. He will also be assigned to a Jesuit community, most likely a school, for another
4-5 months. All of these experiences are to enhance the novices’ prayer and service life.
Upon completion of the two years of novitiate discernment,
Rossmann will profess his vows. From there, he plans on securing his masters in philosophy and then later one in divinity. Ultimately, he says, “I can see myself teaching in a college setting.”
Michael’s father passed away from cancer when he was two
years old. He credits his mother with greatly shaping who he
has become. “My mom played a huge role as an example of
love and service, and I witnessed, first hand, the importance of
her faith.”
He is the first Regina graduate to enter the priesthood in several
decades. “I attended Regina from kindergarten through my
senior year, so going to school there certainly gave me a great
foundation in my faith as well.”
During their spiritual exercises, novices also undergo thirty days Youth has not been wasted on this young man. God speed,
of silence except for time spent daily with their spiritual advisor. Michael Rossmann.

The Margaret & Leonard Pacha Nutrition Center was transformed into the Regina Ballroom for the May 5th Gala hosted by
Regina’s Special Events & PR Office. Marlene (Wombacher)
Frantz ’68 won the Gala’s $10,000 raffle prize. Marlene reports it is too late to give her a call for a loan, as apparently she
already found numerous places for the funds.
Waiting for their tee time before the
Romanowski/Regina VIP Golf Classic in
June are Anne & Erin Hargrave ’98. The
tournament raised $44,000 for the Regina
Booster Club. The Boosters also raised
$18,000 at the Regina Food Booth during
the Johnson Country 4-H Fair in late July.
50 YEARS OF SERVICE
Sister Agnes Giblin will celebrate 50 years as a
member of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary on Sunday, September 23rd, at the

ANNUAL APPEAL 2007 TIDBITS
The Catholic Community Foundation thanks the many donors
who made a gift to Annual Appeal 2007, helping us to reach
our goal of $250,000 and additionally receive the $500,000 in
matching 2-to-1 funds from a generous anonymous source.
The $255,000 raised in the Appeal itself will be used for:
Regina’s alumni were integral to the success of the Appeal. A
special thank you to both first-time alumni givers who
responded to “the call” and to those who faithfully support Appeal efforts every year. Here’s how the numbers looked:

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
HOW YOUR GIFTS HELP
In the past year, gifts given to the Catholic Community Foundation to benefit Catholic education have made this impact at Regina:
$500,000
That’s how much is being invested in the Regina General Endowment Fund as the result of a 2-to-1 match to the
Foundation’s 2007 Annual Appeal by an anonymous donor. The principal of the endowment is never invaded, with
5% of the interest income from the fund paid to the school on an annual basis into perpetuity. The $25,000 annual
gift will be used at the discretion of the Regina Board of Education.
10 Endowed
Scholarships
That’s how many newly endowed tuition scholarships were established in school year 2006-2007 on behalf of their
respective benefactors. The scholarships were awarded for the first time in May 2007. All scholarships are established with a minimum gift of $10,000.
$12,000
Was added to the Regina Tuition Assistance Endowment Fund to ensure families can choose a Catholic education
for their children regardless of their personal finance situation.
$11,000
Is the amount added to the Regina Teacher Endowment Fund in 2006-2007 fiscal year as a result of generous donors who advocate for and support a just and fair salary for Regina’s dedicated teaching staff.
$25,000
Applied to the tuition of Regina High School students, based on need and achievement per the Margaret E. Collins
Estate Trust Fund.
New Regina
Website
A major gift from the Iowa City Road Race Board, combined with other individual donations, made it possible for
Regina to invest in technology enhancements, including revamping their website. The highly interactive site will act
as a communication tool with current and prospective parents and students, alumni and other friends of
Regina. Please visit www.icregina.com for the latest and greatest Regina news, calendars, etc.
Regina Capital
Projects
In the spring of 2007, renovation began on the “old” (former) cafeteria and kitchen. As a result, Regina High School
has a newly enhanced fine arts wing which includes a new art room, band room and offices, and
remodeled choir room. The girl’s restroom in the hall lobby was also enlarged.
Athletic
Programs
A $10,000 major gift from the title sponsors of the Romanowski/Regina VIP Golf Classic, along with other tournament sponsors and golf funds, helped the Regina Booster Club raise approximately $43,000 for Regina
athletics.
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Legacies are created in many ways, one of which is through a family honorary or memorial scholarship to assist Regina students/families in need. To learn more about how your family can honor one of your family members into perpetuity with a Regina

CALLING ALL YEARBOOKS
In preparation for Regina’s 50th anniversary, a generous anonymous donor is
funding the production of a Regina video
to be used for awareness, recruitment
and development purposes. Throughout
the 2007-2008 school year, a videographer will be filming various Regina events
around the school and in the classrooms.
So, smile if the camera looks your way!
The Catholic Community Foundation and Regina hope to create
a Regina Yearbook Library in time for the 50th anniversary.
RHS has some years for which they don’t have a yearbook on
file and we are looking for generous alumni who would be willing to donate the “missing years” for posterity in the school’s
Yearbook Library.
These are the yearbooks needed for the library:
