HS Art Update
As we end another school year we hope many of you were able to visit the Jackson Crossing to see our student’s
amazing artwork. We had a great year and it really showed through the hard work put in by our students. We
broke last year’s record of 36 1st place ribbons by receiving 41 this year at the Alliance Art Fair. We were also
awarded with 28 2nd place ribbons and 15 3rd place ribbons. Kelsie Eaton and Jade Curl received the Special
Award Ribbons for overall body of work.
We also had three student’s artwork chosen for Ella Sharp’s Art a` Loan program. Kelsie Eaton’s Zebra, Jade
Curl’s Night Sky and Jade Stuart’s Colorful Horse will be professionally matted and exhibited September 21st
through October 17th in the Hurst Gallery at the Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History. After the exhibit the
pieces are “rented” for the year by a business in the community for public display and returned the following
year.
I am very proud of our students and their dedication to excellence. I look forward to seeing what they all have in
store for the future.
Tracy VanSickle, Art Teacher Grades 8 - 12

From The Desk Of . . .
Michigan Center Schools
Superintendent, Mr. Koziol
With the Class of 2013 graduating, it signifies the end to yet another school year and the beginning of an exciting journey for our graduates. We want to wish them luck as they embark on the next chapter and we want them to know that
they will always have a place to come home to at Michigan Center Schools.
In an effort to meet the needs of our students, our staff is working on many exciting initiatives for next school year.
These initiatives span across many different fronts to provide the best educational experience possible for all of our
students. Highlighted below are a couple of the programs/initiatives that we are most excited about heading into the
summer.
•
Cradle 2 Career (C2C)
This initiative has gained a lot of attention over the past several months. It is a countywide effort to support education.
I have lived in Jackson County for over 40 years and have not seen this kind of effort to support all of our students
countywide. At Michigan Center Schools we are working to partner with agencies and organizations from across all
of Jackson County to create a community partnership that can only be achieved when everyone works together. All of
Jackson County’s students will benefit from our community having a common vision and beliefs regarding education.
Please contact Michigan Center Schools Central Office (517.764.5778) if you are interested in getting involved in the
C2C movement. It’s not too late!
•
Energizing Education
Michigan Center Schools is poised to implement the Energizing Education Program at Arnold Elementary for the
2013-2014 school year. In coordination with the United Way and other local partners we will be providing our students
with an additional opportunity to receive support in the area of Language Arts. Identified students will be paired up
with a mentor from the community who will meet twice a week with the student for a half an hour. Our Energizing
Education Coordinator will develop a lesson plan for the mentor to follow that focuses on the areas of concern for each
student. Our students will benefit both academically and socially from this partnership between the community and
our schools.
•
“The Learning Choice” Option - TLC
In an effort to provide our high school students with more options, an “unbundled” high school approach has been
developed through a countywide commitment from all Jackson County Schools that will be coordinated by the Jackson
County ISD. TLC option will allow our students to have greater opportunities in how they receive their education
within our district and across the county. Governor Snyder has referred many times to the “anys” initiative – any time,
any place, any pace. The TLC option will provide educational alternatives outside of the traditional high school model
to best meet the needs of our students. Dual enrollment, blended learning (direct instruction combined with on-line
courses), on-line college classes, “life size classes” (students from all over the county take classes through interactive
technology), business partnerships, and other potential options will all be available to our high school students next
year to better prepare them for success upon graduation regardless of what their future may hold.
•
Instructional Technology
While Michigan Center Schools is a county leader in the integration of technology within our instruction, over the
summer and throughout the 2013-2014 school year, a concerted effort will be made to provide significant professional
development to our teachers so that more instructional technology is implemented in all of our classrooms. We are
working with Educational Technology Consultants from the Jackson County ISD to develop a Professional Development Plan that will support and encourage our teachers to continue to try new and innovative practices to engage and
challenge our students like never before.
With all of these great opportunities being worked on for next year, have a great summer and we look forward to seeing
everyone back in the fall for the beginning of what is shaping up to be an especially exciting and special school year.

Leadership
It was another successful year for Mr. Desmarais’ 3rd hour Leadership class. With 18 seniors and 12
juniors, the class was able to give back to the community more than ever before. Some of the students’ favorite
moments included their fun day at Somerset Lake Campground, helping out around the school, swimming at
the Torrent Center, packing and delivering backpacks, volunteering at the food pantry, working at the Interfaith
Shelter, and cleaning up the highway for MDOT. The class, once again, paired with Mrs. Dubois’ 4th grade
classroom through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jackson County to form meaningful mentoring relationships.
Thank you to any and everyone that helped the class be a success.

HS Band Camp
Band Camp is right around the corner, and is a class requirement for all band members continuing into high
school band. The camp is extremely important as we learn about 30-40 “formations” on the marching field,
setting all of the moves to music. Camp is equivalent to being in class for about 6 weeks, which is why it’s been
a class requirement for over 50 years! Enough history, here are the details…
Drumline members: Drumline “pre-camp” rehearsals with Mr. Bickel, Hunter Hughes, and Greg Sauceda will
be held on July 23, 24, and 25. You will practice in the auditorium from 6-8 p.m. that Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday. Drumline members, also plan that each marching-band Tuesday during school, we will have a
sectional from 2:40 to 3:45 to work on 2013 Percussion Concussion Show and marching band cleaning.
MCHS BAND CAMP 2013: July 29-August 2 (Monday through Friday).
8:15 a.m.
-Meet in HS Band room to get music and charts
-Section-Leader-led sectionals and Squad-leader-led marching sectionals.
9:00 a.m.
Step off in Parade Block/march to practice field. Rehearse on the practice field with charts,
pencils, and highlighters. (please bring your water bottles to all outdoor rehearsals; we’ll be
taking water breaks at the field)
12:00 noon Lunch (provided each day – included in camp fee)
12:45 p.m. Music rehearsal/Sectional rehearsal/Break
2:45 p.m.
Meet in parade block. Parade-block marching skills reinforced
(Water balloons may be utilized late in the week)
3:30 p.m.
March to practice field with instruments/music/pencils/charts
5:45 p.m.
Until 8:15 a.m. tomorrow in the class room, BAND DISMISSED!
The pool will be available every day after band camp until about 6:30 p.m. (as long as the schedule allows!).
Uniform fittings will occur for Seniors on Monday after camp, on Tuesday for Juniors and Sophomores, and
Freshmen on Wednesday, July 31.
There will be one more half-day of band camp just before our first home football game on August 29. We will
rehearse from 3:00-5:30 p.m., eat together, and march pregame and halftime at the football game in our camp
T-shirts and shorts.
Friday, August 2, we’ll end rehearsal at 4:30 p.m. so students can relax/go home to clean up/ prepare for our
preview performance at 6:00 p.m. at the practice field. This performance is open to all band parents, friends,
fans, and anyone else who would like to attend, so feel free to help spread the word. Immediately following the
performance will be the end-of-camp cookout/potluck by the field. Flyers will go home during camp to indicate
requested donations by each instrument section. The amazing MC Band Parents will be preparing the meat
for the cookout, so your donations will make a healthy, well-rounded meal. Communications for the cookout
should be made to Jenny Kelso – cookout chairperson (thanks Jenny!).
The cost for camp is $40 per student and includes marching gloves, our uniform beret, and our 5 provided
lunches. This price also includes the official band camp shirt, which is will be worn for our preview
performance Aug. 2 and will be worn for home games before school starts and the homecoming pep-rally tour.
Payment will be appreciated by July 29, please.
I am quite excited about the upcoming year............see Mr. Bickel for an enrollment form today!

Fourth graders in Mrs. DuBois’ class
volunteered this year to be a part of the new
Storyfest pilot program, “Kids Tell” (Stories
By Kids and For Kids). Mrs. DuBois attended
workshops and trainings to learn the art of
storytelling from a mentor storyteller, Judy
Sima, and brought her new knowledge into the
classroom as a part of the 4th grade reading
and writing curriculum. It was a huge HIT!
The students started with familiar folktales
and fables and made them into their own
works of art by adding new details and their
own “twists” and “turns”. Students then wove repetitive parts into their
stories to engage their audience.
Congratulations to 4th grader
Danielle Trajnowski who earned
Honorable Mention in Jackson’s
Young Poets Contest for her poem
titled “Lightening”. Not only was
Danielle’s work published in a
book of poetry, but she also recited
her poem in front of an auditorium
full of spectators during an awards
ceremony at Parkside Middle
School.
Following
the
ceremony,
Danielle
met
renowned poet
Once their stories were complete, the students set out to perfect their Ken
Nesbitt
storytelling by practicing (over and over!) with one another and with their and
received
preschool reading buddies. The entire class even performed a story, “The an autographed
Pesky Mosquito”, for the ENTIRE school!
copy of one of his
books! Amazing
Next, four brave students (Zach Johnson, Kaitlyn Hoover, Cadence work Danielle!
DeGroote, and Kevin Roberts) volunteered to have their storytelling
performances video recorded and published on the Jackson Storyfest
website for the Jackson community to vote for their favorite storytellers.
All four storytellers were recognized at the afternoon Storyfest Matinee
at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson as well as promoting
the “Kids Tell” program through their television debut on JTV with Bart
Hawley.
Receiving the most votes on the Storyfest website were Kaitlyn Hoover and
Kevin Roberts. These two brave storytellers performed
at the Storyfest Saturday Matinee in front of a packed
house. Congratulations to all of our storytellers!
Fourth Grade Mackinac Trip
Anticipation and excitement was felt on an early Tuesday morning as fourth
grade students and their chaperones boarded three coach busses bound for Upper
Michigan. Their three-day adventure was packed full of countless learning
opportunities which permitted the students to experience the history, traditions,
and economy of Michigan. They visited and explored the beautiful Tahquamenon
Falls, Fort Michilimackinac, Mackinac Island, and Historic Mill Creek. Our
fourth graders had a wonderful trip that was filled with fun, learning, and fond
memories to share.
This trip was made possible by the many volunteers who gave their time and
energy to help raise money for our students. The fourth grade students and teachers
would like to express their thanks to these volunteers. We couldn’t have done it
without each of you.
Bats Visit Third Grade
On May 17th, the Organization of Bat Conservation from Detroit, MI, visited
our Michigan Center Third Graders at Keicher Elementary. The Bats Around
the World presentation taught students about various species of bats, bat
myths, and the importance of bat conservation. They learned many ways that
they can help protect bats and why they are important to our ecosystems.
Students met several different live bats throughout the presentation. One of
which created a lot of excitement due to the fact that it is the biggest bat in
Michigan but didn’t appear to be. “What? No way! That can’t be the Big
Brown Bat. It’s too small,” cried Ethan Sims. Students later wrote letters
to their school PTO, principal, and superintendent thanking them for the
opportunity to learn more about bats. The presentation met various science
standards as well as gave Michigan Center students new insight on these
unique and helpful mammals.

Fun Day 2012!
Thanks to Mr. Woodhurst and all of his helpers the students had an awesome fun
day on Tuesday, June 4th. The students got to enjoy exciting activities including a
bounce house and a blow up slide. What a great day!
There’s No Fun in Kindergarten!
What, a wedding in Kindergarten? Sure
– every year in Mrs. Patrick’s room there
is a fun, festive afternoon where Mr. Q
and Miss U get married. Students learn
that in spelling q cannot be without
u. What a fun way to learn spelling
rules. And yes, there is even cake!
Happy Retirement!
We want to wish Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Stepney a happy retirement. Both have
dedicated many years to Arnold Elementary and Michigan Center Schools.
Thanks for impacting the lives of the students you have encountered.
Enjoy!
