Roger Maris and a Cast of Hundreds
by Gregory Rom - April 13
In this historical narrative, Gregory Rom describes the events
in Major League Baseball in the
years 1957 through 1968. This
was a simpler time when there
were fewer teams playing. The
American and National League
pennant pursuits seemed to unfold with more apparent drama
over the course of the summer.
In those years, the League pennant pursuits led directly to the World Series. Rom
summarizes the key games and player performances
of each World Series over the 12-year period. Rom
skillfully interweaves historical baseball details into
his narrative about the most successful players of the
era. Sponsored by Brookdale Senior Services. Register
by April 8.

Meadow Lake Park Celebration is May 16
The city of New Hope is holding a celebration
in Meadow Lake Park on Monday, May 16, from
5 to 6 p.m., to introduce residents to improvements made in the park late last summer.
The most visible park improvement is the new
playground equipment. The equipment provides
a variety of challenging and stimulating activities including spinning stations, a next-generation merry-go-round, and a variety of climbers.
The project also included pathway improvements, an equipment container with ramps and
an engineered wood fiber base for easy access.
The celebration will include a ribbon cutting by
the mayor and council members at about 5:30
p.m. and refreshments. Everyone is welcome!
Meadow Lake Park is located two blocks north
of Bass Lake Road at Yukon Avenue and Meadow
Lake Road.

Facilities
Park improvements at Northwood Park this summer
New play equipment and
trail improvements will be
made on the west side of
Boone Avenue in Northwood Park this summer.
The work is being coordinated with a storm water
project to improve the
water quality of Northwood Lake. This portion
of the park will be closed
from April 1 - October 1.
The 20-year-old playground at Northwood is
not the oldest play equipment in New Hope’s park
system, but it is very heavily used. A couple meetings
were held with interested residents from the neighborhood in fall 2015 to plan the new playground.
The playground improvements will include:
• A new play equipment container
• Engineered wood fiber to replace the existing sand
beneath the play equipment
• Resilient mats and ramps to make the playground
accessible
• A separate play area for tots and a large sand area
• An assortment of climbing, spinning and balancing
components, swings, a zip line and several slides.
Trail improvements will include a new segment to
create a loop trail and repairs to existing trail.
The estimated cost of the playground and trails
portion of the Northwood Park project is about
$340,000, which will come from New Hope’s Park
Infrastructure Fund.
Three Rivers Parks to extend Bassett Creek Trail in New Hope
The New Hope City Council and city staff have been
supportive of a plan by Three Rivers Park District to
extend the Bassett Creek Trail in 2016.
The new trail section will connect to an existing
section of the trail at 36th and Boone avenues. The
trail will travel north along the east side of Boone to
Northwood Park and continue through the park along
the north side of the ballfields to Winnetka Avenue.
After leaving the park, the trail will jog to the south
on Winnetka before continuing east, once again on
36th Avenue. After entering Crystal, the trail with
continue south on Nevada Avenue to 32nd Avenue,
then east on 32nd Avenue until it reconnects with an
existing section of trail just west of Hwy. 100.
The new, multi-use bituminous trail will be 8 to 10
feet wide and intended for use by both pedestrians
and bicyclists. Eventually the Bassett Creek regional trail be be about 7 miles long – extending from
French Regional Park in Plymouth to Theodore Wirth
44
Regional Park in Minneapolis – where it will connect
to the Grand Rounds trail system.
The new trail will be constructed, operated, and
maintained by Three Rivers Parks. For more information about Three Rivers Park District parks and trails,
visit threeriversparks.org/parks.aspx.
