Amalfi Coast Tour - Itinerary 2016
Day 1
Travelling to the Amalfi Coast via Pompeii
We meet in Rome at the central train station (Roma
Termini). From here we start our journey south toward
the Amalfi Coast. Our first visit is to the ancient ruins
of Pompeii. Here we have a guided visit, where we
see both evidences of the lifestyle of the inhabitants
of this Roman city, as well as the destruction caused
by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD.
A short drive after lunch takes us to the start of the
Amalfi Peninsula and the town of Vietri Sul Mare. This
is where the famous coloured ceramics are
produced, using the maiolica method. We visit a
manufacturer where we can see the ceramics
being produced and painted, and we can browse
the incredible array of colours and designs of their
finished product.
Following a drive along the stunning Amalfi Coast
road, with hairpin bends and amazing views in
equal measure, we reach the town of Amalfi, where
we stay for the duration of the tour.
Pompeii Ceramics in Vietri Sul Mare Our hotel is a 200 metre stroll along the waterfront to
the centre of town, making it easy to come and go
as you please.
In the evening we have a Welcome Dinner, and our
first taste of the superb cuisine of this region.

Day 2 - Spectacular Views and Spectacular Wine
We drive to a small town near Amalfi where we visit
a leading wine producer, in fact with their flagship
wine being counted among Italy's best. On the drive
up to this winery you'll be glad we have hired a
professional driver, such are the tight turns. On arrival
at the winery the views are well worth the drive, but
you also see during our vineyard visit how difficult
this land is to work, with the vines on small terraces
clinging to the steep slope.
The winery we visit is very highly regarded. It has
been pivotal in the area in the way it has taken
traditional varieties grown only in the Amalfi Coast
area, such as ginestra and fenile, and has raised the
bar in terms of quality.
We have a guided visit through the vineyards and
the winery. This is followed by a degustation lunch,
where the wines are match with dishes that
complement them. And as an added extra, the
view from the restaurant is as world class as the
wines.
Amalfi Coast Vineyards The winery cellar On our return to Amalfi we visit the Cathedral of
Sant’Andrea (St Andrew), a historic and artistic
treasure.

Tradition and quality Day 3
Positano – chic and stylish by the sea
Today we cruise by boat to Positano, famous for
elegant fashion boutiques and seaside charm. Our
boat cruise along the coast reveals a new
perspective on the area, with some incredible

houses tucked away and tiny hidden beaches.
Positano has an enviable combination of a good
beach with a broad seaside promenade, with cafes
and chic boutiques jostling for position in the pastel
coloured buildings.
We have lunch in a restaurant boasting wonderful
sea views, and spend some of the afternoon
exploring the narrow back streets lined with
bougainvillea, or just find your nearest café, put your
feet up and sample the local specialty – limoncello!
Bougainvillea shaded terrace, Positano On return to Amalfi we walk to the start of the Valley
of the Mills, inland from Amalfi, where we see the
remains of historic paper mills.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Accommodation: Hotel La Bussola, Amalfi
Day 4 - Amalfi cuisine, the secrets revealed!
By now you've enjoyed the Amalfi Coast cuisine for
a few days, so it's time to learn how it's made with a
hands-on cooking lesson.
For the cooking lesson we travel to Ravello, which
has long been a favourite destination for both
musicians and well-heeled travellers.
We start our cooking lesson by harvesting some fresh
produce from the organic vegetable garden.
Moving into the kitchen, the chef takes us through
the preparations for a full three course lunch, which
we then enjoy overlooking the terraced garden
where it was grown.
Cooking lesson, Ravello The piazza in Ravello After lunch we spend time in Ravello, which from its
vantage point high above Amalfi has spectacular
views of the rugged Amalfi Coast stretching in both
directions with the sparkling Mediterranean below.

Day 5 - Island time in Capri
Today we travel to Capri, a favoured destination for
the rich and famous in recent times, but also with an
interesting history stretching back beyond ancient
Roman times.
On Capri we take the funicular railway up to the
town centre, where top fashion boutiques jostle for
space alongside locals selling fruit and vegetables.
Capri has plenty of scope for simply browsing the
shops and enjoying the ambience. And stroll down
to the Gardens of Augustus, with views over the
Faraglioni rocks dramatically rising from the sea.
For the more active, there are several walks that
can be done. These include to the Grotto di
Matermania, where you reach an ancient place of
worship, or the path down to the Marina Piccola, a
small fishing port alongside a series of beaches.
And there is also the archaeological site of Villa
Jovis, from where the Roman emperor Tiberius ruled
and relaxed.

Day 6 - All Roads Lead to Rome
By now you know the local barista by name - and
he knows which coffee you order - but we must say
'arrivederci' to Amalfi and return to Rome.
En route we enjoy a final lunch together, having our
last chance to enjoy the views and the cuisine,
before heading north to Rome.
We reach Rome around late afternoon.

About Us
In the last few years as Italy with Pleasure we have enjoyed every moment of taking
our guests to the places that we like visiting, in the way we like showing around
places, aiming to visit many places but with a relaxed pace. In a small group you
can be dropped off close to attractions and historical centres and we do not waste
time queuing. Many of our clients say they are not ‘tour people’, but have loved
their time on our tours.
WHO WE ARE
Antonella: I've spent a decade in the travel industry,
which early on included guiding coach tours around
Italy. But I knew there was a better way for people to
see the country, and this is it! We take you to the
places that we like visiting, in small groups. We've
travelled
extensively
throughout
Italy,
and
the
itineraries that we've put together allow you to
maximise your experience of the best that Italy has to
offer.
Malcolm: I first came to Italy about 15 years ago
while working as a winemaker. With a passion for the
gastronomy and the history of Italy, leading tours
around regional areas allows me to share the best of
Italy. Having lived in Sicily, Puglia, Rome and Milan, I
have a good understanding of Italy and Italian
culture from the north to the south. And I even have
an Italian wife – Antonella!
Our promise to you – we’ll give you a better Italian tour than anyone else can
(and this is what our clients tell us that we’ve delivered).
