Ventura County Board of Supervisors
supports FOOD Share's hunger efforts
Ventura County Government center Hall of Administration was flooded with 185 orange balloons each balloon represented a food

exact, each representing a food
pantry in Ventura County that
helps distribute more than 11
million-pounds of food, FOOD
Share raises each year.
The Ventura County Board of
Supervisors recognized Septem-
ber as Hunger Action Month,
a nationwide campaign to mobilize the public to take action
to battle hunger. FOOD Share
staff, members of its Board of
Directors, volunteers, agricul-

Supervisors.
According to a 2013 Map the
Meal Gap study by Feeding
America, more than 102,000
people in Ventura County –
about 12.6 percent of the county’s total population – are food
insecure, which reflects a gap
of more than 20,000 individuals who are not turning to the
regional food bank for support.

said, “We appreciate your in-
volvement in FOOD Share and
its activities addressing hunger
awareness, advocacy and education. On behalf of the FOOD
Share team, I offer a heartfelt

cars and marvelously, dozens of
Mexican cowboys wearing Stetson
western hats riding their horses in
the last of the Wild West towns, Las
Vegas, Nevada.
How fitting it was that Mexican
cowboys rode in the parade, after
all, it was Spanish settlers and
their sons and grandson Mexicans
that invented the “cowboy” (the
Vaquero) in Mexico over two
hundred years before Americans
took to raising cattle west of the
Mississippi River.
Watching these modern vaqueros ride in the parade also brings
back history that in 1862 Colonel
Porfirio Diaz ‘ horse soldiers of the
Mexican Army routed/destroyed
beautifully plumed French Cavalry
at the Battle of Puebla on the 5th of
May, 1862, disrupting the French
invasion of Mexico.
That fight for Mexican freedom
morphed into a long dictatorship of
the aforementioned Porfirio Diaz
and the 20th Century’s first social
and political revolution that helped
change the world.
Led by a University of California educated slightly built
bespectacled Francisco Madero,
Mexicans in 1910 revolted against
the 30-year long dictatorship of
Porfirio Diaz and his government
of oligarchs otherwise known as
ossified old men.
Madero’s most loyal fighting
general was former bandit and
spectacularly charismatic Pancho
Villa in the border state of Chihuahua whose call to arms raised
an army – Division del Norte, that
showed the world Mexicans continued to be the world’s finest light
cavalry that they had demonstrated
against the French forty eight years
earlier.

German military advisors who imported barbed wire from America
and machine guns from Europe to
fight off Villa’s horse soldiers and
the famous Mexican cavalry faded
into history -- a casualty of modern
warfare.
This history-making Mexican
Revolution lasted ten years and
produced an unknown number of
dead. We do know that there was a
much smaller Mexican population
in 1920’s census than in the 1910
census. Not all missing died, so
where did the living go?
They came to the United States
as they had since 1779 when Mexicans came to fight in the American
Revolution and in 1861 when they
came to fight in the American Civil
War (on both sides). It was their
great-great grandchildren I mingled with on the parade route and
watched as they happily marched
and danced their way into Downtown Las Vegas. Also in the crowd
and in the marchers were recent
immigrants from all the countries
of Latin America.
Las Vegas is home to far more
Hispanics than I ever realized.
They come from everywhere;
they work in the gigantic hotel
and gaming industry of Las Vegas,
they work in construction every
day in 100-degree plus temperatures, they work in retail, services,
law enforcement, media, mining,
ranching, they flip burgers, run
restaurants, run tax and notary
services and seem to open new
Mexican, Salvadoran and Cuban
restaurants every week. They are
everywhere.
They teach in schools, they study
at the University of Nevada, Las
Vegas and College of Southern
Nevada, they practice law, many
are running for political office for
this November’s election and many
of them gathered in Downtown Las
Vegas to revel in and celebrate their
commonalties in the United States
of America.
Fittingly, the Grand Marshall of
the parade was Nevada’s Governor,
Brian Sandoval whose family came
to the United States from Mexico
when everyone rode horses, wore
Stetsons and tamed the Wild West.

area and set up a perimeter. A
short time later, the Sheriff's helicopter spotted Patricio walking on
Telegraph Road near Farris Drive.
Patricio was quickly taken into
custody by Sheriff's Detectives,
who had responded from the Fillmore Police Station to assist in the
search. Follow-up investigation
revealed the van had been reported
stolen to the California Highway
Patrol in Santa Barbara.
Suspect Patricio was arrested
and booked at the Pre-Trial Facility
for auto theft, evading law enforcement, resisting arrest, possession of
burglary tools, and being under the
influence of a controlled substance.
The length of the pursuit was
23.7 miles. No law enforcement
personnel were injured nor vehicles damaged. Suspect Patricio
sustained a minor laceration to his
nose and was treated at the scene.
The van sustained significant front
end damage and was towed.

En el estudio se descubrió que
el 16 por ciento de los hombres
encuestados habían probado nue-
vas drogas en Tijuana, tras su más
reciente deportación, indicó la profesora adjunta del Departamento
de Medicina de UCSD, Victoria
Ojeda. "En este caso, los usuarios que
participaron en el estudio, muchos
compartían jeringas y eso es lo que
va aumentando el riesgo", indicó
la doctora. "El cambio a ser una droga
inyectada es lo que incrementa el
riesgo para VIH", agregó. Señaló que para los deportados
que se ven obligados a vivir en
ocasiones en las calles, es muy
difícil alejarse de las drogas ya que
es mucha la disponibilidad y muy
bajo el costo, tomando en cuenta
que Tijuana es un corredor habitual
para el tráfico de sustancias. La catedrática consideró que otro
factor que afecta a los inmigrantes
que son repatriados, son las barreras que experimentan para tener
acceso a los servicios de salud. Una de ellas es la falta de la
credencial para votar, considerado
el documento oficial para trámites
en México. "Sí hay interés en servicios pero
hay varios factores que pueden reducir la posibilidad para que ellos
tengan acceso a ellos", comentó y
enfatizó que la falta de dicha credencial es el principal obstáculo. Otro factor es la carencia de
atención de salud mental, en la
que puede influir distintos factores,
desde la falta de documentos hasta
el cómo fueron tratados por las
autoridades de inmigración, policía
local o la misma comunidad. "Cuando experimentan trastornos psiquiátricos como depresión
y dependiendo de la situación eso
puede afectar como se integran
a la comunidad", mencionó la
catedrática, quien subrayó que la
salud mental tiene un gran papel en
el aislamiento de los inmigrantes. La investigadora recalcó que
para atender este tipo de problemáticas, la colaboración entre
autoridades de México y Estados
Unidos es crucial. "Siempre la comunicación entre
los dos países sobre estas pobla-
ciones que sí ocupan medicamento
para VIH, porque si no se crea
resistencia a las drogas", dijo. Como parte de este esfuerzo, en
2011 la UCSD abrió en conjunto
con la Universidad Autónoma
de Baja California (UABC) una
clínica binacional de atención
médica a inmigrantes, operada por
estudiantes de ambas instituciones
académicas y situada en la misma
zona donde se realizó el estudio. "Es un espacio para explorar
la oportunidad y para mejorar el
servicio a la población migrante",
concluyó. Por su parte, la investigadora
Kimberly Brouwer de la División
Global de Salud Pública de UCSD
coincidió en que se requieren más
campañas de salud y prevención de
VIH enfocadas únicamente en los
deportados. Para ello, exhortó a aprovechar
los servicios de reintegración de
inmigrantes, como es el caso de albergues temporales, donde podrían
recibir información médica. La catedrática, quien ha realizado estudios de salud entre
inmigrantes deportados tanto en
la frontera sur como en la frontera norte de México indicó que
muchos de ellos, cuando regresan
tienen afectaciones emocionales. "Hay muchos problemas de
salud mental en deportados, hay
muchos estigmas con lo que esto
representa, algunas veces ven el
regreso a su país de origen como
un fracaso y muchos de ellos han
estado desconectados de sus familias", finalizó.
Lo acuchillo mientras...
El sospechoso tiro en el lugar de
los hechos el desarmador y huyó a
pie dejando el Cadillac. Con la información del propietario registrado
del Cadillac, los oficiales pudieron
identificar al sospechoso como Miguel Ángel Aguilar, un residente de
23 años de edad de Oxnard .
A eso de las 11:30 pm, los alguaciles del Condado de Ventura
hicieron contacto con Aguilar en
un motel en Camarillo. Oficiales
del Departamento de Policía de
Oxnard, fueron puesto bajo aviso
y respondieron al motel y lograron
arrestar a Aguilar.
Aguilar fue trasladado a la Cárcel
del Condado y puesto bajo arresto
por el cargo de atraco con arma mortal. La investigación sigue en curso.

Arrestado por robo...

sospechoso siguió hacia el sur
de Hallock Road en Santa Paula,
donde deliberadamente se estrelló
contra la puerta de un camino
privado cerrado. El conductor y
único ocupante de la van, Enrique
Patricio, corío de la van hacia el

continuar eludiendo a la policía.
Un helicóptero del alguacil
y dos perros de la unidad K-9
respondieron a la zona. Tiempo
después el sospechoso Patricio fue
reportado por un residente donde
se escondía en la propiedad de
la cuadra 1600 de Lemonwood
Drive. Oficiales del alguacil se
trasladaron a esa zona y establecieron un perímetro. Poco tiempo
después, el helicóptero del alguacil vio al sospechoso caminar en
la calle Telegraph, cerca de Farris
Drive. Él sospechoso fue rápidamente detenido por detectives del
alguacil, que habían respondido de
la oficina de Fillmore para ayudar
en la búsqueda. La investigación
reveló que la van había sido re-
portada robada a la Patrulla de
Caminos de California en Santa
Bárbara.
Él sospechoso fue arrestado por
los cargos de robo de auto, evadir
a la policía, resistirse al arresto,
posesión de herramientas para
robar, y estar bajo la influencia de
una sustancia controlada.
La longitud de la persecución
fue de 23.7 millas. Él sospechoso
sufrió una laceración menor en la
nariz y fue atendido por los paramédicos. La van sufrió daños y
fue remolcada.
Latinos siguen enfrentando
peores condiciones laborales
Los hispanos enfrentan las peores condiciones laborales, son los peor pagados y de los que se abusa más.

Los últimos datos nacionales de
empleo siguen mostrando que los
hispanos, junto con los afroamericanos, son quienes enfrentan
peores condiciones laborales, con
bajos salarios y alto desempleo,
de acuerdo con un nuevo informe divulgado por AFL-CIO, la
principal central sindical del país.
El reporte, titulado “El Sueño
Americano escurridizo: bajos salarios, alto desempleo y un retiro
inseguro para los latinos”, ha sido
publicado con motivo del Día del
Trabajo que se celebró el lunes.
Pese a que la situación económica ha mejorado paulatinamente
tras la crisis financiera de 2008 y
el desempleo ha ido reduciéndose, quedan patentes las diferencias en función de la raza y el
origen étnico.
La tasa de desempleo general
en el país cerró julio en el 7.4 %,
según datos del Departamento de
Trabajo, aunque si se desglosa por
minorías el panorama es menos
tranquilizador.
Los estadounidenses blancos
registraron un desempleo del 6.3
%, mientras que entre la población hispana fue del 9.4 % y entre
los afroamericanos del 12.5 %, y
los cálculos de los economistas
proveen que esta tendencia se
mantenga por lo que resta del año.
Asimismo, en lo que se refiere
a los salarios, los latinos aparecen
como los trabajadores con sueldos más bajos del país.

Entre 2007 y 2012, los hispanos
vieron incrementarse sus remuneraciones el 2.8%, al pasar de
ingresar 576 dólares a la semana
a 592 dólares.
Sin embargo, la cifra sigue siendo inferior a la de los trabajadores
afroamericanos, que pasaron de
ganar 664 dólares a 665 dólares
en este periodo, y notablemente
menor a la de los trabajadores
blancos, cuyos ingresos pasaron
en estos cinco años de 873 dólares
a 879 dólares a la semana.
Por otro lado, estas difíciles
condiciones, unidas a la precariedad laboral, también provocan
que al llegar a la vejez se encuentren en una situación de mayor
vulnerabilidad financiera debido a
los gastos en salud y a los escasos
ahorros de jubilación.
El 70.1% de los latinos de 65
años de edad o mayores tienen
ingresos inferiores al doble del
umbral de la pobreza, que se
toma como nivel básico de subsistencia.
En comparación, sólo el 43.8
% de los blancos son vulnerables
económicamente, de acuerdo
con los cálculos del Instituto de
Política Económica (EPI, por sus
siglas en inglés)
“Este reporte confirma la des-
afortunada realidad que muchos
latinos y sus familias tienen que
luchar para subsistir con lo mínimo”, aseveró Ana Avendaño,
directora de inmigración y acción
comunitaria y asesora del presidente de la AFL-CIO.
“Los latinos trabajan duro todos los días para construir esta
nación. Hagamos honor al Día del
Trabajo apoyando políticas que
ayudarán a los latinos a obtener
un mejor nivel de vida en este
país”, dijo.
Como recomendaciones, la
AFL-CIO insta al Gobierno a
tomar medidas para solucionar
estas diferencias laborales entre
razas, y señala, entre ellas, el
impulso de grandes proyectos de
infraestructura pública y la subida
del salario mínimo federal de los
actuales 7.25 dólares por hora a
10.50 dólares.
La población latina ha superado
ya los 50 millones de personas y
representa más del 16 % del total
de 310 millones en el país.

quienes desfilaron mostrando a
las participantes del concurso a
reina de la Federación de Clubes Zacatecanos del Condado
de Ventura, de Michoacán, de
este estado, el club de oriundos
de Copándaro llevó un carro
alegórico que fue muy gustado
por los asistentes al desfile.
Organizaciones comunitarias, como La Hermandad y el
Proyecto Mixteco también se
unieron a la marcha. Escuelas
de Zumba, de artes marciales no
faltaron entre los participantes.
Por último, y en un acierto
de los organizadores, desfilaron las asociaciones de charros
de la región y por eso,no deja
de ser digno de admirarse la
destreza y talento de muchos
de los equinos y los jinetes que
los montan.
La onda de calor que se ha
dejado sentir en los últimos
días en buena parte del sur de
California, no impidió que miles de personas, la mayoría de
origen mexicano se dieran cita
a lo largo de la calle C, desde la
calle novena hasta la segunda,
para presenciar el tradicional
desfile e inundaran el centro de
la ciudad con los colores verde,
blanco y rojo, ondearan banderas mexicanas, se pintaran la
cara con los colores de la patria
azteca y sintieran el orgullo de
ser mexicanos. Puntual fue el
inicio, y puntual fue también la
finalización, dos horas después
a la una de la tarde, terminó el
desfile pero la fiesta no paró
allí ya que se prolongó en la
explanada del parque de La
Placita hasta las primeras horas
de la noche.
El lunes 15 de septiembre
como es costumbre en el mismo
lugar se llevo a cabo el tradicional Grito de Independencia, el
cual fue encabezado por la Lic.
