HUNGERING FOR
PEACE
We journey with
CRS Rice Bowl to Lebanon to be
present to a people who themselves
are on a journey. Here we meet a
family of Syrian refugees, a family
perhaps not so unlike our own. We
are challenged through our
almsgiving this week to reach out to
those who are forced to flee their
homes, who are seeking shelter in a
land of peace.

N O T E S
F ROM THE P ASTOR
This Sunday marks the mid-point of Lent and is therefore called
“Laetare Sunday,” laetare being the Latin word meaning “to
rejoice.” I rejoice in particular at all of the Lenten initiatives for our growth in
love of the Lord and each other taking place in these days.
Our Lenten speaker series has been a great success and also an
excellent preparation for our Parish Reconciliation Service this coming
Wednesday, March 18 at 7PM in church. So many times we associate faith
with other people speaking to us; in the Sacrament of Confession, however,
Christ invites us to speak to Him in our own words of our need of conversion
from sin for the deepening of our belief in the Gospel.
We receive the gift of the Lord’s mercy in the apostolic form in which
He wishes to give it, through the absolution given in the binding and loosing
power of the “keys of the Kingdom,” against which the “powers of hell shall
not prevail.” There is strength in numbers, so be assured of the presence of
many Priests from area parishes to assist individual confessions on
Wednesday.
If you are not able to make it to Confession on Wednesday, St. Jude
Parish is having their Reconciliation service this Thursday, March 19 at 7PM.
All of the St. Vincent’s Priests will be there.
Please also keep in your prayers the women who are making the
Christ Renews His Parish retreat this weekend, and for the middle school boys
who will be on the Edge retreat next Saturday.
Finally, in order to observe this Laetare Sunday more deeply and well,
I recall to your attention the medieval Catholic practice known as
“midlenting.” According to the Oxford English Dictionary, midlenting refers to
“the custom of visiting parents on the fourth Sunday of Lent and giving them
presents.” So, children of all ages, if you are looking for the perfect
“penance” to grow in holiness and to shock and awe those who brought you
into this world, go get yourselves midlenting today!
In St. Vincent’s love of Christ,
Fr. Daniel Scheidt
ANNUAL CHRISM MASS
The annual Chrism Mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception in Fort Wayne, on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 pm.
Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades has invited all priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay
people of the diocese to attend. An interpreter will be present for those who are
hearing impaired or deaf.
At the Chrism Mass, the Holy Chrism is consecrated and the oil of catechumens
and oil of the sick are blessed. This beautiful Mass manifests the communion of the
priests with their bishop in the same priesthood and ministry of Christ.
1ST, 2ND & 3RD SCRUTINIES (ELECT)
In order to inspire the elect a desire for purification and redemption by Christ, three
scrutinies are celebrated. By this means, first of all, the elect are instructed gradually
about the mystery of sin, from which the whole world and every person longs to be
delivered and thus saved from its present and future consequences. Second, their
spirit is filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is the living water (gospel of the
Samaritan woman in the first scrutiny), the light of the world (gospel of the man born
blind in the second scrutiny), the resurrection and the life (gospel of Lazarus in the
third scrutiny). From the first to the final scrutiny the elect should progress in their
perception of sin and their desire for salvation.

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASSES
Attendance at two Baptismal Preparation Sessions
is required before your child is baptized — Session I
and Session II. You may attend Session II before
Session I, if necessary. Each session will begin at
7:00 pm. It is recommended that both parents
attend before the birth of your child so that there will be no delay
in setting a date for the baptism once the baby is born.
Godparents, too, are welcome. At least one parent and one
godparent must be practicing Catholics. Also, parents must be
registered in the Parish. Please call the church office to sign up
for your sessions.
Session I (Parish Library) - April 9
Session II (Church Conference Room) - March 26, April 16
HARVEST HOUSE—WHAT IS IT?
It is NOT a house. It is a movement for persons 55 years
and older. Here at St. Vincent’s, it is a small group of
people, both men and women. We meet once a month in
the Spiritual Center. Maybe we are a small group because
many don’t know about us. That means you don’t know
what you are missing!
We don’t want it to be a small group, so please come
Monday, March 16 at 1:15 pm (in the Spiritual Center) and
check us out! We will have snacks, socialize, play cards,
board games and other fun games and plan next year’s
activities. No reservations needed. Just come and bring a
snack to share.
For more information or questions, call Margaret at
482-2085. If school closes—there will be no meeting.
EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINES
Due to the early deadline for bulletin submission to LPi,
articles for the Sunday, March 29 bulletin must be
submitted no later than Friday, March 20 and articles
for the Sunday, April 5 bulletin must be submitted no
later than Thursday, March 26.
THANK YOU!!
A big THANK YOU from the Vocations Committee to
everyone who brought in special gifts of food, snacks and
gift cards for our seminarians. They are overwhelmed by
your generosity, and will be praying for you over these
next months!
REKINDLE THE FIRE
Meeting this Sunday, March 15, 7:00 pm in the Parish

great Leaders, Friends, Husbands, Fathers and Sons - - the Men God calls us to be. This will be done with
Catechesis, Scripture Reflection, Man Time, Faith Share,

LENTEN MASS & BREAKFAST
Every Lent, we joyfully rely less on sleep and more on Christ as
we go to the 6:30 am Mass every Tuesday during Lent. If
there’s a 2-hour delay, we’ll go to the 8:00 am Mass. We then
head over to the Life Center to eat some delicious breakfast to
help us get through the day. Bring your parents too if you need
a ride!! And if anyone would be able to help us out by making
a hot dish like a casserole or biscuits & gravy or any other
dish, please talk to Sarah - we’d be ever so grateful! Thanks!!
LIFE NIGHT
Who are you and who do you want to be like at the heart of
any discussion about drug or alcohol use/abuse. Join us to
learn more about the dangers of an ever-increasing trend of
abusing prescription medications - it just might safe a life.

Our Spring Retreat, Into the Deep, is now full. Please continue
to turn in forms so that you can be placed on the waiting list.
Last retreat spots did open up, but not until very close to the

please notify Sarah as soon as possible so that the next
person on the waiting list can be notified. Thanks!
INTO THE DEEP PRELUDE
Prelude is where we make all the Palancas and decorations
for the retreat. We meet every Tuesday & Thursday from
7-9 @ the Life Center, so just stop by anytime you have a free
moment. We’d love to say hi.

everyone is able to attend the Parish Penance Service. The
following Wednesday, we will be joining the Parish to watch a
movie in the Life Center to further our Lenten devotions.

YOU CAN LEND A HAND—A SUCCESS!
Students and staff celebrate another
successful Burger King fundraiser this year.
We thank Quality Dining and our own
Deacon Jim Fitzpatrick for the opportunity to
raise money for special projects in our school.
We are also grateful to parents and parishioners who
bought the coupon books for Burger King and Chilis.
Four parents were instrumental in organizing coupon
book sales that began during Catholic Schools week.
Mrs. Cindy Dimberio, Mrs. Catherine Murphy,
Mrs. Hieu Nguyen and Mrs. Sherry Puglise kept count of
books sold and gathered the money. We owe them a
special word of thanks for their hard work.
One of the special events that takes place during the
Burger King fundraiser is a “You Can Lend a Hand”
Komets Hocky game where one of our eighth graders
from our school, Mackenzie Wilhelm, was chosen to join
10 other middle school students from the Fort Wayne
area in singing the National Anthem at the beginning of
the game. Another eighth grader, Mary Simcox, lent her
vocal abilities to the radio announcements played on
local stations.
Final tallies are not complete, but if we met the goal of
$10,000, it means Principal Sandra Guffey and Assistant
Principal Elizabeth
Kleber will be
standing on the
school roof this
spring tossing candy
to the students. Let’s
hope it’s a warm and
sunny day.
REGISTRATION FOR ST. VINCENT SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS
Registration is open for spring sports on the
St. Vincent School website. This includes boys and girls
soccer, girls softball, boys and girls track and golf. Please
go to the website and register early to avoid a late fee.
Also, coaches are still needed for some teams. Please
contact Terry Coonan (437-9390) with any questions.
FAMILY SERVICE DAY—MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
On Saturday, May 2, volunteers from our St. Vincent
community will participate in Family Service Day. These
teams will go to home sites to help with various projects leaf raking, window washing, garden prep, flower planting,
etc. If you or someone you know could use some help
around the house, please contact Molly Schreck at
484-5303 or [email protected]. If you would like to
volunteer to help with a project, please contact
Jenny Schuhmacher at 402-1155 or
[email protected]. Please see the school's website
for more information and to download registration forms.
What a wonderful way to be the hands and feet of Christ to
others in our community. Thank you!

YOU DID IT FOR ME
Life in Niger is ruled by the seasons
--and the hungry season means food
supplies run out and prices rise. Now
Bonbatu, a Catholic Relief Services
project, hires farmers like Habibou Alassane to dig
reservoirs: generating income and water.
Bonbatu means “I become stronger.” Habibou’s family
is stronger. And the community's fields are ready for the
planting season.
PASTORAL TEXTS THROUGH LENT
Would you like to receive a daily text message during

EYEGLASS COLLECTION
During Lent, donate your old eyeglasses, including
sunglasses, to the Lions Club (basket in the WEST church

distributed free to those in need.
BEREAVEMENT GROUP
In a time of loss, it is important to know that there is a
place where you can be with others who understand your
pain. This is a time when being with others who have
walked their own path of grief may be of comfort and
offer solace in a way that your family and friends cannot
give.
St. Vincent’s Bereavement Ministry is holding support
group sessions which will meet for seven weeks. We will
begin the group on Tuesday, April 7 and continue each
Tuesday until May 19. All meetings will be held from
6:30—8:30 pm in the Parish Library.
It is our hope to provide a comforting atmosphere in
which to share the grief and bereavement process and
to offer emotional support. Your loss need not be recent
for the sessions to be helpful.

RECONCILIATION
PARISH RECONCILIATION SERVICE—NEW PROCEDURE
Having received very helpful input from parishioners
attending previous Reconciliation services, our parish
staff has formulated a proposal for facilitating the
flow of penitents at the liturgy this coming
Wednesday. Below is a map of where the various
Priests will be stationed. With the assistance of
ushers, you can sit in whichever section allows you to
go to the Priest of your choosing. You can also
remain seated in the pews while you wait rather than
standing the whole time (and thus be able prayerfully
to face the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar) until the
usher calls your row to move forward in the
confessional line---beginning from the back pews and
moving forward. Special provision will be made near
the Confessionals for the elderly and those with
disabilities. These improvements are a work in
progress, so thank you in advance for your patience
and cooperation with this new “love your neighbor”
plan!
Fr. Dan
MARCH 19—SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH,
SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
“How does Joseph exercise his role as protector?
Discreetly, humbly and silently, but with an unfailing
presence and utter fidelity, even when he finds it hard to
understand. From the time of his betrothal to Mary until
the finding of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple of
Jerusalem, he is there at every moment with loving
care. As the spouse of Mary, he is at her side in good
times and bad…
The vocation of being a “protector”, however, is not
just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a
prior dimension which is simply human, involving
everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of
the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as
St. Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting
each of God’s creatures and respecting the environment
in which we live. It means protecting people, showing
loving concern for each and every person, especially
children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last
we think about. It means caring for one another in our
families: husbands and wives first protect one another,
and then, as parents, they care for their children, and
children themselves, in time, protect their parents. It
means building sincere friendships in which we protect
one another in trust, respect, and goodness. In the end,
everything has been entrusted to our protection, and all
of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God’s gifts!”
