Fall Prevention Awareness
Did you know that September 22 marks
National Fall Prevention Awareness Day?
The day was appropriately chosen to coincide
with the first day of Fall (get it?)!
From the national level down to the local
level, officials, healthcare workers and senior
centers are doing everything we can to
promote the importance of fall prevention.
Falls are one of the leading causes of illness
and serious injury among the older adult
population, resulting in millions of dollars in
loss annually. The good news is that falls are
not a normal part of the aging process! In
fact, much can be done to prevent falls,
including:
1. Exercise regularly! To get started, you can
participate in a one-mile walk with CPA, on
Friday, September 23 in honor of Fall
Prevention Awareness Day. See page 5
(10 Million Steps) for info.
2. See your doctor regularly and make sure
you discuss any changes with him/her.
3. Eat well every day to stay healthy and keep
bones strong.
4. Reduce environmental hazards to prevent
falls in your home. Residents of the CPA
communities are eligible for a free home
environmental assessment or (for those
who qualify), free installation of a shower or
bath grab bar and more.
5. Last but not least, the CPA Chili Cook-Off
is a fundraiser for our Safe at Home
Program! Please join us on Saturday,
November 5 in support of this program, and
help us reduce falls! See page 12 for info.
Ladies attending a recent Café Lunch event at South Euclid
Community Center enjoy laughter and friendship as well as a
terrific lunch and entertainment! More fun is to be had at the
September Café Lunch, which brings entertainment by local
Irish/Folk Band, “No Strangers Here” on Thursday,
September 22, also at South Euclid Community Center. The
September luncheon will mark “half-way” to St. Patty’s Day
with an entrée of Shepherd’s Pie, specially prepared by CPA
Chef Warren and volunteers! See page 4 for reservation info.

News from the Community Partnership on Aging
Executive Director, Stacey O’Brien
This is the final push for those of you in possession of Senior Farmers’ Market
Nutrition Program coupons to USE YOUR COUPONS!!! Many of the markets
close in September so please be sure to spend every last coupon before your
favorite markets close. All coupons will expire on October 31.
Thanks so much to those of you who contributed to our Summer of Giving program
using the envelope included in the August newsletter. Your contributions make a big
difference in the lives of the older adults we serve.
You’ll see us in and around your communities in the coming weeks as we participate in several events.
We were happy to be present at the South Euclid Open House on Saturday, August 13 and at the
Mayfield Village Senior Fair on August 26. Upcoming events include:
▪ Mayfield Heights Council Coffee—Saturday, September 17 at Ross DeJohn Community Center
▪ Lyndhurst Council Coffee—Saturday, October 1 at Lyndhurst Community Center
Stop in and see us!
Every fall we welcome students from area schools who use our agency as their internship
location. This year, you’ll see Sonia and Caitlin around. They are both full time, first year Masters
social work students at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Another new face we
welcomed in August is Bridget, who will be actively working on the CARE Innovation Project, on which
we have partnered with Cleveland Heights, Maple Heights and Solon.
Believe it or not, Medicare Open Enrollment will be here next month! From October 15– December 7,
you can change your Medicare plan and/or your prescription drug plan. Plan details and your health
conditions change year to year, so an annual review is important. Our OSHIIP certified counselors and
other outreach staff are standing by to help you understand what options are available to you! Call us
at 440-442-2628.

CPA Social Work and Outreach Services
Are you a caregiver? Older friends and relatives often rely on family members,
friends and neighbors for support with home maintenance, household tasks and
support with decision making. We recognize that there are many “informal”
caregivers out there who volunteer their time and energy to help someone live
independently, sometimes at risk to their own well-being. If you’re interested in issues related to
caregiving, take a look at the AARP 2015 Report on Caregiving in the U.S. available at this URL:
www.aarp.org/ppi/info-2015/caregiving-in-the-united-states-2015.html.
If there are ways that CPA can support you through education, planning for care needs, program
support or emotional support, please give us a call.
