Tahiti Heiva in Japan
2015 Event Report
Tahiti Heiva in Japan, Japan’ s very first
full-fledged Tahitian event began in 2005. This
year once again, this passion-filled competition
was brought to the three cities of Tokyo, Osaka,
and Fukuoka.
At the Tokyo event, the foremost contest for
solo competition was inaugurated, “ Ori Tahiti
Japan Championship.” This was a competition
amongst the select group of dancers who
placed in the past two years, and the
excitement in the hall reached a crescendo.
We will look back on the year 2015, to the heiva
in each of the three cities, the Iaorana Tahiti live
tours by Tahitian artists, as well as the
workshops held.

Highlights
1. The largest scale competition in Japan with discerning judging.
This Tahitian dance competition boasts the greatest number of
participants in Japan. This year the number of those who took part
was the greatest in the history of the event, and over the two days, the
hall was highly aroused.
The judging was carried out by a panel of judges invited from Tahiti
and each ranking was decided after careful consideration. For the
judging of the groups, with the request of the judges, for each
category time was set aside for discussion, and the judges had
heated debates.
The winners of each category received a trophy and certificate as well
as a supplementary prize such as black pearl jewelry or a shell medal;
second- and third-place winners were awarded a certificate as well as
a supplementary prize. The grand prize winner received a round trip
airfare to Tahiti.
The group competition winners received a trophy and certificate and
for the best performance, awarded was a round trip airfare to Tahiti.

2. The beautiful and heated competion by the
select dancers, “ Ori Tahiti Dance Championship” .
“ Ori Tahiti Japan Championship” is the most illustrious solo
competition which is limited to the soloists who were awarded from
1st to 3rd place in the past two years at the competition in the three
cities put on by Tahiti Heiva in Japan.
In 2015 the first competition was held, and from amongst about 80
eligible participants, 65 competed.
They vied by performing mehura and otea, and this year’ s
champion was Marina Kubo, who shined.
3. Mini stage and MATAreva photo gallery in the lobby.
Once again this year, a special stage was set up and the crowd
was entertained by mini performances done by Sabrina and Tahiti
Toa. Also, with the collaboration of MATAreva, photographs of
heiva from the homeland of Tahiti were exhibited on large panels.
The feel of these heiva was conveyed by the energetic images
which decorated the hall.
4. Shopping
In the lobby there were booths with
clothing and accessories from the
homeland of Tahiti, lined next to
booths of Japanese shops and
beverages.

5. SNS (Facebook) utilization
This year as a trial activity, during the event, we went
around accompanied by Sabrina to the stage,
dressing rooms, lobby, and so forth and took
coverage, and we uploaded these scenes as they
were recorded. The popular posts reached over
20,000 people, and they gave a real feeling of the
awesomeness of the event.
