A Note from the President
Supportive and
Empowering Groups
“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we
aren’t really living.”
— Gail Sheehy, author of Passages.
Set Goals and Accomplish Them Together
With Professional Coaches
What does it mean to really live? In my life, it means
being flexible and welcoming to change. If there’s a door,
I pull it open and see what new adventure awaits me.
Granted, I might feel goose bumps as I wonder about what’s coming, but
we all know change is worth it. As author Gail Sheehy says, we cannot
grow without change. With new experiences, we start really living.
Getting It Together: Creating a Financially
Organized Life
As you know Women’s Exchange is all about learning, growing, and
sharing. While we keep our core signature programs, we invite new
programming that is enlivening our offerings. For example, Dr. Elizabeth
Kelly of DePaul University recently hosted a Friday Salon on women
who have changed the face of foreign policy as U.S. Secretaries of State:
Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice, and Hillary Clinton. Through
the generosity of The Book Stall, we’ve been able to jointly host well-loved
and respected authors like Anne Lamott and Eben Alexander. In March,
you can take a Journey Back to Self with Joan Anderson. So we invite you
to welcome change and experience growing at Women’s Exchange. That’s
the path to real living.
Anne Wieboldt and Carol Korhumel continue to facilitate a financial
“wisdom circle” in which participants identify, discuss and support
one another to navigate through financial options. Topics include:
Retirement Income, Using debt wisely, Protecting wealth with
Insurance, Planning for end of life: Ethical Wills.

serious problem, Margie Heisler, founder of An Organized Student,

organizational strategies designed to demonstrate and teach parents
the skills to help their child achieve future success.

The Artist’s Way
‘Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious
suffering”, says Tara Brach at the beginning of this illuminating book.
Suffering emerges in self-judgments and conflicts in relationships,
addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork. Harriet
Porter, LCSW, facilitates as Dr. Brach leads us to trust our innate
goodness, and develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion.
For 1st class read: Forward, Prologue and Chapter 1.

“Now What?” The Career Workshop
Dee Kane helps you find a career that matches you! Through a series of
assessments, you will develop a succinct self-inventory. This includes:
Who you are, What you have to offer, Where you would fit in, and Why.
Once you have your self-inventory, you compare your capabilities with
careers that value your cadre of talents. Then you assess how to bridge
the gap between where you are and what you want to do.
4 Tuesday evenings, April 15 to May 6, 7 to 9 pm. $150
This four-part course with Beth Kelly, Professor from DePaul
University looks at the history of the struggle for women’s rights in the
U.S., beginning with Abigail Adams’ plea to her husband to “Remember
the Ladies” at the Continental Congress in 1776, moving through the
battle for suffrage and continuing through to issues of equal pay and
reproductive rights. We will also explore the dangers of complacency
that may allow for a “rolling back” of hard won rights and progress if
women’s history remains untold. Finally, we will examine the cyclical
nature of activism for women’s equality and analyze the 1940s film,
“Woman of the Year,” as an example from popular culture of how
these cycles played out in the 20th Century. Brief readings providing
background information will be provided prior to each class session.

importance of high-quality early childhood education. Yet, one

higher-income families as they are for low-income children. Diane
Schanzenbach, research professor at Northwestern University will
describe the research and discuss what it means for our children. This
event is in collaboration with The Alliance for Early Childhood.

Progress Happens Here
This slide lecture with artist, Anne Gaines, shares the story of
designing and creating a large collaborative mural and mosaic for

Downsizing offers a chance to rethink all sorts of nifty questions. What
does my space say about me? What does my stuff say about me? Is
that what I want to say? Sociologists have pondered such questions, of
course. Their findings are great fun. It’s never too late to say what you
want--and feel at home in your own space. Cate Wallace joins us again
to share her thoughts and author’s: Sam Gosling’s, Snoop: What Your
Stuff Says about You and Winifred Gallagher’s, House Thinking: A Room
by Room Look at How We Live.
Friday, January 17, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
Unforgivable Curse
Are there events or wounds legitimately too deep to be forgiven? They
dwell within us like an “unforgiveable curse” cast in our lives. In this salon,
Sue Baugh will explore what it means to bear this kind of knowledge and
what it can offer us. Usually people talk about forgiving, about being a
“light in the darkness,” but in this salon, we look compassionately at the
darkness and what it knows.
Friday, February 21, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
From Role to Soul: Ten Shifts on the Awakening
Journey
Begin your new year with author Annie Burnside, as she tells us about
the missing piece (PEACE) in our world today that few desire to look
at head-on. This missing piece is not a religious piece, a political piece,
an educational piece or an economic piece. It’s a consciousness piece—a
spiritual piece. There is no greater contribution that we can make to the
human race than our own awakening. Join in the conversation to learn
the 10 Shifts on this journey.
Friday, January 24, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
“A Jury of Her Peers?”
Join Connie Garner when she presents “Trifles”, a one-act play published
in 1917, when women were not allowed to vote or sit on juries. Here, a
woman finds herself ‘judged by her peers’ when suspected of murdering
her husband. This riveting play written by Susan Glaspell will be read in
parts by the audience. A lively discussion promises to follow!
Friday, April 11, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
The Kennedy Women: Wives and Sisters
This talk with Beth Kelly, professor from DePaul University, explores
the complicated lives and legacies of the women who lived in the
shadow of the men; Jack, Robert, and Teddy Kennedy—who made a
lasting impact on U.S. politics. The three brothers inherited a tradition
of womanizing and a belief that ordinary rules didn’t apply to Kennedy
men, while at the same time seeking and serving in high political office
in the U.S. We will look at the fascinating stories of how this affected
the lives and legacies of the “Kennedy Wives” – Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis, Ethel Skakel Kennedy, and Joan Bennett.
Friday: February 7, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
Supercharged Change Strategies
Change is not just a 3 step process; there are strategies, behaviors,
beliefs, patterns, and risks that impact your ability to change. Once
you learn what these are, you will have the keys to unlock the change
you desire in your life. Dee Kane presents the best of Tony Robbins’
seminar: “Unleash the Power Within”.
Friday, May 16, 4 to 5:30 pm. $20
In Sex After Iris Krasnow takes readers through the perils of hooking up in their twenties to the dating landscape that widows face
in senior communities, and everything in between. No subject is off-limits as she discusses how intimacy evolves after college, the

to all the questions we’re all curious about but too timid to ask.

Join us at Women’s Exchange in coordination of The Book Stall when together we host Alice Hoffman. Hoffman, will discuss her
newest release, The Dovekeepers and how the lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate
days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them,
and whom they love.
