Mr. Bloomfield has been elected chairman and chief executive officer of the

Mr. George, who has been with the

since 1947,
moved to Houston from Lawton, Oklahoma in 1926. He graduated from San
Jacinto High School and the Rice University and has been engaged in shipping and worht trade in the ~:est Gulf
area for nearly 30 years.
He is currently serving Iris second
term as president of the Houston Maritime Association, and is a director of
the Houston Chamber of Commerce, the
Houston Cotton Exchange,
and the
Houston World Trade Association.

George is a past president of the Propeller Club and a former chairman of
the World Trade Committee of the

has purchased the trade name of Ship Channel Compress Warehouse from the Sprunt Corporation
and is now operating
the facilities
at the foot of 82nd Street as Petco Docks. Approximately $100,000 has been spent
on repairs to the two berths and other facilities.

the M. V. MEDIA, first

four freighters
to be constructed

$12.5 million shipbuilding
program. The

cubic feet of refrigerated
space. All of
the ships will be equipped with special
features
for fast cargo handling.

The newest vessel to join the Lykes fleet is the S. S. MAYO
LYKES, which was christened
in mid-August by Mrs. Hazel
Casey, wife of Congressman Bob Casey of Houston. Standing at
the bow of the ship before the ceremony are, from the left,
Congressman Casey, Mrs. James M. Lykes, Jr., Mrs. Hazel
Casey and James M. Lykes, Jr., vice president of Lykes. The
photo below shows the big ship on the ways at Bethlehem Steel
Company’s Sparrows Point Shipyard. Tbis is the second MAYO
LYKES, both of which were named in memory of Dick Mayo
Lykes, a U. S. Navy ensign killed in action in World War I|.
He was the son of one of the seven Lykes brothers
who
founded the steamship cmnpany. The ship, which cost $10
million is 495 feet long, with a 69-foot beam.
