A Word from Our Pastor

My dear family in Christ,
I recently saw a news item on television where the owner of
the food chain, Trader Joe’s, was setting up stores among
the poor in a couple of cities. I heard him say “there is so
much food wasted that could be offered to
people at a price they can afford, especially fruits and
vegetables.” Hunger is an issue, even in our country.
Rather than eating what is healthy, many people consume
what they are used to, or can afford. Few people grow their
own food anymore for various reasons—they don’t have
access to land, don’t know how, or don’t bother to take the
time.
Hunger exists in many parts of our world where
people are undernourished, starve, and die. When I was in
Colombia, I lived among people who were undernourished
which caused me to reflect on the challenges of providing
adequate food with limited resources. It became clear to
me that the reality of hunger was able to be addressed
in concrete terms. Hunger was before us and was part of
our mission effort. However, when I returned to the
Archdiocese of Denver, I began to realize that physical
hunger is much easier to address and overcome than the
hunger I observed all around me—the hunger for the
meaning in life.
There is food, and we at St. John’s have a great
service for people through our food bank. There are many
individuals who are dedicated to meet the physiological
needs of those who need nourishment.
How is the hunger for meaning identified and
named? That is a much more intricate reality. Finding
meaning in life is much more subjective. I might have a
full stomach and my physical needs are met, but to clarify
the meaning of life is one that requires honesty, trust, and
faith.
Where do I look for purpose and direction? Have I
turned to drugs, power, pleasure, or God? Depending on
where we turn, different experiences will help or
complicate the issue.
We are invited to turn to God as revealed to us in
the person of Jesus and entrusted by the Holy Spirit to the
Church. We need to see with faith and trust the action of
God to help accept that Jesus is the “Way, the Truth and
the Life” (John 14.6).
“And these words which I command you this day
shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them
diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you
sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when
you lie down and when you rise. And you shall bind them
as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets
between your eyes. And you shall write them on your
doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy
6:6-9).
The family is the child’s first experience of a faith
community and, as such, deserves careful attention in all
catechetical endeavors. Therefore, throughout the process,
parents of our students are expected to be involved for
various rites, prayer days, and retreats. Typically, students
ages 8-12 enter RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for
Children), and those ages 13-17 enter RCIT (Rite of
Christian Initiation for Teens).
Class size is limited due to the needs of our
students. Our registration fee is $75 per child or $140 per

St. John’s Food Bank
and Outreach

I believe this may be the first time I have devoted
my column to a recently deceased member of our
community and longtime St. John’s parishioner. Jean’s
family has given me permission to write about her because
this special woman held a dear place in my heart.
Even though she was surrounded by a very large
and loving family, she did not like to impose on family for
her immediate needs. Anyone who knew Jean could tell
you she was a very independent lady, but when mobility
became an issue for her, a request for food assistance came
to us. We were happy to be able to help such an
appreciative lady who was always so sweet and sociable.
Every food bank driver who ever delivered a box to her fell
in love, and I somehow felt that the visit from the food
bank driver was as important for her as the food she
received.
Jean attended the 8:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday
and usually sat only a few pews away from me. She was
usually accompanied by one or more of her sons. When
Mass would end she would always walk toward my pew
and express her thanks for all that our food bank did for
her—as well as our Longmont community.
So goodbye Jean. You will be missed by many.
You had a long, interesting life, and I am sure that you are
peacefully resting in the Father’s arms.
Sale Times
The St. John the Baptist annual Parish Tent Sale,
sponsored by the St. John the Baptist Knights of Columbus
Council 14898, will be held Thursday, August 13th and
Friday, August 14th, with sales from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
and Saturday, August 15th, with sales from 8:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m.
Donations
August 12th is our set-up and drop-off day. We humbly
ask parishioners to donate clean baby, child, and adult
clothing and shoes. We especially need adult jeans,
T-shirts, shirts, sneakers and work boots, sweatshirts,
jackets, and winter coats. We will also accept small
kitchen and household appliances, small furniture, tools,
toys, bicycles, outdoor gear, small electronic devices,
costume jewelry, bedding, and other household items,
etc. Items must be clean and in working order.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept large stuffed furniture
(couches, hide-a-beds, easy chairs, etc.—unless in
like-new condition), mattresses, computers and their
peripherals, or televisions. Please drop off your items at
the tent in the St. John’s parking lot on Wednesday, August
12th from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. or during the tent sale on
Thursday or Friday. Please do not bring donations on
Saturday.
Proceeds will support Knights of Columbus
activities in the parish community and parish ministries.

God’s Work
We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job
to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are
workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are
more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the
work of God?
We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work
of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or
priests, missionaries, or charity workers, engaged full-time
in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But
everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for
others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in
the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always
see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of
God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do
what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?”
“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he
sent” (John 6:29).

Today’s Gospel
It had been barely twenty-four hours since the miracle of the loaves and fishes; thousands had found nourishment. Jesus
and his disciples had crossed the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, and still many in the crowd from the day before found Him,
wanting another miracle. But Jesus offered them and us a greater miracle: if we are only to believe in the Son of God, we
will never hunger again. Our faith is our work, and this work will be generously rewarded.
In the Lord's Prayer we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Fully understanding today’s Gospel reading from
John enables us to comprehend the dual meaning of this petition: our bodies hunger—please provide nourishment. Our
souls hunger—through our faith, please provide the bread of life that is faith in Jesus Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church teaches us that “the drama of hunger in the world calls Christians who pray sincerely to exercise responsibility
toward their brethren, both in their personal behavior and in their solidarity with the human family” (CCC 2831).

Seguimos reflexionando sobre la nueva evangelización que comenzamos hace dos semanas. En
efecto, una verdadera evangelización va unida a un crecimiento integral del hombre.
Puesto que la evangelización es tarea peculiar de la Iglesia, se extiende a todas sus diversas formas
de vida: el anuncio, la celebración, el testimonio contribuyen a la par y, aunque de diversa forma, anuncian
el mismo idéntico misterio. Además, como la evangelización no consiste en un anuncio desencarnado de la
realidad, supone que el que anuncia se vea plenamente implicado y comprometido con el contenido de su
predicación. Pablo VI recordaba que el hombre contemporáneo escucha de mejor grado a los testigos que a

los maestros, o si escucha a los maestros, lo hace porque son testigos (EN 41). El papel del cristiano en su
anuncio del Evangelio es, en primer lugar, vivirlo en primera persona, para que sea su misma vida la que hable. La fuerza de
atracción del Evangelio, una vez acogido, no permite que nadie delegue en otros el anuncio; es inconcebible que un hombre
escuche la Palabra y se dé al Reino, sin convertirse a su vez en uno que lo atestigüe y anuncie (EN 23).
La evangelización, precisamente porque es un anuncio de salvación que pone en el centro el amor de Cristo
revelado en su muerte y resurrección, debe ser capaz de expresar hasta el máximo el respeto a todas las demás expresiones
religiosas. El misterio de Dios revelado en Cristo, que ningún cristiano puede dispensarse de anunciar, conoce sin embargo
ciertas etapas que s61o podrán alcanzarse con el diálogo, la búsqueda sincera de la verdad y el amor.
La evangelización es un proceso complejo (EN 24), formado de varios elementos que sólo en su
complementariedad recíproca dejan vislumbrar la riqueza del acontecimiento y la necesidad y la urgencia de
entregarse a él para que el Reino de Dios crezca y llegue pronto a su cumplimiento.
La palabra euaggelion, que significa evangelio o «buena noticia», aparece 72 veces en el Nuevo Testamento, 54 de
ellas en el corpus paulino. Tiene una amplia gama de significados: el mensaje cristiano en su conjunto (Mc 1,1); la buena
noticia de Jesús (2Cor 4,4) o de Pablo (2Cor 4,3); es para todos (Mc 13,10; 16,15); es una revelación de Dios (Gál 1,11-12),
que ha de ser creída (Mc 1,15) y proclamada (1Cor 9,14.16.18). Hay que arriesgarlo todo por el evangelio (Mc 8,35; Rom
1,16), servirlo (Rom 1,1; 15,16), defenderlo (Flp 1,7.16); se le pueden poner obstáculos (1Cor 9,12), se le puede rechazar
(Rom 10,16) o distorsionar (Gál 1,6-7). Euaggelion es la buena noticia de la verdad (Gál 2,5.14), de la esperanza (Col 1,23),
de la paz (Ef 6,15), de la promesa de Dios (Ef 3,6), de la inmortalidad (2Tim 1,10), de la resurrección de Cristo (1Cor
15,1ss.; 2Tim 2,8) y de la salvación (Ef 1,13). [En definitiva, Evangelio en el Nuevo Testamento designa la noticia que se
refiere a Dios o que proviene de Él y se convierte en un término técnico para referirse al mensaje acerca de Jesucristo. Por
tanto, no se refiere sólo a la predicación, sino a la nueva realidad que Dios ha introducido en la historia humana, y por esto
equivale al contenido de la misma fe cristiana.] El pensamiento maduro de santo Tomás de Aquino resume el evangelio
como el conjunto de todo lo que se refiere a la gracia del Espíritu Santo.

Hospital Stays and Holy Communion
When being admitted to the hospital
you are typically asked if you would
like a clergy visit. Please answer yes
in order for someone from the
Catholic Church to be able to bring
you Holy Communion, or pray with
you. It does not mean that you want a priest to visit you.
We have Eucharistic Ministers who bring Communion to
the hospital every day of the week. If you are not asked
about a visit from your church, please let them know you
would like a Communion visit.
