June 14 Luncheon
Coach Bill Clark,
UAB Football
Bill Clark, who guided Jacksonville State to a record-setting season in 2013 and the highest NCAA Division I final ranking in school history, was named head football coach at
UAB in January, 2014, becoming the fifth head coach in Blazers' history.
Clark brought a wealth of coaching experience to the Blazers, both at the collegiate and
high school levels. He has more than 20 years of experience, having spent a year as the
head coach at Jacksonville State before coming to UAB.
Clark completely turned around the UAB program in his first year on the Southside. He
guided the Blazers to a 6-6 record after UAB had won only a combined five games the
previous two seasons. The Blazers became bowl eligible for the first time in a decade under Clark.
The UAB head coach was named 2014 C-USA Coach of the Year in an unofficial vote by the league’s media.
In 2014, the Blazers had a school record 15 players earn All-Conference USA honors, including three firstteam selections (RB Jordan Howard, DE Diaheem Watkins and KR J.J. Nelson). Nelson was named the

Cellular Sales Authorized Agent of Verizon Wireless
Cellular Sales was founded in 1993 by Dane and Meg Scism. The company
marketed service on behalf of Cellular One and GTE Wireless prior to the advent of Verizon Wireless in April 2000. Cellular Sales continued to grow
through the late 90's and early 2000's by making its original independent sales
representatives partners in new territory markets it opened.
The fourth region opened was the Alabama Market in 1998 with the original Alabama Headquarters
opening in Gadsden. The company set itself apart from other cellular agents in the market by impressing a professional dress code and providing a unique buying experience by focusing on total
customer satisfaction.
Nationally, Cellular Sales operates in close to 30 states with over five-hundred and fifty stores. Today Cellular Sales of Alabama's main offices are here in Birmingham and consists of twenty-nine
locations including six stores in Tallahassee and Panama City. Cellular Sales' Alabama Market employs over two hundred sales and administrative associates.
Cellular Sales of Alabama was named “Agent of the Year” for Verizon Wireless’ Georgia and Alabama region at the company’s recent 10th Annual Agent Summit. This was the second consecutive
Agent of the Year award for Cellular Sales of Alabama, which operates twenty-three locations in
Alabama and are graded based on customer satisfaction and sales accomplishments over the
course of the year.

rom the President…
Can you believe we are almost half way thru 2016!!! It has been wonderful
to finally have the cold weather behind us so let’s enjoy the beautiful ‘warm’
summer days and remember what winter was like when it gets hot and humid as Alabama does in the summertime.
We are excited about the 35th Annual I Love America (ILA) Day which is always a great
time for our community to come together and celebrate the freedoms that we have in
this great country and to honor our military. As always there will be something for everyone so mark your calendar for scheduled for June 30th at Wald Park. We will have
free swimming, children’s area sponsored by Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church,
Karen Odle
Pops in the Park presented by Shades Mountain Baptist Church Orchestra AND a
“movie in the park” for the entire family so save the date and check out details elsewhere in this newsletter.
The movie, selected by popular vote, will be “Minions” so bring your blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy an
evening under the stars with your family and neighbors!
I hope you received your letter outlining our “pig” (piggy bank) project. Please consider being part of this to
make a statement to folks shopping in our community. It is getting a lot of good momentum so don’t miss
your opportunity to get in on the first order.
Also you received information about the seminar we will be having on September 22nd with Pete Blank. For
those of you that attended the February luncheon and asked to have him back, we have done better by having him for a full day. He will be covering Customer Service in the morning and Leadership in the afternoon.
We expect this to be a sellout so don’t miss your opportunity to get reservations for you and your employees.
For additional information, feel free to call our office at 205.823.5011.
We have a lot of Ribbon Cuttings and Grand Openings coming up over the summer months so please note
your calendar and plan to attend all of these that your schedule allows. It means so much to the new businesses that choose Vestavia Hills and it is a great way to get to know them as well as their staff so be sure to
welcome them to our city.
Summertime is extremely slow even in the best of times so make sure you “Shop Vestavia Hills First” to help
our businesses stay in business! Check our mobile app at VH2Go (you can download it for free at your app
store), check the Vestavia Hills Living magazine or check our website at www.vestaviahills.org for members
by name, product or service to see the wide variety we have available in our chamber.
As this newsletter goes to press, so does our 2016 Vestavia Hills Living magazine. Be on the lookout for this
to hit your mailbox by the end of the month. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we did putting it together.
Have a great summer and I hope to see you at “I Love America Day”!
Unity. Prosperity. Family.

school’s first Walter Camp first-team All-American following the season.
The Blazers also experienced the second-highest increase nationally in home attendance average, increasing
by more than 130 percent.
Prior to taking the helm of the Jacksonville State program, Clark was assistant head coach and the defensive
coordinator at South Alabama. Prior to joining the Jaguars' staff, he was one of the most successful high
school coaches in the State of Alabama.
Clark joined South Alabama in 2008 after spending nine years as head coach at Prattville (Ala.) High School
where he led the Lions to national prominence. He won a pair of Class 6A State Championships as his last two
teams won 30 straight games, while the 2007 squad was ranked No. 2 in the nation in USA Today's national
high school poll.
Following his final season at Prattville High School, he was named the Alabama High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was also selected as the Schutt Southeast Regional Coach of the Year.
Clark served on the staff of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic three times, including as head coach in
the summer of 2007. He also served as head coach in the 2004 North-South All-Star Game. Clark began his
coaching career as an assistant at Piedmont High School (1990-91) and also has coaching stints at Tuscaloosa
County High School (1992-94), Coffee County (Ga.) High School (1995-96) and Dothan High School (199798).
He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1990 with a degree in physical education. Clark and his wife, Jennifer, have two children: daughter, Katie (20) and son Jacob (18).

As Regional Directors, Jason Love and David Surber contribute the success of the company to a "People
First" approach. The people who make the daily sacrifice to provide for their family by spending their "work
life" with Cellular Sales, and the clients the company is so fortunate to serve, are together the people Cellular
Sales serve first.

Trustee Spotlight
George Pierce
Once a week you will find George Pierce, Vestavia Hills City Council Member, having lunch at a
restaurant in Vestavia Hills meeting with citizens to answer questions or address concerns about our
city. When asked about the purpose of his weekly lunch sessions, George responded "I'm not a politician, I'm a public servant." George has been a public servant for the city of Vestavia Hills for
over 17 years. He is currently serving his second term on the City Council, where he serves as the
liaison to the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, as well as, the Chairman of the Vestavia Hills
Standing Annexation Committee. George also served on the Board of Zoning Adjustment for 12
years, chairing that committee for 6 years, and was also Chairman of the Mayor's Ordinance Revision Committee.
In addition to his leadership roles in city government, George has been a leader in his church and the VH Chamber. He has been a member of the VH Chamber since 2000, serving on the Board of Directors from 2004 - 2008.
George was Vice-President of the VH Chamber's Business Development Committee. In 2007, he was chosen as the
Chamber's Board Member of the Year. George is also a member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, where he
has been an usher since 2001.
George and his wife Kacy, who is principal of Liberty Park Middle School, have called Vestavia Hills home
since 1986. They raised their three children, Ali, Amy and Adam, in Vestavia Hills, where all three graduated from Vestavia Hills High School. All three graduated from Auburn University returning to the area to raise their families, which
include George and Kacy's eight grandchildren. "Vestavia Hills is a great family-oriented community," said George.
George grew up in Auburn, Alabama and is a graduate of Auburn High School and Auburn University. He was
a member of the Student Government Association and Kappa Alpha Order while a student at Auburn University.
George is employed locally at Associated Builders and Contractors.
Nicol Pettway-Summit Express Urgent Care
L. Nicol Pettway, MD, the Chief Medical Director at Summit Express
Urgent Care, is a native of Alabama and has been practicing medicine in
the Birmingham area for the past 20 years. She earned a degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University where she was awarded a
Harvard College grant. She received her Doctorate of Medicine from the
University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham where she
was awarded a Dean's Scholarship. Dr Pettway became board certified in Internal Medicine after
completing a residency at the Baptist Health Systems in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1997. She has
practiced emergency medicine for more than 16 years and urgent care for four years. Her certifications include: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advance Life support. Dr.
Pettway has also successfully completed the training and testing in order to become a certified Department of Transportation medical examiner.
While offering a state of the art digital x-ray, a moderately complex lab and Occupational Health services in addition to
routine urgent care services, Summit Express Urgent Care, LLC is at the top of it's field. In addition, Summit Express
Urgent Care has a unique distinction from the other urgent care clinics in the area because it focuses solely on urgent
care. The latest trend is to perform both primary care as well as urgent care. Dr Pettway feels that during busy times such
as flu season, critical health maintenance issues can "fall through the cracks". The clinic also has a system in place in
which each visit, with the patient's consent, will be faxed to their primary care physician. Therefore, local physicians
can feel confident that their patients will not be "lost" to them and better patient follow up is ensured. This process also
ultimately helps to optimize continuity of care.
SEUC proudly boasts an average visit time of 35 minutes (45 minutes during flu season). In addition, patrons, despite
feeling ill, often comment via social media that their visits are pleasant experiences. As the clinic enters it's third year of
business, they would like to thank the people of Vestavia and the surrounding areas for their continued support.
