no woman was ever borne speechlesse, but why Utricia Ogle should bee it
towards Constantin Huijgens, I could not imagine till now, that your ladyship
hath beene pleased to awake and to give me some reason, why sbe hath slept
so long. Neither will I bee too inquisitive about the validitie of that reason,
your onely will and pleasure having allwayes beene the rule of mine, and no
satisfaction pretended beyond your owne, whieh I hope, Madam, you are to

word and corne to informe us, what may bee the reason of your famous
Sibyllas remooving ) , and which way she may bee gone, this being a most

towne of Utrecht is a mightie looser by it, and should have hindred it by all
possible violent civilities, so that the ashes of that Phénix had beene preserved,

be broken by any waight or streugth. The King of France is as yet unresolved
in the question, notwithstanding be hath beene curious to moove it to an
assemblie of the best philosophers of Paris, the microcosme of his kingdome.

hath no cause to apprehend the cracking blow of these little
innoxious gunnes. If you did, Madam, a servant may bold them close in his

of guns and the spirrit of sulpher as the powder; where although they are
charged, yet untill they bee discharged, gives no report or sound ; the discharging
of these glasses is by the breakeinge of a pièce or part or end of the tailes,
where the discharging of guns are by much firelockes, scrues or the like,
which setts fire or gives vent to the powder, but these sulpherousse spirrits,
having as it seemes a more forceable nature, it doth viollently thrust itselfe
out, where itt findes vent, like as wind, but rather like lire, being of a firy
nature, and may have the effects of bright shineing fire, which, wben it bas
noe vent, lyes as dead, but as soone as it eau ease out a passage, or findes a
vent, it breakes forth in a violent crack or thundering noisse. I doe not
saye, the effects of these spirritts are to flame or to burne after your way, but
only it hath the like effects as to break, dispersse and spread abroad as bright
shineing fire doth, for oylye sulphur, vittral ) spirritts and tbe like firy
natures are those which are called a cold dead tire, that is the exterior part
is colde and dull, although the interior is hott and active. As for the wounder,
how this liquid matter should be putt into this glasse, for it is vissible, a
liquid matter is therein, which to my sensés itt must be first putt into the
matter or substance that makes tbe glasses, and wben tbe glasse is blowne,
the liquer runs or crouds to the most hollowest and largest place it eau get
into, like as wind will blow tbe watter into a crowd or heape togeither and
fill all hollow places it can gett into, as ditebes, pitts or the like; soe doth tbe
breatb of the glassemaker blow that oyly essences or spirritts into tbe belly
of the glasse, where, before it can have soe much tyme to retire back, tbe end
of tbe little porus taile is soathred ) np, where affterwards, wben the soadred )
part is broke of, tbe spirritts findeing vent strngles and strives to gett forth,
wherin tbe strife it breakes tbe glasse to pièces, wberwith itt makes a noise
or report like a gun, or rather as a fired house or the like; I meane not for
the loudenesse of the sound, for the report is small to such loud reports,
though it be great for so smale a bodye, but I compare these spirritts like to
fire, and the glasse as the house wherin the firy spirritts are in as much as
wheu they breake forth, they rend and disperse the materialls of theire transparant house severall wayes, as alsoe the firy oyly spirritts spreads ittselfe
into vapor and dyes, for dilation is the way to désolation, and as this glasses
breakes wben discharged, soe I believe guns at there discharging would breake,
if the barrills were of glasse, as they are of iron, and I know nothing to the
contrary, but this liquid substance in these glasses may be tbe oyle of saltpietter, which is flatious, brimstone and charcole, which is hot mixt togeither,
and soe may be a liquid gunpowder, or rather gunpowder made liquid, put
into tbe glasses; as for the sound or report it gives, wben discharged by giving
the glasse veut, may be the same cause, which makes ayre give a report, for
ayre, although it be equall tempred or cold, yet wben it have ben pent up
and afterwards have vent, will make a loud report; soe will watter or any
liquer, for ayre and winde bave vocall noisses; but to draw you towards an
end, itt appeares thus to my sensés, t h a t the strife aud the spirritts or gunpowder liquer and the bricklynesse of the glasse is the cause of the breakinge

last upon this subject. But expérience having carryed me to a new by way, from
whence I do not see how to bring myselfe upon the path of truth without

judicious sheete of paper upon my ignorant curiositie. In ordre of your E x .
détermination, I did conceave, if the matter inclosed in the hollow parts of
these bottels should be a sulphureons liquid gunpowder, that without question

farre short of my opinion, that firing one of these bottels to the reddest hight
of heat, I have not onely seene it without any effect, hut also beeing cooled

I have received your second letler by Mr. Dewerts"), wherin I find your dissatisfaction of
the opinion of tliose littlc glasses. Truly arts are as obscure and hard to linde out by those that
are unlerned in them, as natures workes; but to cleer my opinion, or rather to answer yours
desires, I shall argue something more of them, though my arguments may be as weake as my
opinions, and my opinions as weake as my judgement, and my judgement as weake as want of
knowlledge can make it. — As for your liquor, you say in your letter, that if it were a sulphurous
iiquor, or a liquid gunpowder — as I said — I thought it might bee, doubtlesse it would be
active by the help of fire; I answer for that, fire hath severall active effects both in itLselfe
and uppon other substances, or subjects, wberfore, if the liquor had be[e]n dry powder, it might
be subject to that effect of fire, as to llash. (lame, or bounce, but if tbe powder were wett, tbe
fire could worke noe such effects; but as the substance is a liquor, (ire is as subject to that
substance or matter, as that substance or matter is to (ire, for all liquors, although strongwith
spirritts and hott in opération, will quench lire as sudenly, as (ire shall evapporate liquor; take
quantity for quantity, and it is probable, that the high fire, you did applye to tbe glasse, did
eveporat ont tbe liquor in tbe glasse, which might be the weakening and changing or altering
the former effects. Alsoo you say, you cannot perceive tbe buble to be a licquor. I answer, that
it is probable, tbe licquor, if any be therin. was evaporated out either by the (ire, you applyed,
or by tbe vent of passage, which may soone turn itt into vapor, by reason of the little quantity
that is in a glasse; thus it might be wasted before tbe trulh could possible be found oui; for
certainly to my sensé, as alsoe to my reason, a liquor apeared to be in those glasses, you sent
m e ; but if there be noe licquor in those glasses, then it is probable, it might be peut up ayre
enclosed therin, which having vent was the cause of the sound or report, which those glasses
gave. — Thus, Sir, you may perceive by my argueings, I strive tu make my former opinion or
sensé good, allthough I doe not binde myselfe to opinions, but truth; and the truth is, that,
though I cannot linde out the truth of the glasses, yet

Un bon ange vous a sauvé à ce matin de ma dernière importunité. J'alloy vous plaider de
bouche, s a n s ) parler, plus que ne doibt un pere, du scavoir et capacitez de mon Mis, que j'ose
bien mettre en balance contre qui que ce soit de ses compétiteurs. Il y a Irois articles sur lesquels je m'avance humblement à fonder sa poursuitte, bien content de le veoir postposé, si
aucun des pretendans en peut alléguer un seul de la mesme force.

Le premier et, j'avoue, le moins important, est la longue et constante amitié que j'ay eu
l'honneur d'entretenir avec tous Messieurs les nobles et leurs prédécesseurs, et les occasions qu'eu
suitte j'ay rencontrées et embrassées de leur rendre tesmoignage de ma tres-hunible affection
à leur service, en quoy je sçay bien qu'en particulier la générosité de .M. de Wassenaer et de
plusieurs antres ne voudra pas me desadvouër.
Le second est la suitte d'un service de plus de 80 ans, qu'ayeul et oncle et pere de mon
prétendant avons rendu à l'Estat, sans interruption el, grâces à Dieu, sans reproche.
