Colleen Kigin supports the efforts of the Director, including interinstitutional relations and government liaison. CIMIT, a Boston-based
consortium of the major teaching hospitals and engineering schools,

expertise from leading academic and industry participants. CIMIT‘s
mission is to catalyze technologic innovations that will have a major
beneficial impact on healthcare. Colleen also serves on the Science Review Committee, and provides
CIMIT guidance for projects that focus on rehabilitation of patients with disabilities. Colleen previously
served at Partners HealthCare System, where she coordinated the system‘s cost reduction efforts, and as
the Director of PT Services at MGH. She presently is an Assistant Professor at the MGH Institute of Health
Professions. Colleen earned her M.S. at Boston University, Masters in Public Administration from the
Harvard Kennedy School of Government and her Doctorate in PT from the MGHIHP. She served on the
APTA Board of Directors from 1988-1997, including three years as Vice President.

Carl DeRosa is Professor of the Physical Therapy at Northern Arizona University,
co-owner of DeRosa Physical Therapy and Summit Health and Fitness in
Flagstaff, Arizona. His scholarly interests have been focused on the anatomy and
mechanics of the human spine and shoulder girdle with particular emphasis on
their relationship to orthopedics, sport, and rehabilitation sciences. Carl‘s service

Scott Ward is the President of the American Physical Therapy Association.
He received his PhD (Physiology) and a BA degree in Physical Therapy, both
from the University of Utah. Besides his administrative and teaching roles,
Scott serves on the staff of the University of Utah Hospital Burn Center. He
directs operations of the University of Utah Rehabilitation and Wellness Clinic,

Steven received his AB in Biology from Clark University, his physical
therapy certificate from Columbia University, MS in physical therapy from Boston University and his Ph.D.
in neurophysiology from Emory University. He has defined the selection criteria for the application of
EMG biofeedback to restore upper extremity function among chronic patients with stroke. These findings
became the inclusion criteria for most constraint induced movement therapy stroke studies. He recently
completed his role as Principal Investigator for the NIH nationally funded EXCITE Trial, the first multicenter Phase III non–surgical, non-pharmacological, upper extremity stroke rehabilitation study ever
funded by the NIH. Steven‘s interests in feedback also led to the comparison of center of pressure
biofeedback with Tai Chi for falls reduction in older adults. He has over 200 publications and 600 national
and international presentations on these topics. He has served in multiple APTA administrative and
leadership capacities at both component and national levels.

Australia, in 1962. After residency training in internal medicine and neurology, he
returned to graduate training and received the Ph.D. degree in neurophysiology
from Monash University, Australia. After postdoctoral training at the National
Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Baltimore, MD,
Zev became an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Physiology at the State
University of New York, Syracuse. In 1978, he became an Assistant Professor of
Physiology at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, IL. He now holds the John G. Searle
Chair in Rehabilitation Research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, while also holding
appointments as Professor of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University and at
Hines VA, Hines, IL. Zev is also Director of the Medical Biomechanics Program at Northwestern

Michael Weinrich is Director of the National Center for Medical
Rehabilitation Research in the National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development at NIH. He received his undergraduate and
medical education at Harvard University, trained in medicine and
neurology at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and in
neurophysiology at the National Institutes of Health. While on the
faculty at Stanford University, he developed a computer system to help
stroke patients recover speech and language. Michael served as Professor of Neurology and
Medical Director of the University of Maryland Rehabilitation System until January 2000 when he
moved to the NIH.

Lucy M. Robbins
Caregiver
Lucy Robbins is a caregiver because she is the step-mother of a severely brain
injured son. She has learned to take care of him as he was unable to continue to
live independently and is, therefore, living with Lucy and her husband, at home.
There is no brain injury facility for him to go to where he could be looked after in a
supportive environment. Lucy has learned about medicines, therapeutic exercises,
scheduling, nutrition and emotional support to name a few, not to mention coping
with a "new" normal for her son, herself and the entire family. Lucy and her
husband work as a team on their son's continued recovery.

Peter W. Robbins
Caregiver
Peter Robbins is the father of a 37 year old brain injured son, living at home, resulting
in his non-professionally trained caregiver status. Peter‘s son sustained a TBI 4 years
ago. He spent 9½ weeks in a New Zealand hospital, 6½ months at Spaulding Rehab
and was discharged to homecare (placement in a SNF environment was personally
not an option). As his caregiver/advocates Peter and his wife assembled a team of
interacting therapists, who for the past 3 years have made significant contributions to
the recovery progress, the most remarkable being the PTs. Through their dedication,
time, patience and my observations, Peter has gained a great deal of knowledge in the TBI rehabilitation

Marc Goldstein has been a member of the APTA staff since 1987. Originally
Associate Director, Department of Education, he was promoted to Director of the
newly created Department of Research Services in 1990. Since that time, Marc has

and Educator in the area of inherited and acquired Neuromuscular disorders
(NMD). As a clinician, she has been part of a multidisciplinary team at a tertiary
care muscular dystrophy association (mda) supported clinic. Currently she is
serving on the steering committee for a CDC initiated project to recommend care guidelines for patients
with Duchenne‘s muscular dystrophy (DMD). As a researcher, Shree has been involved in multi center
national and international studies documenting 1) the natural history of various NMD‘s, 2) the reliability,
validity and sensitivity of outcome measures used in these populations, 3) the effectiveness of
pharmaceutical interventions in these populations. Currently she is a Co-PI in a Muscular dystrophy
surveillance and tracking and research network (MDSTARnet), a population based study of patients with

Zary Segall is Distinguished Professor in Computer Science and Electrical
Engineering and the Founding Director of the Center for Convergent Design. Prior
of joining the University of Oregon as Computer and Information Science
Department Head, Zary was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. As part of
his research activity, he had developed theoretical methods and practical systems
for parallel processing, highly dependable systems, networking and wearable
information systems. This work led to software licensing to IBM, AT&T, GE and
NASA and to applications to parallel processing, NASA missions, Air Traffic
Control and telecommunication services. His current research work is in Human Aware Wearable

Barbara Smith has been funded for more than 25 years to conduct exercise
interventions in individuals with chronic diseases including breast cancer, CVD,
diabetes, HIV, and Parkinson‘s disease. Recently she served as PI of a study
assessing nurse‘s risk of exposure to pathogens, their knowledge and use of universal
precautions, and willingness to seek care in Sub-Saharan Africa. The results were
presented at the AIDS 2008 Conference in Mexico City. She is a fellow in the American
