FRONT COVER
Due to popular request, we are attempting to make description of the front cover
photo's. This month is a 15 cwt Canadian Pattern Signals Van. Note the 3
unusual aerials on the roof.
For interest, previously we have had a 40 ton, 24 wheel Diamond T tank
transporter. . From the look of the hangar and other pies this could well be the back
of the Broadmeadows Military facilty.
May we had a N09 Ford FAT, (Field Artilery Tractor).

COMMITTEE MEETING held at ROTA hall on 1/4/2003
Those present: Graham Jacobs, Lionel Smart, Ian Eddie, Don Ashton, Michael
Kaukas, Brian Brown.
Items discussed:
Discussion took place on the letter from the Department of Justice, Consumer
Affairs Vie. It appears that we have not included a Grievance Proceedure into our
Constitution after it was made law a few years back. This MUST now be included
and because it is an alteration to the Constitution, it wil have to be done in the
usual manner. Listed one month in advance in theClub Newsletter, then voted on
at the next meeting. This wil be done for the July Meeting. We again advise
members that this is a MUST DO.
It was decided that the notice about Anzac Dayincluding the post back form wil be
placed in the newsletter in the months of December, February, March and ApriL.
Extra keys need to be cut for access to the library and cupboard containing our
supper items.

COROWA 2003
With Grandson's, Luke, Ishwar, and their cousin Mathew Ledwidge I set off on
Thursday and we arrived at Corowa about 1330 hours. After setting up camp we
relaxed and began talking to various other enthusiasts which for me is an important
part of the doings at Corowa. Because of my leg problems, I stayed around camp
and enjoyed the many members who dropped by throughout our stay. Toilet visits
were managed by Ishwar throwing me to the facilities.
i was surprised at the number of Studebakers nearly all of which were in pristine
condition, many in the livery of their employers, Fire Brigades etc. All in all there
were about 30 Stude's amoung a total of our 100 ex-military vehicles.
The weather was perfect and Sunday's vehicle line up at Rutherglen was most
Impressive. We travelled up in my Ford 15cwt soft top utility. As usual, the time
passed all too quickly and we left on Sunday morning and had an uneventful run
home.
i would like to thank President, Lionel and the Corps members for their birthday
greetings in the March Newsletter, I hope the next 80 years passes more slowly.

Corowa 2003
Thursday:lleft early morning and headed to Lionel's where we were met by Ian
Jarrott. We proceeded in 3 vehicle convoy, Ian in his Dodge, myself in the Ferret
and Lionel in his new Land Cruiser with RAEME trailer. At a constant 70 to 80 kph
run, we stopped at Bonnie Doon and refuelled before making our way to the first
McDonalds on the way so that Ian could refuel himself. Fortunately this was just
outside Wangarratta.
We arrived at Corowa and began setting up at a liesurely pace when Ben turned
up having his convoy from Melbourne so we set up the 11 X 11. The rest of the
dat was spent chatting and wandering around looking at the many vehicles of all
different types. I spent part of the afternoon attempting to "tune out" the misfiring in
a MK1 Ferret, newly acquired by John from South Australia. Hence for me the
main part of the day, or what was left of it was spent talking Ferrets.
Friday: There was a convoy to Beechworth and some of the later arrivals went to
the Bandianna Museum although most had done this on the Tghursday before our
arrivaL. Lionel and I decided to stay back at camp and spend the day resting in the
warm sun, the only movement was that after lunch we took the Ferret up and
fuelled up and grabbed some ice. Later in the afternoon, i took John for a run in
the Ferret. Some time later, i realised the goggles were missing off the helmet and
figured they had blown off while john was in the Ferret. i comandeered Ben and
his Land Rover and we found them just out of town, thanks Ben! There was the
usual chit chat and many went out for dinner on the Friday night.
Saturday: The main day is Saturday and we had the large vehicle convoy into
Rutherglen, Mick Bush travellng with me in the Ferret. It waould have been a very
impressive sight, the NSW Police controlling travic to get all 92? vehicles across
the bridge from Corowa and safely back again. The usual photo shoot was held at
Rutherglen before we returned for the parade up and down the main street of
Corowa and finishing at the park where the swap meet quickly got under way with
treasures being found and money being spent. The local Lions Club w2as cooking
and sellng lunch nearby which many took advantage of. The Stude's were all
lined up and I have heard that there were aroound 20 or so. After near on breaking my budget I headed back to camp. Once back at camp I met up with Jim
Bennie who I hadn't seen in years with his DUKW. Jim and Bruce were giving
rides in the DUKW through out the day and we spent much time catching up. With
Bruce driving the DUKW we kept looking for places to put it in and out of the water
without using the boat ramp. Whilst sitting on the bank of the river watching the
amphibious vehicles play in the water, Ben and I noticed a Jeep on a track on the
other side of the river so we decided a Recon in the Ferret was in order. Ben and I
took the Ferret and went in search of the river bank track and eventually found it
and searched out a place to put the DUKW in and out of the water. We headed
back to camp and proceeded to inform Jim and Bruce of the place we had discovered. I noticed the first aide box on the Ferret had fallen open and the contents
were missing. I thought they had fallen out on the track. Bruce took the DUKW
back into the water while Jim rode in the Ferret, Lionel and Ben following in Ben's
Land Rover we went back to the new found water entry. I found the first aide kit in
Middle of the track and put it back in the Ferret. Jim and I arrived and Jim knew
the spot as he had the DUKW out there before to rescue a bogged vehicle. There
was a Jeep playing in a bog hole and a Blitz that was driven into a backwash having fun in the area. Ben and Lionel arrived within a few minutes. Ben had tried to
keep up with the Ferret but had to slow down when Lionel's head nearly went
through the roof of the Landy. Lucky for Lionel it's a soft top. We went back via
the bitumen to camp. That night I got out the night vision gear and we all had a
play with it.
Sunday: We had decided Saturday night, we would take the DUKW down the
bitumen and put the DUKW in the water and let the current take us back to camp.
We entered the water and cruised Iiesurely down the river. Jim let me into the drivers seat at this point and i took the DUKW back to camp. Before exiting the water,
Jim instructed me on how to spin the DUKW on it's axis in the water which we did
and have nick-named them "river donuts". An extremely enjoyable experience
thanks Jim, near on enthused me to go out looking to buy a DUKW...... ..that is
until
I got home and told Leanne that it would look good in the front yard.
Once back at camp, we completed our packing and headed off in convoy with John
and Ben. Lionel and Ian stayed some extra time up there.
Corowa was once again an experience, catching up with some old friends and as
usual, making some new. At this point I'd like to thank the organisers,
Jan Thompson and her team of quiets that are always hiding in the background
giving assistance. No doubt those that we only see at Corowa, we wil no doubt
catch up with again next year.

SALEIWELLINGTON SHIRE AIRSHOW
Several members from East of Bairnsdale travelled to
Longford on Saturday afternoon with an unscheduled stop
on the way ("ferret" had fuel troubles with his Inter) where
they camped overnight after a tour of the local area.
Leaving Longford at 8am, proceeded to Sale with a brief wait for "ferret" at the
South Gippsland Highway (electrical; troubles this time) we were joined by Sale
member "trakket' Traill in his Champ and set sail for the West Sale Airport. A
former WW2 base. (Bombing and air gunnery).
After some dodgy directions from officials we set up in the correct location to be
joined shortly after by more East Gippsland and Melbourne members. With the
cloud base at 3,000 feet, the weather couldn't have been better - no squinting into
the sun all day and until the show started, joy flights could be had in a WW2
vintage Beech 18, DC3, a Robinson helicopter and the RAF balloon.
Commencement of the show saw displays from Pip Borman in his Edge 540
aerobatic aircraft, the RAF Roulettes, F111, Hwaks and Warbirds including P51
Mustangs, De Havilland Vampire, T28 Trojan, Cessna Bird Dog and a Polish Wilga
(a Fiessler Storch on steroids) or as one observer commented, a wheat silo with
wings.
Fire bombing, HeliMed 1 and the RAF S26 Rescue helicopter also put on various
displays along with various experimental and aerobatic aircraft. The shows closure
included a mock attack by the T28 with the Bird-Dog observing and featured some
spectacular pyrotechnics with the last bang involving 1,000 litres of jet fuel that was
heard 10 km away.
Vehicles attending: Land Rover X4, Jeep X2, GMC, Toyota FFR& RAEME trailer,
International K4, Studebaker US6, C15 Blitz, Austin Champ.
