Interfaith Couples or Couples of Faith?
Rabbi Lisa Kingston
Sociologists, statisticians, and
studies often use numbers to
indicate undeniable truths. Hebrew
Union College Research Professor,
Steven M. Cohen, has found that
80 percent of Reform-raised Jews
who married in 2000-2013 married
non-Jews. The 2013 Pew Report
titled, A Portrait of Jewish Americans,
taught us that among Jews with a non-Jewish
spouse, only 20 percent say they are raising
their children Jewish by religion, and 25% are
raising their children partly Jewish by religion.
These numbers are meant to be alarming and
fear inducing. After all, you can’t argue with
the numbers. Or maybe you can?
Cohen discovered another 83,000 individuals
who identify as Jews, even though they
reported no Jewish parents and had not
undergone conversion! Unbeknownst to even
keen observers of Jewish life, about half of
those who identify as Jews are part of our
community because we accept them to be
such. Many have married Jews, many are
raising Jewish children, many have discovered
distant Jewish ancestry, and many are on a
spiritual journey that has led them to Judaism
via our synagogue doors. While numbers may
give us an overall picture of Jewish trends in
America, we should not overlook the rich
personal stories of people who every day
makes choices and commitments to Judaism.
When it comes to looking at Jewish identity,
it seems that research and numbers leave
much open for interpretation. Although the
Pew Study confirmed that 79,000 adults
underwent a formal Jewish conversion,
One such woman, Allison McMillan, shared
her story on the website ejewishphilanthropy.

President’s Message
Jill Goldring, President
The festival of Shavuot marks the
giving of the Torah to the Jewish
People at Mt. Sinai. In ancient times
it began as a festival that marked
the end of the spring barley and the
beginning of the planting of the
winter wheat. In modern Reform
Judaism it is a celebration of Torah,
education, and actively choosing to
participate in Jewish life.
It is fitting that right after Shavuot this year,
our community’s Annual Meeting will be held
on Tuesday, May 26. As with the ancient
festival we mark the review of the past year
and look to the future season with its vast
potential for growth. And, like the modern
festival, we celebrate those who actively
participate in temple life by honoring our
exiting trustees for their past work, we vote
in our new trustees and entrust our future to
them. We also honor those in our community
who have made a tremendous impact.
We hope that you can join us this year at the
Annual Meeting on May 26, and review what
we have accomplished over the past year, and
celebrate our tremendous community. I look
forward to seeing you there.

com. Her non-Jewish husband reads books by
Jewish philosophers, does Kiddush and Motzi
on Friday nights from transliterated Hebrew,
and with friends and family, the couple
celebrate Jewish holidays in ways that make
both feel included and comfortable. While
Allison’s husband has decided not to convert
at this point, she does not feel that the term
interfaith couple accurately describes them.
Instead they are a couple of faith: Allison,
a Jew with a belief in a higher power, and
her husband, an individual who searches for
meaningful connections to Jewish traditions
and customs. Her husband may not be a
halachically (according to law) defined Jew,
but as someone who doesn’t practice anything
else, Allison certainly would not consider him
to be of another faith.
In today’s America, as more and more
identities are personally chosen and socially
constructed, the way we understand religious
identities must be more fluid in order to
appropriately recognize and welcome these
individuals into our Jewish community.
Would someone like this husband be formally
counted in a Jewish survey? Probably not.
Might he be found at Shabbat services, a
child’s b’nai mitzvah, volunteering his time,
and studying Torah? You betcha!
We are blessed to see similar stories from
individuals in our own community. It gives
our clergy a sense of joy and pride when we
see our community thrive because of the
commitments all of our members make. Still,
we know it is extra exceptional when those of
you who have not formally chosen Judaism,
dedicate your time and energy to strengthen
Iyar/Sivan/Tammuz 5775
the Jewish People. You do everything from
schlepping your children to Hebrew lessons
to blessing your children as they become
b’nai mitzvah. And along the way, (maybe)
you even learned to like gefilte fish! But most
of all, you offer the selfless gift of ensuring
a future for the Jewish People. We owe you
more than a simple todah rabbah, a thank
you. We owe you acceptance, inclusion, and a
sacred place among our people.
This new understanding that being Jewish
isn’t a pre-requisite for having a Jewish
identity has implications for our own
community as well as Reform Judaism as a
whole. Our job as a synagogue community
is to welcome whoever chooses to connect
themselves to us. During the last URJ
Biennial, President Rick Jacobs challenged
our congregations to practice “audacious
hospitality.” Part of this means not being
so quick to label a couple as interfaith or a
person as non-Jew. It does mean taking more
time to understand where individuals are on
their personal Jewish journeys and meeting
those individual’s needs through our language,
our rituals, and our programs. Rabbi Jacobs
states, “It is a veritable gift of God to have
the opportunity of a millennium: more nonJews who want in than Jews who want out.
That has never happened before. We dare not
squander this gift out of fear of what new
voices may say and where new opinions may
lead.” Jews today are facing an unprecedented
opportunity to share our rich tradition with
thousands who are searching for meaning and
looking to raise healthy and happy children
with a deep connection to Jewish community.
May PTBE be a community that welcomes all
who choose to enter.
Mission Statement of PTBE

The Jewish People have long seen the benefits
of immersing ourselves in an experience and
experiential learning that has been at the heart
of our tradition for thousands of years (what
is the Passover Seder if not an immersive
Jewish learning experience, after all?) In
recent years, Jewish educational ideologies
have been paying closer attention to the
power of immersive, experiential education
– particularly in the form of Jewish camping.
PTBE is proud to send veritable hordes of
our youth to local Jewish summer camps each
year, from URJ Camp Newman in Santa
Rosa, to Camp Tawonga in Yosemite, to the
PJCC Camp Keff in Foster City. Summer
has long
been a time
of abundant
fun, play,
and Jewish
experience
in the forms
of these and
many more
Jewish summer
adventures
available to
our youth.
But wouldn’t
it be sad if the
magic of these immersive experiences was
reserved only for the summer months? Those
gloriously long days of sunshine live long
in our memories, to be sure, but don’t the
other nine months of the year deserve some
memorable immersive experiences as well?
For many years now, our K-6th grade families
have enjoyed participating in our Family
Retreat. From Friday afternoon until Sunday
morning we have gathered together to spend
a weekend in Jewish community: learning
together, praying together, and making
fun and lasting memories together. Our
7th grade families and 10th grade students
have benefited from a similar experience
in the form of the fall B’nai Mitzvah &
Confirmation Retreat – where once again,
we get outside of our normal stomping
grounds to learn, play, and grow together in
an immersive Jewish environment. After each
of these retreats we have come back energized
and wondering, “How can we do more of
this?”
In the year ahead we have exciting new
opportunities for just this kind of learning in
our community. In the late summer we will
be instituting our very first 8th grade PostB’nai Mitzvah Retreat at Camp Newman,
where for an entire weekend, any PTBE 8th
grader, whether
enrolled in WNP
or not, is welcome
to join us up at
Camp Newman’s
kibbutz. In the
spring we will be
instituting our first
Spring Retreat for
3-6th graders, also
at Camp Newman,
so that they can
enjoy the fun of
camp during the
school year.
Additionally, to honor our PTBE families
who will be sending their children to any of
our Jewish summer camps this summer, we
will be celebrating our second-annual Camp
Shabbat on May 8. The evening will be full of
camp-style worship and ruach (spirit), with a
special opportunity to bless all of our PTBE
campers, as well as our graduating seniors
who are moving on to their next adventures.
We hope that you and your families will
take advantage of the great expanse of Jewish
immersive educational opportunities that
exist here at PTBE and elsewhere in our
vibrant Jewish community.

Never Forget These Years
SMRTY President – Emily Mellman
If you had looked at me four years ago and
told me that I would meet some of the most
incredible people in the world on a stretch
of land wedged into the rolling hills of Santa
Rosa, I might have laughed. My years at URJ
Camp Newman had previously ended in 6th
grade and I wasn’t planning on returning.
But during my freshman year of high school,
my cousin dragged me to the West Coast
Party, a Camp Newman sponsored event
that hosts hundreds of Jewish teens from all
over the western United States. As I got off
the bus with sweaty palms and a pounding
heart, I could feel something wash over me. I
remember lying in my bunk that night trying
to figure out what I was feeling. It wasn’t just
happiness or acceptance or love, but a mixture
of the three that seemed to spill out of each
cabin door. And from that weekend on, every
fiber of my being longed to sustain that joy.
The l’dor v’dor (from generation to generation)
we create through NFTY, BBYO, and
Jewish camping is unlike any family I have
witnessed. I have recently begun to realize
that this phenomenon is created through
the lack of a generational gap in these
communities.
Adults who attended Camps Tawonga and
Newman send their kids back because those
childhood vacation homes remain unchanged,
untouched by technological advancements
and undisturbed by the dysfunction in our
world. These camp communities create
shelters open to all who wish to share the love
of Judaism and family. These places breathe
enough life into us each time we enter that
our souls are sustained until the next time we
drive through their gates.
NFTY and
SMRTY have
allowed me to
experience this
feeling yearround. These
communities
have given me
the opportunity
to volunteer
my time, heart
and passion
to a group of
Emily Mellman and her NFTY friends at Gesher Kallah, 2014
people that
truly deserve
it. Being president, as well as religious and
cultural vice president of SMRTY has been
the most rewarding part of high school
for me. I hope the PTBE community
understands how grateful we teens are for
your faith and inclusion.
Thank you for an incredible 18 years of
traditions and connections. I only hope
that all our teens will dare to experience the
Jewish world in their own way and know that
SMRTY/NFTY, BBYO and camp would be
lucky to have you!

Receiving
Thursday, May 21, 7:00 pm
The Hebrew month of Sivan is a time of
gaining clarity of vision, discovering one’s life
purpose, and receiving guidance and direction
on actualizing our personal goals. Sivan is
a time of expressed creativity, of bringing
forth and communicating what is deep inside
of us. Sivan holds within it the holiday of
Shavuot, commemorating both the receiving
of Torah at Mt. Sinai and celebrating the
spring wheat harvest. During this time, our
ancestors would bring forth their bikkurim,
or First Fruits of the harvest. Traditionally, we
eat dairy products with honey on this holiday
because Torah is considered to be nourishing
like milk and sweet like honey.
Please join us as BEW member, Natasha
Kehimkar leads us in a cheesecake-making
workshop, after which we will delve in to
these notions of bounty, receiving, and the
“first fruits” of the soul that we each offer up
in the month of Sivan. (If dairy is not on your
diet, fret not! Natasha will be bringing some
dairy-and-gluten-free treats as well).

Help Us Help You
We are a caring community and want to
know if any of our members are ill at home
or in the hospital. If you know of someone
who is in need of special attention, please
be in touch with any of our clergy. Because
of privacy policies, hospitals do not inform
us when a member is a patient. Also, if you
know of a family in need of meals, please
contact Lolli in the temple office, 341-7701. We are here for our community and want to
offer comfort and support to all our families.
Please communicate with us so that we can be
there for you and your family in your time of
need. Now is a great time to join the Caring
Committee. The committee consists of the
following teams: Bereavement Support,
Visiting Team, and Meals. If you would like
to be part of the team, contact Ellen Saliman
at [email protected].

Multifaith Event – For the Whole Family
Iftar Service and Dinner
Sunday, June 28
Service: 7:15 pm Dinner: 8:30 pm
PTBE will again host a break the fast meal
in celebration of the holiday of Ramadan.
Pacifica Institute, our Turkish Muslim
partners in Burlingame, will bring their
Iftar traditional meal to our congregation.
Members of the 16 faith houses of the
Peninsula Multifaith Coalition also will be
invited to attend this service and meal. This is
an opportunity for your family to meet others
from all five major faiths.
During the month of Ramadan, which begins
in mid-June this year, observant Muslims fast
every day from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is
an important part of the Jewish, Christian
and Muslim traditions.
Pacifica Institute has been one of our closest
interfaith partners over the last eight years.
We share so many of the same challenges and
opportunities. Recently they hosted a Seder,
and now we will once again host Iftar. Last
year our attendance was near capacity, so
when you see the E-Blast with details, register
quickly.
This special evening and meal is free but
registration is required. If you would
like to help out with planning, set up,
cooking, clean-up or other volunteer
needs, please contact Michele Epstein at
[email protected].
We are always looking for new ideas and new
members. Please contact either Dick Heiman
or Michele Epstein and check us out on
the web at ptbe.org/community-interfaithfriendship/

Legacy Circle
Iyar/Sivan/Tammuz 5775
Legacy Circle - Now is the Time!
You love our PTBE community. It has welcomed you and your family for joyous Shabbat celebrations,
Jewish holidays, quality Jewish education for children and adults alike. You count other PTBE
members among your best friends. You cannot imagine a future without our temple and what it
represents in your life.
If the above paragraph describes you, please join your name with those members whose names
appear below in declaring that you wish to perpetuate our PTBE community by leaving a legacy
gift in whatever amount. There is no need to name an amount or to pay anything now. By
indicating that you plan to support PTBE with a gift after your lifetime, you are committing
to the vision of PTBE for your children, grandchildren and those yet to be welcomed into our
community. If you have specific questions of how you might plan for a legacy gift, our Legacy
Circle committee can arrange for a private, confidential conversation to discuss your options. Do
not procrastinate any longer! Now is the time to contact us at [email protected] to indicate
your interest in supporting the long-term health and well being of the community we love.

Shavuot Movie Midrash
Saturday, May 23
7:30 pm
Shavuot is the festival that marks the
giving of the Torah, a text we spend our
lives reading over and over again, looking
for new meaning. This year, spend it with
us watching and discussing a film about
reliving the same day over and over again,
and what can be found when you look at it
differently.
One of the funniest and most quotable
movies of the 20th century, Groundhog Day
is now over 20 years old, yet remains many
people’s favorite comedy and is one of the
most iconic Bill Murray performances of his
career. Cynical, bitter, spiritually and morally
aimless, Phil Connors is a news reporter
in Pennsylvania covering the Groundhog
Day festival. However, the morning after
Groundhog Day Phil wakes up to realize
. . . it’s Groundhog Day again. Seemingly
condemned to live the same day over and over
again, Phil starts to realize the possibilities
and limitations of his situation and grows as a
person in a way he never had before.
