Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is hard to believe that
spring is finally here and we are
half way through our 3rd
marking period! We have had an
incredibly busy winter season
and have celebrated the
successes of many schoolrelated activities.
The Northside Players did a
wonderful job presenting “The
Little Mermaid, Jr.” this year.
Our entire student body
enjoyed the performances
during the day and our friends
and family members enjoyed
two evening performances.
What incredible talent our
students have!
We also enjoyed our
students’ participation in the
Intermediate North Science Fair
on February 5. Our winners
were invited to participate in

“It's easier to take than to give. It's nobler to give than
to take. The thrill of taking lasts a day. The thrill of
giving lasts a lifetime.” ~Joan Marques
Sometimes the greatest lessons do not come from the classroom or a text book, but from a
child's heart. After returning to school after Super Storm Sandy, many discussions took place in
room C-34 in reference to how many of our students gave back to the community and to people in
need. I was truly touched and proud to be the teacher of such wonderful students.
I received an email in reference to volunteering around the area. There were several places
in Toms River in
which you could
sign up. I
mentioned it to the
students and we
narrowed it down
to volunteering at
Cattus Island.
Cattus Island is a
place near and
dear to the
students’ hearts. I
heard quiet
murmurs in the
classroom
regarding Cattus
Island as being
their first field trip
in elementary
school. On
December 8, 2012,
several students met at Cattus Island to help with clean up efforts. When we arrived, we had no
idea what we were in store to witness. The debris that we encountered left us laughing and
sometimes left us in awe as to how it could have washed up where it did. We carried wood that
was heavier than our bodies to an area safe for a dump truck to retrieve it.
We arrived at Cattus Island at 8:00 am and stopped our efforts at 3:00. Our clothing filthy,
our bodies tired, but our hearts happy. I did not hear one complaint, students didn’t ask what time
it was, nor did they ask for a break. When all was said and done, this will be one of the proudest
moments, being a teacher and watching my students give back, selflessly.

SCIENCE FAIR
Einstein would have been proud of the students who participated in the 2013 Toms
River Intermediate North Science Fair. On February 5th, students from sixth,
seventh, and eighth grades used the scientific method to find
answers to their questions; questions about chemistry, questions
about botany, questions about biology. Judges quizzed each
student about their projects. The judges consisted of teachers,
community members, and high school honors students. After much
discussion and deliberation the winners were chosen. Winners go
to the next round of competition in the Jersey Shore Science Fair
at Stockton State College on Saturday, March 16th.
CYCLE 74
Students from Cycle 74, along with their parents, Mrs. Cagliostro and Mrs. Fronzak,
came back to school on Thursday, March 14, 2013 to discuss the novel, Drums, Girls
and Dangerous Pie, by Jordan Sonnenblick. This book discusses how a family and in
particular, an 8th grade boy deal with a family member fighting cancer. Sounds like a
gut wrenching, sad book, right? While, Drums does have its sad moments, it’s also full
of hysterically funny lines. It is very relatable to many. Parents and students both
read the book at home, and then they came in to discuss it in a book club format.
This is the third book that the students and parents have read and discussed this
year. First, they read Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, then The
Ghost of Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, and now Drums. It is Mrs. Cagliostro’s hope
that through the reading and discussing of these books, parents and students can
open up the lines of communication and perhaps discuss something that they
haven’t before. Besides that, it’s just fun!

CYCLE 74 News
Cycle 74 did a great job presenting volcano
projects. The students made power points,
movies, cakes,
erupting models,
cupcakes, songs,
news broadcasts, and
wrote articles to go
along with their
research on their
volcanoes.
A Note from the Social Studies Supervisor
In terms of curriculum, for the first time in many years, each grade level in social studies is
covering a portion of history. 6th and 7th grade cover world history, from ancient civilizations
to the present. 7th and 8th grade cover U.S. history, from the times of exploration through the
Reconstruction period after the Civil War. Other social studies and civics-related content, such
as geography, the Constitution, and current events, are all taught as supplementary subjects
throughout the three years of middle school.
In addition to the new curriculum, as of 2012-2013, social studies teachers are now teaching
three specific types of writing in all classes throughout the year: open ended responses, quote
response writing, and the research process. All three forms serve two distinct purposes: First,
they improve all students' writing skills and reinforce the idea that writing is a cross-curricular
subject. Secondly, each is a test-prep activity for the current version of the NJASK and the
future version, the PARCC assessments.

Interact Club
The Interact Club has been very busy. In December the group
raised over $350 for families in need. Our big event in January was
the "Football Food Drive". We collected over 60 boxes of food and
donated it to the Peoples' Pantry, which helps survivors of
Hurricane Sandy, and The
Hope Center Food Pantry.
The 8th grade students are
beginning to plan our special
Read Across America event to
celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday.

PTO NEWS
Once again, our PTO is raising funds to
support our student activities! Every other
Friday, our PTO parents are kind enough to
visit the school bright and early, pop
approximately 150 bags of popcorn and have
them available to be sold during our lunch
periods! Our students eagerly await this sale
and we very much appreciate the continued
support of our PTO!

“Spring” to Success on the ASK!
Intermediate North students are well on their way to success
on the ASK due to the school-wide Spring to Mastery
program. In the months leading up to the early May state
test, all sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are given the
opportunity to become more familiar with common test
terminology, such as elaborate, analyze, and compare/
contrast, in all of their academic classrooms. Weekly terms
are introduced and defined in language arts, and then they
are reinforced throughout the week in each academic
classroom. Teachers use them regularly during discussions, on
tests and quizzes, and on written assignments. This strategy
goes a long way in making our students feel more
comfortable on both the math and language arts portions of
the ASK.
