Progress this year:

Membership - has continued to grow, reaching an all-time high of 206. This growth is a factor of
membership attraction and membership retention
Attraction - Generally new members join the Lakers for the following reasons:
 Introduced directly by another member
 Met friendly members at an event
 In terms of females, a strong female member presence
 Like the uniform
 Informative website
 Extensive training opportunities as found on the website
Retention – The following are factors in retaining members
 The uniform
 The communication quality and consistency – The Blue
Train Weekly
 The well organized and numerous training opportunities
 The Club “fun” events – Round the Lake, Summit Run, Glenelg 5-25 Run
 The Club social events – Presentation Night, Tour de Bakery, Christmas function
 The factionless nature of the Club – One Club, one leadership group
 The friendly/social nature of the members
 The encouragement of members irrespective of age, ability, gender, etc – a recognition of
individual member’s goals and abilities
 The low membership fees
The above represents a strong, successful marketing mix. The
challenge will be to maintain and, where possible, improve the
offer.

Training and Coaching – The Club provides quality coaching and
training opportunities and a wide range of training sessions to suit
all levels of personal development. Training requirements have
changed as a result of the increased number, type & timing of
events in which the members compete. A professional coach
(Nigel Pietsch) assists with coaching activity.

Women’s Development – Whilst the growth of female members in
relation to male members has stalled (unchanged compared with
an increase of 10 males) female members represent a very healthy
33% of total membership.

Sponsorship – Income from sponsorship has remained strong,
largely through the support of loyal members. The balance
between the number of Gold members and the cost of
sponsorship is a fine balance. The aim is to limit Gold sponsors to
12. Beyond that limit, the ability to offer value diminishes. The
preference is for cash sponsorships rather than products or
services. Achieving value from products and services is difficult.
Keep it simple.

Communications and Culture – The aim is to maintain a
communication system that facilitates awareness of Club
opportunities and policies and to foster values of respect,
honesty, humility and unity within the Club. We have a
Communications Policy, a Code of Conduct and a Bike Code.
 “The Blue Train Weekly” has been an outstanding success
in the hand of Anna Kelly. It has reduced the incidence of
emails to members, has increased the information,
improved control over communications and is a
professionally presented communication.
 Club uniforms continue to provide pride and identity for
Club members.
 The website upgrade has improved functionality,
presentation and is more user friendly – Thanks Dan Kelly

Social - Given the time spent training together only limited additional social functions are required.
Training sessions will endeavour to allow for low level activity for beginners and families. Social
functions have been very professionally organised and supported over the past year thanks to a very
committed Social Committee led by Sarah Calton. The very successful functions held this year
included:
o Christmas function
o Presentation night
o Tour de Bakery – won in a foodslide by Club Captain Nathan Warburton

Finance - Club finances sound and very well managed by our Treasurer (see Treasurer’s report)

Facilities – The Club currently lacks a “home base” or even a consistent location for Committee
meetings. Your President is currently endeavouring to source a suitable, consistently available
venue for Committee Meetings.

Organisational Structure – a review is required to more efficiently reflect members’ needs and the
changing environment
The Club is in very good shape. The challenge is to maintain the momentum
I would like to thank the Committee members for their
work during the year. In particular I would like to thank
those who are always putting their hands up when there
is an extra job to be done – Rick, Nathan, Sarah, Nigel,
Grant in particular. I would also like to recognise the
excellent work by Dan Kelly in revamping our website,
Anna Kelly’s professionally presented, consistent Blue
Train Weekly publication and Helen Shepherd for her
management of the difficult but important uniform
ordering and distribution task.
Once again the number and quality of nominations for the
2011/12 Committee indicates that we are well on the way
to another great year at the Lakers.
Finally, given that I am not offering myself for re-election as President I would like to thank those
stalwarts of the club who have contributed so much over my 7 years as President:







Club Captain, Nathan Warburton who has been with me for the entire journey. Many Club
decisions and ideas have emerged from our discussions and I have always appreciated his
sensible contribution
Grant Fergusson for wise counsel and for coaching/managing swim training so consistently for at
least the past decade
Rick Daley for his constant work for the Club and for, at times, keeping us amused
Nigel Pietsch who almost single handedly kept Triathlon SA afloat for a number of years and who
has contributed so much to our membership base
Sarah Calton who for the past 4 years has quietly, without fuss professionally managed all of our
social events
Kevin Fergusson, past President, an inspirational athlete who exemplifies all that is great about
the sport
Chris Mehaffey – the soul of the Club
Thank you – it has been an honour
Vincent Tremaine
