Le Fonds Défi des Leaders : pour donner encore plus d’impact aux
dons Leaders • The Leadership Challenge Grant: Adding greater
impact to Leaders’ donations
Grâce à la contribution exceptionnelle d’individus et d’organisations partenaires qui ont versé en
totalité 1 200 000 $, le Fonds Défi des Leaders a été mis sur pied afin de stimuler la participation
des donateurs. Il permet de jumeler tout nouveau don de 1 000 $ et plus, ainsi que toute
augmentation de 10 % et plus des donateurs Leaders et des Grands donateurs actuels, jusqu’à
concurrence du montant total du fonds. • Through the exceptional contributions of individuals
and partner organizations, who donated a total of $1.2 million, the Leadership Challenge Grant
fund was created to encourage the participation of donors. This fund matches all new donations
of $1,000 or more as well as all increases of 10% or more in donations from current Leaders and
Major Donors, up to the total value of the fund.

MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT DU Cercle des Grands donateurs
Bâtir des communautés d’entraide
Le Cercle des Grands donateurs s’agrandit d’année en année. Je me réjouis qu’il réunisse maintenant 345 membres, qui ont
contribué ensemble pour 10,15 millions $. Ces membres ont été recrutés par 58 bénévoles qui chaque année entrent en
contact avec un nombre de plus en plus grand de donateurs potentiels.
Dans les pages qui suivent, vous irez à leur rencontre. Ils ont tous des histoires différentes, mais ils ont en commun leur
soutien indéfectible à Centraide et partagent des valeurs d’entraide et d’appartenance à leur communauté.
À cet égard, je retiens ces mots de l’un d’entre eux : « Nous sommes tous humains et interreliés. Donner est un moyen simple
de préserver le sens de la communauté. » C’est une idée qui se concrétise au Cercle des Grands donateurs où le partage des
idées, des savoir-faire et de la connaissance entre les donateurs, les bénévoles, Centraide et les organismes concourt à une
action inventive et plus efficace.
Pour vous citer quelques exemples, je pense à un groupe de bénévoles qui veille depuis deux ans à développer le potentiel
des Très Grands donateurs (donateurs de 100 000 $ et plus). Ces derniers sont maintenant 27, alors qu’il y a deux ans, ils
étaient au nombre de 15.
Je songe aussi à un donateur qui, partageant son savoir avec Centraide, a contribué à la création d’une formation sur mesure
pour aider les dirigeants d’organismes à travailler de façon plus efficace dans leur milieu. Ou à d’autres qui soutiennent des
dirigeants d’organismes de leurs conseils ou d’un coup de main pour leur ouvrir des réseaux.
Je vois des représentants d’organismes s’adresser à un groupe de Grands donateurs pour leur expliquer comment leurs dons
sont utilisés pour solidifier le tissu social dans le Grand Montréal.
Je vois Centraide qui accueille toutes ces belles idées et initiatives pour en faire un tout. « Il y a de la suite dans les idées »,
pour reprendre les propos d’un bénévole de notre cabinet.
J’ajouterais que s’il y a de la suite dans les idées, c’est parce que ces idées sont portées par des gens qui sont interreliés.
Cela donne tout son sens au mot Cercle, mais illustre encore davantage l’idée de la communauté d’entraide que Centraide
s’emploie à bâtir.

Building caring communities
The Major Donors’ Circle grows year after year. I am overjoyed that it now has 345 members, who together have
contributed $10.15 million. These members were recruited by 58 volunteers, who each year contact an ever-growing pool of potential donors.
You will meet some of these volunteers in the following pages. They all have different stories, but they share an
unwavering support for Centraide along with the values of generosity and community spirit.
After reading what these people had to say, I was struck in particular by one statement: “As human beings, we are all
interconnected. Giving is a simple way to preserve a sense of community.” This idea materializes through the Major
Donors’ Circle, where the sharing of ideas, know-how and expertise among donors, volunteers, Centraide and agencies
leads to inventiveness and greater efficiency.
For example, a group of volunteers has been working for the last two years to develop the potential of Top Major Donors
(donors of $100,000 or more). There are now 27 of these donors, whereas two years ago there were 15.
Another donor also shared knowledge and thereby contributed to a training program tailored to agency directors to help
them work more effectively in their communities. Others still support agency directors with advice or a helping hand to
open the door to new networks.
Agency representatives give talks to groups of Major Donors to explain how their donations strengthen Greater
Montreal’s social fabric.
Centraide is the vessel that receives these wonderful ideas and initiatives and blends them into a whole. “Good ideas
beget good ideas,” as a volunteer on our cabinet once said.
I would add that if good ideas beget new ones, it is because they are devised by people who are interconnected, which gives
full meaning to the word Circle and further illustrates the idea of the caring community that Centraide strives to build.

créé La Fondation James Barriere Pour Les Nécessiteux.
Ils n’auraient pu me faire un cadeau plus inspirant. À ce
jour, la Fondation a amassé plus de 3 millions de dollars
grâce à son tournoi de golf qui célèbre cette année sa
23e édition. Je ressens beaucoup de compassion pour

Through his foundation, James Barriere, president of BGL
Brokerage, is involved in a great number of charitable
organizations that support the homeless, needy children, women

co-founder and a Board member of the Generations Foundation,
which helps improve the quality of life for persons of all ages and
particularly children.

Barriere Foundation For The Underprivileged. They couldn’t

date, the foundation raised over 3 million dollars through
its golf tournament which is celebrating its 23rd edition. I

are left with nothing and know for a fact that circumstances

Services d’emploi pour la jeunesse qui aide les jeunes Québécois
à trouver un emploi et à démarrer leur entreprise. Mme Peacock

sur le marché du travail à retourner à l’école en leur offrant un

Peacock Family Foundation
Strong advocates of initiatives allowing people to actively improve
their lives, John and Adrienne Peacock have been long-time donors to
Centraide. Through The Peacock Family Foundation they also support
Youth Employment Services (YES) a coaching program to help
young Quebecers find employment and start businesses. Moreover,
Ms. Peacock is involved with Project Chance, which helps single
working mothers with affordable housing as they go back to school.

chers il y a 25 ans. J’ai tout de suite su que c’était une
organisation à laquelle je pouvais faire confiance et qui
agissait pour une noble cause, car mes amis étaient très

Orphelin de père à quatre ans, Jean-Guy Senécal a appris très
tôt le sens de l’entraide. Cadet de six enfants, il a vu les plus
âgés soutenir leur mère ainsi que les plus jeunes et accorde une
importance fondamentale à la famille. Avec ses frères, il cultive
du soya à Boucherville, là où son père, jadis, cultivait la terre. Il
partage également avec ses fils, tous deux adeptes du ski alpin de
compétition, une passion pour le sport, ce qui lui a donné cœur à
s’investir comme administrateur et bénévole dans plusieurs OBNL
liés au monde sportif.

After losing his father at the age of four, Jean-Guy Senécal quickly
learned the meaning of mutual aid. The youngest of six children,
he saw how his older siblings supported their mother and the
younger ones and places tremendous importance on family.
He and his brothers currently grow soy in Boucherville, where
his father used to work the land. He shares a passion for skiing
with his sons, both of whom are competitive skiers, and invests
significant time as the director and a volunteer for many NPOs in
the field of competitive sports.

Hélène Bourgault et Jacques Parisé
Hélène Bourgault a grandi dans un milieu propice à l’entraide.
Des missionnaires dans sa famille et un père généreux lui
ont appris que donner allait de soi. Cadet de dix-huit enfants,
Jacques Parisé a vu son père cumuler plusieurs emplois pour
faire vivre les siens, tout en constatant que d’autres familles
n’avaient pas cette chance dans sa Gaspésie natale. Célébrant
trente ans de mariage, ce couple d’entrepreneurs a tout aussi
bien réussi en affaires. Au moment de vendre leur entreprise,
ils ont réaménagé leur portefeuille de dons. Parmi la vingtaine
de causes qu’ils appuient, ils ont été attirés par l’ampleur de
l’action que Centraide leur permet d’avoir.
Hélène Bourgault and Jacques Parisé
Hélène Bourgault grew up learning about the importance of
philanthropy, as the missionaries in her family and a generous
father taught her that giving was a given. As the youngest of
eighteen children, Jacques Parisé saw how his father worked
many jobs to feed his family while others were hit hard by
unemployment in his native Gaspésie. Celebrating thirty years
of marriage, this entrepreneurial couple also found success in
business. When they sold their company, they revamped their
giving portfolio. Among the nearly twenty causes that they
support, they are drawn in particular to the broad-ranging
impact that they achieve through Centraide.

Hélène Gagné intègre la générosité à toutes ses activités.
Particulièrement intéressée par la situation des femmes, la
santé mentale et l’itinérance, elle donne à Centraide depuis
plusieurs années et s’investit dans la campagne en milieu
de travail. Comme gestionnaire de portefeuille, elle guide
ses clients vers l’indépendance financière et y intègre la
planification de leurs dons; comme auteure d’ouvrages sur la
retraite, elle verse ses redevances à Centraide. Elle constate
que de plus en plus de femmes bâtissent leur propre richesse
et ont la capacité de donner des sommes importantes.

Hélène Gagné puts her stamp of generosity on any activity
she does. Particularly interested in the status of women,
mental health and homelessness, she has given to Centraide
for many years while taking an active part in workplace
campaigns. As a portfolio manager, she guides her clients
towards financial independence and helps them with planned
giving; as an author of books on retirement, she gives all of
her royalties to Centraide. She has noticed that more and
more women are building their own wealth and have the
ability to give substantially.

Monnex (aujourd’hui TD Assurance)
Grand amateur de golf, de vélo et de ski, la retraite n’a
nullement ralenti la cadence de Pierre E. Paquette. D’ailleurs,
il est encore fréquent de l’apercevoir en compagnie de ses
anciens collègues de Meloche Monnex où il avait été recruté
comme membre du cabinet de campagne de Centraide et
de ses comités d’allocation. M. Paquette se décrit comme
un « diplômé Meloche » par sa profession et un « diplômé
Centraide » par son engagement social et communautaire.
Impressionné par la façon dont Centraide tisse des liens entre
les gens de cultures et de moyens différents pour lutter contre
la pauvreté, il est fier de soutenir une cause qui a ouvert ses
horizons et détruit ses préjugés. « Centraide m’a fait voir notre
communauté sous l’angle de l’inclusion et je sais que mon don
a un grand impact auprès de mes concitoyens dans le besoin. »
Pierre E. Paquette, retired from Meloche
Monnex (now TD Insurance)
A golf, cycling and skiing enthusiast, Pierre E. Paquette has not
slowed down whatsoever since retiring. Today, he can still be
frequently spotted in the company of his former colleagues
from Meloche Monnex, where he was originally recruited to
volunteer on Centraide’s allocations committees and campaign
cabinet. Mr. Paquette describes himself as a `Meloche grad’
through his profession and a `Centraide grad’ through his
social and community involvement. Impressed with Centraide’s
approach to fighting poverty by creating ties between people
of different cultures and means, he is proud to support a
cause that has broadened his horizons and stripped away his
prejudices. “Centraide has enabled me to see our community
from the standpoint of inclusion, and I know that my donation
has a major impact on my fellow citizens in need.”

Sylvain Vincent a réalisé l’ampleur des besoins alors qu’il
siégeait au conseil d’administration d’un CLSC. Plus tard,
il a mené avec succès la campagne Centraide chez Ernst
& Young en misant sur la participation de chacun, selon
ses moyens. Comme dirigeant, il encourage aujourd’hui le
personnel à se joindre à lui en donnant du temps dans un
organisme. Avec son épouse, Johanne Paradis, ils ont créé une
fondation qui encourage la réussite scolaire par le biais de
l’art. Complémentaire à leurs intérêts particuliers, Centraide
demeure l’organisation qui investit efficacement dans la
communauté, accomplissant ce qu’ils ne parviendraient pas à
faire individuellement.

board member for a CLSC. Later, as the director of the Centraide

A TRIBUTE TO AN EXCEPTIONAL WOMAN
Succession Louise Lépine
Baccalauréat en main, diplômée en diététique de l’Université Laval, la jeune Louise Lépine choisit d’exercer son métier
dans le milieu communautaire. Sa carrière prendra véritablement son envol en 1973 lorsqu’elle se joint à l’équipe du
tout premier CLSC au Québec, dans Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Elle participe également à la création du Chic Resto Pop
dans le même quartier, un organisme d’insertion et d’économie sociale que Centraide finance depuis 1986.
Mme Lépine connaît une véritable notoriété publique durant les années 1970 et 1980. Pionnière dans le domaine
de la santé communautaire et vulgarisatrice hors pair, elle voit au mieux-être du plus grand nombre par l’entremise
de formations et d’entrevues accordées aux médias. En 2002, l’Ordre professionnel des diététistes du Québec lui
décernera d’ailleurs un prix d’excellence.
Dans son testament, elle a légué une importante somme à Centraide, sachant qu’elle contribuerait ainsi à briser
le cycle de la pauvreté en soutenant les familles, les jeunes et les enfants. Tout bien réfléchi, il ne pouvait en être
autrement pour cette femme aussi exceptionnelle que discrète qui a voué chaque instant de son existence à prendre
soin des autres.
Au-delà de la mort, Louise Lépine a choisi la vie.
Ms. Lépine gained a public profile in the 1970s and 1980s. A pioneer in the field of community health with an
incredible ability to communicate with a general audience, she enhanced the well-being of so many people through
training and interviews in the media. In 2002, the Ordre professionnel des diététistes du Québec bestowed her with
an award of excellence.
In her will, she bequeathed a significant amount to Centraide, knowing that in doing so she was helping to break the
cycle of poverty by supporting families, youth and children. This well-thought-out plan was a logical choice for this
exceptional and modest woman who dedicated every moment of her life to taking care of others.
Even in death, Louise Lépine chose life.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Université Laval, a young Louise Lépine decided to practise
her profession in the community. Her career really took off in 1973 when she joined the team of Quebec’s very first
CLSC in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, where she also helped create the Chic Resto Pop, a social integration and social
economy agency that Centraide has been funding since 1986.

l’avez encore fait en 2012 avec des dons qui totalisent près de 11 M$, dons bonifiés par le Fonds Défi des Leaders financé par
des individus et des organisations partenaires. Grâce à votre contribution, Centraide peut poursuivre sa mission : améliorer la
vie des plus vulnérables de notre société de façon durable.
L’apport des Leaders compte pour près de 20 % du total des sommes recueillies en campagne. C’est pourquoi nos donateurs
les plus fidèles, et certains de vous le sont depuis la création du Cercle en 1997, jouent un rôle si important. Nous avons
besoin d’irréductibles comme vous, qui savez que l’action de Centraide ne peut se déployer dans le temps sur la seule base
de dons ponctuels. Je vous remercie pour votre constance tout comme je remercie nos nouveaux Leaders qui, suivant votre
exemple, seront encouragés à contribuer au Cercle pour longtemps.
Un don renouvelé signifie qu’on peut investir à long terme dans la communauté, pour aider des familles, des jeunes ou des
aînés aux prises avec la pauvreté et l’exclusion. Comme président du Cercle des Leaders, je me suis donné le défi de recruter
et de fidéliser des donateurs prêts à s’engager sur une base continue. Pour atteindre ce but, je suis heureux de pouvoir
compter sur des gens aussi déterminés que moi à agrandir le Cercle et à bâtir une relève de donateurs Leaders. Avec eux et

2012, you made a difference yet again with donations amounting to nearly $11M—donations that were matched by
the Leadership Challenge Grant that is funded by individuals and partner organizations. Thanks to your contribution,
Centraide can continue to fulfill its mission to make lasting improvements in the lives of our society’s most vulnerable.
Leadership contributions represent close to 20% of Centraide’s total campaign result. This is why our most loyal donors—

Si John Caldwell, enseignant à la retraite, a contribué à Centraide dans

Retired teacher John Caldwell used to give to Centraide at his work
and continues to give because the difficulties that surround us are very
real. All around us, in the metro and in public places, we see people in
need. Instead of supporting individual causes, Mr. Caldwell dedicates a
substantial amount to Centraide because he knows he is helping people in
his own neighbourhood. He also appreciates how efficient Centraide is in
administrating its donations.

When he arrived at Borden Ladner Gervais, lawyer Simonwas impressed by this firm’s tradition of

Decidedly impressed by everything that Centraide-supported
agencies and projects accomplish, Carl Desrosiers, Chief

personnes âgées en situation difficile inspire particulièrement
François Gentes, chef de service, Compte client chez
Rolls-Royce Canada et son épouse ISABELLE LEGAULT. C’est
pour eux qu’ils ont choisi de s’engager. En plus de faire une
contribution financière à Centraide, M. Gentes assure également
l’organisation des campagnes dans son milieu de travail. Le
niveau de contribution de Centraide au sein des organismes et
la rigueur avec laquelle les dons sont redistribués expliquent sa
fidélité à la cause.
Knowing that Centraide reaches children, families and seniors in
difficult situations is what has particularly inspired François
Gentes, Customer Business Manager for Rolls-Royce Canada,
and his spouse, ISABELLE LEGAULT. It is for these vulnerable
people that this couple chose to get involved. In addition to
making a financial contribution to Centraide, Mr. Gentes also
organizes campaigns at his workplace. Centraide’s incredible
assistance to agencies and the great care it takes in redistributing
money are the reasons he is so loyal to the cause.

Grand Montréal. Inspiré par l’impact tangible des organismes dans
la vie des personnes en situation de précarité et par le dévouement
des bénévoles et la générosité des donateurs, M. Gingras ne
manque pas de motivations pour rallier son réseau professionnel à
la cause.
A committed donor, Bruno Gingras, Vice-President of Human
Resources at Hydro-Québec, decided to become involved with
Centraide’s campaign cabinet with other leaders from various
economic activity sectors in Greater Montreal. Inspired by
agencies’ tangible impact in the lives of vulnerable people and
by the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donors,
Mr. Gingras does not lack motivation to rally his professional

utilisation des produits, Groupe Investors, est encore étudiante
lorsque son père lui demande de recueillir des dons pour
Centraide. Depuis, elle en sait beaucoup plus sur Centraide. Elle
se considère privilégiée et appuie le vaste réseau d’organismes de
Centraide pour aider ceux qui n’ont personne sur qui compter. En
plus de faire un don Leader, elle s’implique comme directrice de
campagne pour inciter ses collègues à contribuer. Car elle estime
que donner ne suffit pas : il faut en parler autour de soi.
Nathalie Godbout, Director of Product Utilization and
Planning for the Investors Group, was still in school when her father
asked her to collect donations for Centraide. Since then, she has
come to learn much more about Centraide. She considers herself
privileged and supports Centraide’s vast network to help those with
no one to turn to. In addition to making a Leadership donation,
she is involved as a campaign director to encourage her colleagues
to contribute. For her, giving is not enough: you have to let people
know why you give too.

Centraide fut l’occasion de réaliser l’impact extraordinaire du milieu

d’autant plus qu’il se sent vraiment choyé par la vie.
If Patrick Tanguay were ever to experience hardship,
he would be reassured knowing that donors like him have
contributed to Centraide. For this Production Foreman at Velan,
an agency tour when he was a volunteer canvasser for the
Centraide campaign helped him grasp the extraordinary impact
that community initiatives have on people’s lives. He is happy to

Inspired by her mother, Isabelle Nadia Tremblay likes
giving people hope. For this Senior Counsel, Corporate Law
Department at Great West – London Life – Canada-Life, helping
her vulnerable fellow citizens is a natural action. Instead of
giving to a multitude of causes, she chose to make a Leadership

As Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Chief Legal Officer
for Resolute Forest Products, Jacques P. Vachon is very familiar
with Centraide, as his department coordinates the company’s
annual campaign. When it comes to community investment, he
trusts the expertise of Centraide staff and volunteers to allocate
donations according to the needs of each neighbourhood and
territory in Greater Montreal. Mr. Vachon became a donor after
hearing an inspiring presentation by then Centraide President and
Executive Director Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire, and the passion of
her message has remained a vivid memory for him.
