A MAN abducted from his

Melusi Zungu (46) was
discovered covered in bruises
and wounds by family members in the bush in the Enqatheni area.
He was rushed to the hospi-

Zulu King condemns violent
behaviour and vandalism
Mia Moorcroft
HIS Majesty King Zwelithini
Zulu has strongly condemned
the acts of violence, destruction
of public property and human
killings.
The King conveyed this strong
message in a statement read
by his son, Prince Nhlanganiso
Zulu, during the uThungulu
Community Foundation annual general meeting and grant
handover in Richards Bay on
Thursday.
With many reports of violence
recently making headlines,
including the vandalism of
government properties such as
community halls and schools,
His Royal Highness questioned
the sanity of these perpetrators.
‘Destruction of property in
some parts of the country is
something one can expect of a
completely disorganised mind.
The same thing applies to the
killing of other people for no
good reason other than for dirty
politics,’ said the King.
‘How can a normal person
destroy a school that should be
used to educate innocent children and generations to come?’

REVITALISATION of the township economy in uMhlathuze
has been identified as one of
the keys to reviving growth in
the region.
Delivering his State of the
City address at the eSikhaleni
FET sports fields on Saturday, Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo
highlighted the municipality’s
plans to implement what
they branded as Township
Economy Revitalisation and
Modernisation
Initiatives in
eSikhaleni,
eNseleni,
Ngwelezane and Vulindlela.
‘As approved by Council,
the initiatives will focus on
identifying, auditing and developing key growth sectors
within the townships to allow
for absorption of SMMES,
skilled, semi-skilled and
unskilled labour force into
formal and informal economy.
‘The sectors will include
transport, urban agriculture,
creative industries such as
arts and fashion, cultural
heritage tourism, food and
beverage retail, light manufacturing and artisanal
industries, eventing and
catering, leisure, lodging and health and
medicine.
‘As part of the
Vukuphile Learnership Programme,
we have allocated R10-million
worth of construction
City of
uMhlathuze

Mduduzi

projects directly to SMMEs
without opening bidding to
other contractors and more
will be allocated next financial
year.’
He added the municipality has in the past year been
engaging with township
entrepreneurs to improve representation of small business
owners and properly prepare
for effective strategies to
strengthen the rural economy.
In addition, rural economic
nodes such as Mevamhlophe,
Mashinini, Ndabayakhe, Port
Durnford, Nhlenganyuke and
Chibini will be prioritised.
‘We are progressively completing the feasibility plans for
key nodes, evaluating their
potential commercial viability
and exploring the opportunity
to mobilise partnerships with
the private sector.
‘We have also exploited the
possibilities of availing funding for infrastructure development and promoting rural
economic connectivity.
‘The plans will be completed
and ready for implementation
in 2019.’
Wellington Makwakwa
nities to learn to use dialogue
to settle their differences.
‘Violent reactions to state of
affairs will not achieve anything.
We must learn to negotiate and
to have respect for one another.
As your King, you should never
forget that I love all of you, except when you start killing one
another.’
The King also encouraged
parents to set a good example
and encourage children to refrain from substance and drug
abuse.
‘The primary aim of every local
community should be to create
jobs for the high number of
unemployed young people,’
The King also pleaded with
private and public sectors to
partner with community organisations, and encouraged grants
beneficiaries who received
funds from the foundation, to
manage their money wisely.
‘I wish organisations that
today received grants from us
every success in their commitment to development. You
are handling public funds, and
should at all times not forget
that other people expect you
to treat them fairly,’ the King
concluded.
Family searches for missing relative
ZR175514-16-D
A RICHARDS Bay mother,
Adri Pieterse, is desperately
searching for her daughter,
Maritza (34), who was last
seen on 27 March.
A missing persons docket
has been opened at the
Richards Bay SAPS and
Pieterse says she has visited all the mortuaries and
Ngwelezana Hospital in a
desperate attempt to find
her daughter or rule out the
possibility of her being deceased.
Maritza was often seen
walking along the John Ross
Parkway from Arboretum to
Meerensee, which she did on
a daily basis.
‘While she has not been
living with us, she is still my
daughter and the mother
of my grandson and we are
desperate to locate her.
‘She sometimes calls
herself Annie, has medium
brown hair, brown/green eyes
and has a tattoo on her left
upper arm of a heart with an
arrow.
‘The last time she was seen
she was wearing blue denim
jeans and an over-sized blue
T-shirt.’
Anyone with information
can contact Adri on 035

‘This day

Rachelle Breed
IN a time when the South
African Police Service faces
enormous challenges on all
fronts, Richards Bay SAPS
members have joined hands
to put differences aside and
pray for unity and leadership.
On Thursday, worship
music, prayer and preaching sounded from the Judea
Harvest tent pitched on the
grounds as policemen and
-women, community volunteers and pastors lifted their
hands to God.
A panel of pastors spoke
on topics such as fear, leadership, courage, suicide and
grief, marital problems, alcohol dependency and unity
despite differences.
With limited manpower and
resources, massive workloads, little to no debriefing, changes in leadership
and tight financial times,
members are struggling with
personal challenges and tensions in the workplace.
The pastors encouraged
and uplifted their new
‘congregation’ and also laid
hands on Brigadier Brenda
Mgenge, who is tasked with
steering the ship through the
rough waters.
Pastor Mbhamali said there
will always be differences
between people, but that
the same God, the same
community and the same
purpose,’ one police
member said.

Leap of faith for Lutheran family
Dave Savides
LOOKING ahead with heavy hearts
but looking back with warmth and
gratitude, the Lutheran Church congregation in Birdswood bids farewell on
Friday to Rev Stephan Gensicke and
his family.
A special service was held in June
when some 500 members and friends
slaughtered a cow and said the official
‘goodbye’ to the much loved minister.
‘It must be one of the most difficult
decisions we have taken as a family,
but it’s time to say good-bye, salani
kahle and auf wiedersehen,’ said Stephan.
‘You would think that going back to
Germany would be easy, because we
have lived there and it supposedly is
our home.
‘But it is not the case. Our children
only know South Africa as their home
and Steffi and I have long fallen in love
with this country and its people, and it
has been our home for 12 good years.
‘We are going to be foreigners in a
country we previously called home!
‘We love this country, with its diversity in language and people, with its
problems and quirks and with its huge
potential and our vibrant church.
‘We are leaving, because part of our
family lives in Germany and we see the
need to be close to them in difficult
times.
‘We also want our children to experience the other part of their heritage,
but we are leaving with a heavy heart
- you are just losing one family, we are
losing many more!
‘I’ve learned so much more than I
have taught. I have gained so much
more than I have given. I have experienced so much more than I have
shown others.
‘And I will forever be indebted to
this country, our church and so many
friends and congregants,’ said Rev
Gensicke.

SADTU warns teachers to behave
Steven Makhanya
THE KZN SADTU Provincial General
Council (PGC) delegates gathered at
Meet Mekaar Resorts on Friday and Saturday to talk about the challenges facing
education in the province.
Addressing them, Provincial Chairperson Phumlani Duma appealed to the
teachers to refrain from exposing themselves to and from having sexual relations with school children.
‘Respect yourself, respect
your profession,’ Duma
stressed.
Duma further requested the teachers
not to miss classes.
‘Are you teaching
from the heart?’ he
asked.
He warned those
teachers who
kill others for
teaching positions, saying the
education profession is not
an organisation for hiding
criminals.
‘The
widespread
factional
killings of
teachers

MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane on Friday

must stop. The police must arrest them,’
said Duma.
He further appealed to SADTU members not to take bribes from teachers
during job interviews.
Welcoming the new Education MEC
Mthandeni Dlungwane, Duma promised
to support his department, and to forge a
good working relationship with him.
He further appealed to the government
to fight the scourge of racism doing
rounds on social media and other forums
in the country.
Condemning the recent spate of the
burning of community facilities during
protest marches, Duma said people must
learn to manage their anger.
The muted Mandarin being taught in
government schools around the country
was also criticised.
‘The Chinese don’t speak or learn our
African languages; so why does the government want our children to be taught
the Chinese language?’ Duma queried.
The teachers who still mete out corporal punishment were requested to stop
beating children, stressing that SADTU
distances itself from those who do this.
SADTU KZN Provincial Chairperson Phumlani Duma warned all teachers to stop having any
form of sexual relationship with their pupils

WHEN voters head
for the polls on the
3 August for the
2016 Local Government Elections they
will have to cast their
ballots in the voting
district where they
are registered.
If a voter is outside
their district on election day, they will not
be eligible to vote.
The Independent
Electoral Commission (IEC) will be
using an e-ziskan
machine on election
day, which is programmed to prevent
registration of voters
on election day.
The entire voters’
roll is electronically loaded on the
e-ziskan and the
voter’s identity document will be scanned
to determine if and
where the voter is
registered.
If the e-ziskan fails
to operate, the hard
copy of the voters’ roll is the final
verification method
ensuring the voter

T
his week we go Down
Under to the land of Oz!
Australia is known for
having all sorts of animals that
are unique and interesting.
We say hi this week to our
friend the kangaroo, which
a member of the marsupial
family.
There are four species
of kangaroo and the Red
Kangaroo, the largest of them
all, can reach speeds of
65km/h - faster than the fastest
race horse.
Kangaroos hop to get where
they want to go, which is
considered the most energy
efficient way of moving
around.
While on land, they can only
move their powerful back
legs together but when in
water they can kick them
independently to swim.
Some kangaroos can jump up
to three metres high (as high as
the roof of your house)
A female kangaroo is called
a doe while the male is called a
buck and the baby, a joey.
A baby kangaroo, called a joey,
inside his mommy’s pouch
A joey stays in its mother’s
pouch for only 10 months,
learning to find food and
survive.
A group of kangaroos is called
a mob and they usually consist
of around
20 to 25
kangaroos
that can
each live to
be up to 25
years old.
Until next
week kids!

aravans used to be
very popular back in
the 60s, 70s and 80s.
To have one parked
in your yard, covered
with a tarp until the
next pilgrimage to the
holy land of communal
ablution blocks, or for
when the family from
Danville visits, was
considered a sign of
affluence.
But then things
changed.
Like Grasshopper
shoes, caravans became
unfashionable, and being
seen towing one meant
that you were a bit of a
pleb.
Never mind that
Grasshoppers were the
most comfortable shoes
since shoes, and that a
caravan allows you to
holiday wherever you
please.
But come 1990, your
wife decided that
caravans were not cool.
For the next 30 years,
only an uber-chic cottage
with unrestricted sea

views of Camps Bay
would do to keep up with
the Joneses.
That the cost of each
day’s stay, with breakfast
at Cat-on-the-Dock
and dinner at the Dirty
Sanshez, could buy a sixsleeper Jurgens, did not
matter.
But like we all
know, things are
happening in Mzansi.
Times have changed
It’s not just the Van der
Merwes and Bothas who
can keep up with the
Joneses, but also the
Buthelezis and Khumalos,
and the Moekwenas and
Ramaphosas.
And let’s not forget
about Lovemore Sibanda
who decided that SA is
the Promised Land.
So, Paradise Villa in
Camps Bay, or any posh
bay for that matter, has
become like the Tower of
Babel.
And when you are on
holiday you don’t even
want to hear your own
kids, never mind 50 000
others all shouting at the
same time.
To get some peace and
quiet once a year, people
are buying caravans
again.
Grasshoppers though,
will unfortunately never
make a comeback.
Thank heavens that
during that time, in which
everyone was living la
Vida Loca in Poshville, all
the caravan parks were
not lost in land claims
or turned into low cost
housing developments.
That would’ve been
really ironic.
Mazda logs up sales
in South Africa
MAZDA SA has revealed
that it sold 9 066 units on
the local market in 2015,
which represents year-onyear growth of some 84%.
The local arm of the
Japanese auto maker
says the first six months of
2016 have seen yet more
progress, with 6 312 units
already sold, despite a
shrinking market.
This is an average of 1

ping 93% year-on-year.
Together with the Mazda3, the CX-5 makes up
55% of the auto maker’s
local sales volume.
The Mazda2 and CX-3,
meanwhile, form just under
40% of volume, which
sees the BT-50 bakkie
accounting for just 6% of
total sales year-to-date
(compared to 48% back in
2014).
The Mazda brand was officially re-introduced to the
SA market in October 2014
after splitting from Ford.
New vehicles to look out
for from Mazda are the
all-new BT-50, which is due
before the end of the year,
and the Mazda 3 facelift.

THE Automobile Association
(AA) on Friday
roundly condemned failure
of authorities to
implement the
long-awaited
AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences)
system.
Among others, AARTO would
provide for a points demerit system
which punishes repeated violations
by suspending or cancelling a motorist’s driving licence.
It would also separate an ‘infringement’ as a traffic violation which
can be dealt with administratively
(such as speeding or talking on
your cellphone while driving), as
opposed to a criminal offence such
as drunk driving, which requires a
court appearance.
‘Since 1998 a lot of time, effort,
and money has gone into developing and implementing AARTO.
‘Despite this, we still don’t have a
workable system, which is lamentable,’ the AA noted.
‘A key objective for the implementation of AARTO was to effect behavioural change among drivers to
curb the growing number of deaths
on our roads.
‘According to the Road Traffic
Management Corporation (RTMC),
approximately 13 000 people died
on the country’s roads last year
alone.
‘We believe that action needs to
be taken sooner, rather than later to
deal with this crisis.
‘However, the implementation of
this system has again been delayed
- a delay that is doing more harm
than good.’
Points system
Originally the system was to be
implemented in 2011. A new date
of April 2012 was suggested, but
again this was delayed and a revised date of April 2016 has also
come and gone.
The Road Traffic Infringement
Agency (RTIA) was created specifically to roll out and administer
AARTO.
According to the RTIA, the system
will mean drivers accumulate points
for infringements they commit.
Every person starts with 0 points,
and the maximum permissible number of points is 12, hence a person
is allowed to drive until he/she has
12 points.
Every point exceeding 12 results
in a three-month suspension of the
licence.
One point is reduced every three
months if no further contraventions
occur.
A licence is cancelled when it has
been suspended for the third time.

ZULULANDER Gary Heath earned the top
honours at the annual 21 Species Fishing
Festival hosted by the Meerensee Boat
Club over the weekend.
Heath landed a 9.3kg snoek which gave
him the title and bragging rights for 2016.
Anglers from all over the country made the
trip to Zululand to chase the big catches.
Poor weather conditions made things difficult
and good catches were hard to come by.
Only a handful of decent fish were
weighed.
‘This competition

Meerensee Boat Club

Sanele Shabalala steams out of the culvert
THIS year’s Buildit Kwambo Lion MTB race saw a
field of 405 riders taking on the mud and rain
around KwaMbonambi for
a gruelling 50 and 25km
race on Sunday.
The organisers of the
race, the third in the
Bell Big Five Challenge,
closed the second 25km
loop of the 50km route
owing to the bad conditions in the area.
This meant that the
50km riders had to
complete the 25km route
twice.
Apart from a few bruised
egos, no injuries were
reported.
The old school will
remember the ‘vasbyt’
days and Sunday’s race
needed that extra bit of
guts to pull one through.
It was not so much the
track that was an issue, it
was the rain which turned
the route into mud and in
places even streams.
But then that is what
mountain biking is all
about.
One rider, Craig Hallett
from Hillcrest, posted a
comment on his Facebook page saying, ‘By
far the hardest race I
have done.
‘All I wanted to do is
Larry and Hedemarie Bentley
Rain, mud
and ‘vasbyt’
quit and give up, but at
the end of the day it’s not
