9 READING Tim’s problem

a) Tim is telling Lucy about a problem. Read about the problem.
I’ve got a friend in the next village. His name is
Benny. His birthday is on Thursday and I’ve got an
invitation for his party. I would really like to go
because after the party there’s a junior disco. But
there’s a problem. It isn’t easy to get to Benny’s
house. His parents have a nice house with a big
garden, but it’s at the end of the village. I’ll have to
go there by bus, because my dad can’t take me on
that day, and there aren’t many buses to the village.
I’ll have to come home by bus because my dad won’t
be in Bristol. He’ll be in London.
And there’s another problem. The last bus from
Benny’s village goes at 9.30, and the junior disco
won’t finish before 10 o’clock. If I stay till the end, I
won’t get the last bus. And I’ll have to walk to the
bus alone, and it will be dark. Mum doesn’t think
that’s a good idea. All Benny’s friends want to stay
till the end of the disco because they don’t live far
away. Benny says I can stay the night at his house,
but how will I get to school the next morning? I’ll
have to get up very early. If I don’t get the bus, I’ll get to school too late for the first lesson. My French
teacher will be cross again, and I’ll have to do extra homework. Then my friends will go to the cinema
without me. I don’t know what to do.

Where do squirrels live?
Most squirrels live in woods because there are
many places to hide.
How long do squirrels live?
They can live as long as four or five years. Foxes
and cats are their biggest enemies.
Do they sleep through the winter?
Many people think squirrels sleep through the
winter, like hedgehogs. They don’t like cold,
windy and rainy weather, but they have to find
food every day, in winter too.

How many squirrels are there in the UK?
Today there are about 160,000 red squirrels. Most
of them are in Scotland and there are about
30,000 in England.
There were always red squirrels in England. Now
there are many more grey squirrels in the UK
than red quirrels. The grey squirrel first came to
England from America in 1876. There are over
two million grey squirrels in England alone. For
one red squirrel there are now 66 grey squirrels.
Squirrel babies
A squirrel mother usually has three babies in the
spring, and sometimes again in June or July, if
there is enough food. The babies have no teeth
and no hair and they can’t see, but after about
seven weeks, they look like their parents.

some squirrels. If they hear you, they’ll run away. There’s a programme on TV tonight about
squirrels.
Maybe we’ll see a deer. I saw one in these woods last year. Look, there’s a big bird in that tree on
the right. What is it, Dad?
It’s a woodpecker, stupid! But you think it’s a parrot or a budgie, right?
Don’t be rude, Tim. Do you know why woodpeckers make holes in trees?
To sleep in? Or to put their food in?
Wrong! They lay their eggs in the holes. Right, Dad?
Right, Becky. Now, walk slowly and listen carefully. Maybe we’ll see a deer or a fox. But if they see
us, they’ll run. A red fox can easily run 30 miles an hour. Some foxes come into the cities at night
because they need food. Foxes eat a lot of different things, small animals like mice and moles, but
fruit too.
And chickens. But they aren’t dangerous for cats, so a fox won’t eat Barnabas.
Look! I can see a red squirrel over there. At the top of that tree. Can you see it?
It’s a grey squirrel. You need glasses! What about frogs? Frogs are cool.
I don’t like frogs. They’re cold and horrible. I like sweet animals like deer and hedgehogs.
But frogs are more fun. Look, there’s some water. Maybe there are some frogs in it. If there are, I’ll
take two home and put them in a fish bowl.
You can’t keep frogs in a fish bowl. Frogs need lots of room.
Well, then I’ll put them on your bed.
