Have you been slimed? Haunted Aquarium creeps back for two special nights featuring
mysterious exhibits and science experiments with an ocean theme. Mark your calendar for
spooks and thrills this Halloween.
Fall is also back-to-school time, and we encourage parents and educators to ask for the School
Programs catalog on your next visit, or view programs online. We have a wide range of K--12
science classes on and off site, as well as teacher professional development. Thank you all so
much for your support. We look forward to sharing the mystery and beauty of nature with you in
our public and school programs this Fall, and all year long.

The oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico affected me profoundly. It really made me stop and

something as catastrophic as the oil leak in the Gulf happens, it reinforces the fragility of our
environment. It has also emphasized the need to balance our way of life and our environment.
Next summer we are opening a new exhibit called Boundless Energy, which is being designed
with support from Sempra Energy and Union Bank. This fun and exciting exhibit is all about
renewable energy from sun, wind, and waves. It is educational and interactive and designed to
appeal to kids of all ages. It demonstrates exciting ways in which we can harness and use natural
energy with minimal pollution to our environment. Please join us in a future of greener energy, and
contact me if you are interested in learning more about ways you can help Boundless Energy.

SNORKEL ADVENTURES
September 22 & 23: 6-8:30 p.m.
Walk along the Ellen Browning Scripps
Memorial Pier, normally closed to the public,
on an exclusive moonlit tour with a Scripps
naturalist. Participants will learn about the
history of Scripps Oceanography and current
research projects, while collecting plankton,
performing experiments, and exploring the
nocturnal habits of marine life. Ages 9+
(ages 9–13 must be accompanied by a
paid adult).

snorkeling experience is recommended.

Yuri Fialko, geoscientist
Southern California hosts a number of active
faults. Over the last 20 years, our region
has become the most seismically active
area in the Western states, with magnitude
7 or greater events occurring along the (in)
famous San Andreas fault. Join Yuri Fialko
as he discusses what we know about earthquakes, and the slow tectonic deformation
that causes them, using modern space technologies.
