The Corner
SouthWest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce
Serving All of South West Mobile County
Luncheon June 3rd
Guest Speaker: Judith Adams
President’s Message Pg. 1
June 2015
“In Step With Progress”
Message from the President
Greetings from the Chamber!
Thanks to everyone who attended our last month's
Chamber meeting. We had open forum with business
representatives and community members who shared
their current business practices, community interests,
and vision for growth. A special thanks to Coach Collier
for giving us highlights of the Theodore High School
Athletic Program. We anticipate a very informative
Business Networking Luncheon this month, June 6th,
with Judith Adams of Alabama State Port Authority as
our guest speaker. We encourage you to come out and
hear what she has to say about "The Port and What our
Future Holds".
Vacation season is here and we all anticipate spending time with family and getting a
little rest and relaxation. As you search ideas for entertaining the kids, make plans to
attend our Annual Kids Day on July 25th, held at the Chamber. It's a fun event you
don't want to miss.
Have an enjoyable Father’s Day.

Board of Director
Kay Peace, At an early age in high school I committed
to friends that I would run for President of Student
Council. Little did I know that I would win and instantly
fall in love with volunteering and the fulfillment I received
from a kind gesture and learning that the little things you
do play a big part in another person’s life.
My involvement with the Chamber started back in the
late 80’s and encompassed my love for volunteer work,
giving back and making a difference in our community. I
have and currently serve as secretary, chaired just about
every committee from our Christmas parade to hiding hundreds of Easter eggs.
I served as President in 1993, was chosen as Citizen of the Year, started the
Spirit Award, the Top Ten Student Breakfast, and even once wore a chicken
suit at the Annual Easter Egg Hunt!
Volunteering did not stop at the Chamber but fueled the fire to pay it forward
through the American Business Women’s Association, American Cancer
Society, Toys for Tots, and Beta Sigma Phi Eta Omega Chapter.
At my current job, I started a program called Employees Give Back and since
its inception in 2001, we have donated company-wide in excess of $1,000,000
to local and statewide organizations to include, local food pantries, Sav-A-Life,
Cerebral Palsy, Child Advocacy Center, Wilmer Hall, Mission Work, and many
more.
On a personal note, I come from a large family with parents that instilled love,
strength and always be there for one another. My nieces and nephews have
always been my children from the time they were born to adulthood. Now I step
back and admire as they become amazing parents with their own children and
take pride knowing that I had a tiny part in their upbringing. In 2009, I met my
soulmate celebrating our 5th anniversary this June. We share the same ideas,
values, and the love of our families.

Children's Miracle Network (C.M.N.) hosted a Walmart Kickoff celebration in
Birmingham, AL on Thursday, April 16th for Walmart employees all over the state of
Alabama. Walmart is one of the biggest supporters for C.M.N. They selected one
thousand associates from across the state of Alabama to attend this event. Della Wade,
Paula Vison and Donna Christian were chosen from the Tillman’s Corner Walmart to
represent their efforts. The money they raise helps so many. Della said, “she feels very
honored to have been a part of the celebration.” Last year the Tillman’s Corner Walmart
alone raised $11,063 for Children’s Miracle Network. Walmart stores in Alabama
combined raised 1.3 million dollars. Thank you to everyone who donated to C.M.N. We
look forward to raising more funds next year.

This year’s GED Graduation was one of the smallest classes ever - Small but Mighty.
They took on the challenge of the new 2014 GED Test which was more expensive and more
rigorous and passed.
The test format went from being paper driven to being computer driven and requires more
depth of knowledge. Also, the test went from five parts to four parts, but test takers no
longer have to take all subjects at once. They can study and take one subject at a time.
The test is available in English as well as Spanish. As a student enrolled in the Bishop
State Adult Education Program, scholarships are available for free GED Ready Practice
Tests. Scholarships are also available to help defray the cost for the GED Test once
students are academically ready and have met attendance requirements.
Although the graduating class was small this year, their success proves that it can be
done! Tillman’s Corner Community Center has free GED classes on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons. Help us get the word out. They can start today! Getting a GED
changes lives for the better forever and opens door to a brighter future. We’d love to see
more success stories marching across that stage next year!

Happy Father's Day to all Dads. Dads don't always come to us in
traditional ways so remember to say thanks to those men in your life
that have meant the world to you. Some are Mentors, some are Coaches
some are Teachers and even Friends, but Fathers are often forgotten in
society. Take time to recognize your Father and do something nice to
show your love to him throughout the Month of June.
