Companion Titles
The bandoneon is a type of concertina which has been an essential
part of traditional tango ensembles for the past century. Award-winning
Italian composer Roberto Di Marino explores the breathtakingly
virtuoso and sensual qualities of this distinctive instrument in his
Concerto, with its driving syncopated rhythms and melodies which
tug at the heartstrings. Ástor Piazzolla singlehandedly created
the ‘nuevo tango’ genre, and his haunting Oblivion is one of his
most haunting creations in this style. He described the Five Tango
Sensations as “a musical farewell to life”.
Sales Points • Tango music and the bandoneon are hugely popular,
and Roberto Di Marino rewards our expectations with his brand new
Concerto for Bandoneon and String Orchestra. This impressive
work builds on the romantic idiom of Ástor Piazzolla, spectacularly
extending the virtuoso boundaries of the solo instrument over exciting
rhythms and heartwarming harmonies. Coupling this with some of
Piazzolla’s most evocative music is a natural choice which will add
to the attraction of this release, while acclaimed soloist Cesare
Chiacchiaretta is universally admired amongst fellow musicians and
audiences as a widely travelled ambassador for his instrument.

Cesare Chiacchiaretta devoted himself to the study of the accordion
at a very young age, later taking up the bandoneon. He has been
awarded many prizes at important national and international
competitions, such as the first prize at the 1993 Città di Castelfi
dardo international competition. He is currently an accordion teacher
at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma. Miran Vaupotić is quickly
establishing himself as a sought after young artist. Currently, he
is Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian Symphony Orchestra
Prokofiev in Moscow, Russia, and Artistic Director of newly founded
Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra in Philadelphia, USA. He was
declared Artist of the Year 2008 by the International Art Society &
Academy.

Antoni Wit, one of the most highly regarded Polish conductors,
studied conducting with Henryk Czyz at the Academy of Music in
Kraków. He then continued his musical studies with Nadia Boulanger
in Paris. After winning second prize in the International Herbert von
Karajan Conducting Competition in Berlin (1971), he became an
assistant conductor to the patron of that competition. From 2002
to 2013 Antoni Wit was the managing and artistic director of the
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. He has made over
200 records, including an acclaimed release for Naxos of the piano
concertos of Prokofiev, awarded the Diapason d’Or and Grand Prix
du Disque de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque. In 2012 he received a
GRAMMY® Award for Penderecki’s Fonogrammi, Horn Concerto and
Partita (8.572482). Antoni Wit is professor at the Fryderyk Chopin
University of Music in Warsaw.
Antonín Dvořák’s huge popularity in England was built largely on the
success of his Stabat Mater, which he had conducted there in 1884
and 1885. It was well suited to the country’s choral traditions and led
eventually to a commission for a Requiem, which was premièred in
Birmingham in 1891. Written in ten months during tours to Russia,
England and Germany, its success was immediate. Sitting closer to
the tradition of Cherubini than Verdi, its tone is compassionate and
reflective, devoid of unnecessary drama, and movingly crafted with
great sophistication.
© Dominik Skurzak
Sales Points • Dvořák's Requiem is a work of humanity and
compassion and has attracted a large number of recordings. There is
the classic Ančerl-directed one, and others conducted by Neumann,
Sawallisch and Kertesz have long dominated the catalog since the
1960s and 70s onwards. Conductor Antoni Wit is a Naxos regular
and a renowned interpreter of Slavic music - in the past he has also
recorded Dvořák - the Piano Concerto on 8.550896 and the Czech
Suite coupled with Hero's Song on 8.553005.

Zdeněk FIBICH (1850–1900)
Orchestral Works, Vol. 4
Recordings
Czech National Symphony Orchestra • Marek Štilec
This fourth volume in the first complete recording of the orchestral
works of Zdeněk Fibich features shorter orchestral works and
occasional pieces for theatre projects. They include the evocative
overture A Night at Karlštejn Castle, the Mendelssohnian overture to
the incidental music for The Jew of Prague, as well as the witty and
elegant ballet music from the opera Hedy. Specially prepared from
original sources for this recording by Marek Štilec, the four Tableaux
vivants (‘staged pictures’) reflect a 19th-century Central European
fashion for staged pieces, including fanfares, majestic ceremony and
regal splendour, not intended to outlive their immediate purpose.
Sales Points • This fourth volume in our première edition of the
complete orchestral works of Zdeněk Fibich has rich pickings in
terms of rarely heard works and first recordings of pieces in special
new editions prepared by conductor Marek Štilec. Acclaim for
previous releases in this collection saw volume 1 (8.572985) made
a MusicWeb International ‘Recording of the Year’, the same source
considering volume 2 (8.573157) “excellent enough to withstand the
most exalted competition. The recording is rich and full, giving full
justice to the luscious scoring. The use of scholarly versions of the
music… gives this new CD a real edge over its rivals”. Volume 3 is

Franz Ignaz BECK (1734–1809)
Symphonies
Op. 4, Nos. 4-6 • Op. 3, No. 5
Marek Štilec
Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice • Marek Štilec
The court at Mannheim, one of Europe’s great eighteenth-century
musical centres, provided myriad opportunities for creative
development. Having absorbed the ideas of his teacher, Johann
Stamitz, and of other luminaries, Beck wrote a series of symphonies
notable for their dramatic contrasts, breadth and sweep, the
progressive inclusion of woodwinds and a willingness to explore
expressive intensity. Further Beck Symphonies may be heard on
Naxos 8.553790, 8.554071, 8.570799 and 8.573248.
Marek Štilec was born in Prague in 1985 and began his studies
at the Prague Conservatoire in the violin class of Dana Vlachová.
He studied conducting with Leoš Svárovský, graduating from
the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. He works regularly with
a number of orchestras, including the Czech Radio Symphony
Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the
Swan, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Prague Chamber Orchestra,
Prague Philharmonia, Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra
Pardubice, Kammerphilharmonie Graz and the Berlin Camerata.
He founded the Chamber Orchestra Quattro with which he has
given dozens of concerts and has made a number of internationally
successful recordings. He works with Czech Television and Czech
Radio and his recordings have also been broadcast by the BBC.
Sales Points • Franz Ignaz Beck composed symphonies from the
1750s, when the genre was in its infancy, and they have long been
regarded as some of the most important early symphonic statements.
Couched in the Mannheim school they can rank with the symphonies
of Stamitz in the structural clearness and melodic ingenuity. This is
the second in the Beck series – the first was on 8.573848. The rival to
this disc is on CPO where Michael Schneider conducts La Stagione
in Op.3 No.5; All the symphonies have since been collected in a
CPO 3-CD box, released at the beginning of 2014 on 777880, but La
Stagione is an original instrument band and both Naxos releases are
with modern instrument ensembles.

Ignaz MOSCHELES (1794–1870)
Works for Flute and Piano
Sonate concertante in G major
Grande Sonate • Divertimento
Kazunori Seo, Flute • Makoto Ueno, Piano
Pianist, composer and conductor Ignaz Moscheles was one of
the most respected musicians of his time, and throughout his long
life was at the social and musical heart of Europe. Studies with
Beethoven’s old teachers, Albrechtsberger and Salieri, equipped him
with a first-class compositional technique used to notable effect in
a series of works for his own instrument, the piano. Moscheles also
wrote a delightful corpus of works for flute and piano, seldom heard
today, yet full of vivacious tunes, contrapuntal interest, and some
technically demanding passages which reflect his own status as a
virtuoso pianist.
Sales Points • Moscheles is remembered as a pianist and composer,
almost exclusively for his own instrument. His big concertos were
performed by many of the leading virtuosi of the past century. Interest
in his piano works has revived of late, but this disc is devoted to
his much rarer, seldom heard works for flute and piano. Naxos has
already released a Concertante in F major for flute and orchestra
by him in a disc called The Romantic Flute [8.555977]. The works
in this current disc are lively, full of delightful tunes and occasionally
demanding. They have many lighter features too, and should surprise
those who know only Moscheles’ piano works.

Franz Hauk and the Simon Mayr Chorus and Ensemble have
spearheaded the revival of the music of Johann Simon Mayr who
was born in Bavaria but lived in Italy. In the latest instalment of their
critically acclaimed recordings they turn to Il sogno di Partenope, an
allegorical staged cantata composed to mark the rebuilding of the
Teatro San Carlo in Naples following a fire in February 1816. Mayr’s
significance as an intermediary between the opera seria of the late
eighteenth-century and the melodrama of the early-nineteenth is
reflected in this important work, a unique kind of ‘cantata opera’ of
which only the second act survives.
Sales Points • Naxos’ discs of the music of Johann Simon Mayr have
pretty much single-handedly restored his music to public awareness.
Franz Hauk, with the Simon Mayr Chorus and Ensemble, has
spearheaded this revival, and they remain the composer’s leading
champions. Il sogno di Partenope is a staged cantata that has strong
operatic elements. Its appeal is not simply as a choral work as it
prefigures much that Rossini was later to write, and will appeal to
admirers of German and Italian music of the early nineteenth-century.
Only the second act survives, and is played in this performance. This
is its first-ever recording.
Born in Neuburg an der Donau in 1955, Franz Hauk studied
church and school music, with piano and organ, at the Munich
Musikhochschule and in Salzburg. He established the Simon Mayr
Chorus and Ensemble in 2003. The repertoire of the choir includes
works from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. A special emphasis
is laid on authentic historical performance and on the promotion of
music by Simon Mayr at the highest cultural level. Members of the
choir are vocal students from the Munich Hochschule für Music und
Theatre and singers selected from Ingolstadt and the region. The
orchestra is formed by leading professional players.

The works on this recording embrace a varied miscellany of Peter Maxwell Davies’
orchestral output from the early 1990s. The ‘choreographic poem’ The Beltane
Fire pits the sternness of the Reformation clergy against the pagan traditions of
the Orkney Islands. Concerned with environmental pollution, The Turn of the Tide
ultimately reaches “a triumphant dance of all creation”, while the Threnody and
Pavan are poignant memorial tributes for significant figures in the composer’s life.

Sales Points • Our catalog of works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
has for some time had sufficient critical mass to make each new
release an automatic purchase for connoisseurs of the best in
contemporary music. This new collection was preceded by our June
release of The Lighthouse (8.660354), acclaimed by BBC Music
Magazine as a work to “grip the imagination from start to finish…
incisively superb.” This new release is a collection with a great
deal of variety, reviving a Collins Classics recording of The Beltane Fire which
Gramophone considered “excellent performances… from the Maxwell Davies/
BBC Philharmonic partnership; the recordings are clean and vivid”. The BBC
Music Magazine also admired “the combined forces of four children’s choirs from
Manchester [who] acquit themselves magnificently in the final hymn to unsullied
nature” in The Turn of the Tide, a work which holds as much resonance today as
it did in the 1990s for those concerned about our environment.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDINGS
The ‘romantic avant-gardism’ of Barcelona-born Leonardo Balada pairs complex
techniques with a very direct emotional impact. These characteristics have often
been employed in exploring the impact of historical events, none more so than
the wars of the 20th century. Symphony No. 6 ‘Symphony of Sorrows’ (Dedicated
to the Innocent Victims of the Spanish Civil War) embeds traditional melodic
ideas in a coruscating single-movement exploration of the tragedies of war. The
Steel Symphony reflects the sonorities – in an abstract, non-programmatic way
– of Pittsburgh’s steel foundries, while the Concerto for Three Cellos, inspired
by Germany’s recovery after two catastrophic world wars, combines complex
techniques in a vivid work of almost surrealistic transformations.

which creates a powerful sense of immediacy and emotional intensity in his music.
He often touches on historical themes, such as the Spanish Civil War, which he
does in the Symphony No.6, which links it to his orchestral work Guernica, also
on the same subject. He is represented on several Naxos releases: Guernica is
coupled with Zapata and Symphony No.4 on 8.557342 and there are concertos
and orchestral works in the catalog as well – the Concerto No.3 for instance is
included in an all-Balada release in the 21st Century Classics series, issued over

Works for Violin and Piano
Duo Sonata on Polish Themes
The Three Gypsies • 2 Elegies
Grand duo concertant on Lafont’s ‘Le marin’
Voytek Proniewicz, Violin • Wojciech Waleczek, Piano
Franz Liszt wrote relatively little chamber music in his long and illustrious career.
The Duo Sonata is a tribute to Chopin, drawing on one of his famous Mazurkas as
well as other Polish themes. The gracefully charming Epithalamium was Liszt’s
wedding present to the great violinist Eduard Reményi, for whom the gipsy style
of Die drei Zigeuner was also intended. The two lyrical Elegies commemorate the
passing of members of Liszt’s circle, while the demandingly virtuoso variations of
the Grand Duo concertant make no concessions to either player.

Sales Points • Best known for his remarkable piano,
vocal and orchestral works, Liszt’s chamber music
is relatively unfamiliar but is highly entertaining,
tending to avoid the heavier romanticism of his more
extensive solo pieces. This sparkling new recording
brings together two star performers. Awardwinning violinist Voytek Proniewicz has already

Mozart married Constanze Weber in 1782, and it is thanks to her diligent curation
of ‘these marvellous relics’ that we have these rarely heard fragments including
fugues which reveal the influence of Bach and demonstrate Mozart’s agility with
sophisticated contrapuntal techniques. The more substantial Rondos have gained
popularity with their memorable themes and musical depth, while forays into
Baroque style can be heard in the unfinished Suite. These, the improvisational
Fantasias and a mocking parody of a Funeral March all highlight neglected facets
of Mozart’s œuvre.

Before he was thirty, Olivier Messiaen had written the work that established
his worldwide reputation as a visionary composer for the organ, La Nativité du
Seigneur (The Birth of the Saviour). A synthesis of his innovatory compositional
style, it is rich in colourful harmonies and precisely noted but flexible rhythms,
many derived from Hindu tâlas and from the metre of Gregorian chant. This
musical commentary on the Christmas story is divided into nine movements
evoking timeless grace, beauty, radiance, exhilaration, and majesty. Tom

very famous, is in a 14-CD box Warner tribute, released in 2008;
Marie-Claire Alain’s performance is housed in a bigger 18-CD
Warner box devoted to the composer’s music; Simon Preston’s
1965 recording is in a 2-CD set on Decca; Jennifer Bate (UnicornKanchana) and Oliver Latry (on DG) recorded the complete organ
music back in the 1980s – Bate’s has resurfaced on single discs on Priory CDs.
And there are other single disc accounts, such as Wilhelm Hafner’s on Motette.
Tom Winpenny is an admired choral director and organist whose Naxos discs
(Rutter, Mozart, Mendelssohn etc) have received critical acclaim.

Thailand International Guitar Competition in November 2011, has made a
remarkable impact on the international stage, receiving standing ovations
at venues in New York (Carnegie Hall), Shanghai and Beijing for his flawless
technique and youthful optimism. Aged just 14 at the time of this recording, he
has since given the opening concert at the 23rd International Guitar Symposium
in Iserlohn, Germany.
Sales Points • This recital by the exceptional 14 year-old guitarist Junhong
Kuang promises to create quite a stir on its release in the West. Renowned
guitarist and recording producer for the album Gerald Garcia states that Kuang
“really is something”, admiring the “youthful optimism about his playing” and
adding, “needless to say, his technique is flawless.” Kuang has already appeared
hundreds of times in concerts in China, Europe and the US, and by the time

Landscapes: Song Cycles and Folksongs
Clair Booth, Soprano • Nicky Spence, Tenor
Jeremy Huw Williams, Baritone
Andrew Matthews-Owen, Piano (primo) • Michael Pollock, Piano (secondo)
Alun Hoddinott dominated musical life in his native Wales for over half a century.
One of the most versatile and gifted composers of his generation he excelled in
all genres, from operas and symphonies to piano sonatas. This recording brings
together all of his songs for high voice and piano, revealing the vivid atmosphere
he was able to evoke in each setting. It includes his Six Welsh Folksongs and
his last vocal work, Towy Landscape, for soprano, baritone and piano duet,
Hoddinott’s epilogue to a lifetime of writing for the voice.
Sales Points • This is another of the discs released by Naxos that were
originally issued by the British Music Society on their own label [BMS437CD].
Alun Hoddinott is Wales’ greatest composer, versatile, prolific and international
in outlook. Cardiff’s new major concert hall is named in his honor. Songs play an
important role in his output, many for high voice – this was the first disc to bring
together all his songs for high voice and piano, but also includes his arrangements
of Welsh Folksongs and his last work, for soprano, baritone and piano called
Towy Landscape. This will appeal strongly to lovers of British song on disc.

The intensely personal music of French composer Anthony Girard embodies a wealth of
expressive elements. Influences from oriental and medieval music are as pronounced
as those of his great predecessors Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel. Luminous mysticism is
frequently at the core of his writing, as in Vers le ciel whilst lyrical beauty radiates throughout
Behind the Light. Dreamlike meditative states reflect Girard’s absorption in minimalism and
in the second of the Deux Pièces d’après Marc Aurèle (Two Pieces after Marcus Aurelius) he
explores music of timeless and rapt simplicity.
9.70221
Sales Points • Anthony Girard is a unique voice in contemporary French music, heir to
the tradition established by Fauré and Debussy, whilst he has also absorbed elements of
Minimalism and oriental music. Poetry and mysticism are at the heart of his works. The
works on this disc are for chamber forces – violin, cello, piano – and are very approachable.
A previous Naxos release [8.572993] features work for clarinet and piano - Eloge de la folie
(In Praise of Folly) and the mythic Les Noces d’Orphée (The Marriage of Orpheus), and Le
Cercle de la vie (The Circle of Life), a set of 24 piano preludes.

Born into a family of musicians in the same year as Bach, Handel and
Scarlatti, Ludovico Giustini worked as an organist and maestro di cappella
but most of his church music has been lost. He is chiefly remembered for his
Sonate da cimbalo di piano e forte detto volgarmente di martelletti, Op. 1,
the first known work to have been specifically composed for the pianoforte.
Newly invented, few such instruments existed at the time, but its expressive
nuances ultimately saw it take over from the harpsichord. Giustini’s sonatas
take the best of both worlds with their alternation of fast and slow movements from the sonata
da chiesa, and dance forms from the sonata da camera.

Memoirs of My Life
By Edward Gibbon
Unabridged
Read by David Timson
9 781843 798750
Edward Gibbon (1737−1794) was an English historian and Member of Parliament known for
his monumental series The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire, which chronicled the
dissipation of the Roman dynasties in a lofty, majestic style unique to its author.
Memoirs of My Life, published posthumously in 1796, wholly unveils the character of the
world’s greatest historian in full candour and openness. We follow him from birth, through to
his education at Oxford, to his time in Switzerland where he met Voltaire and fell in love with a
Swiss girl. We accompany him on his travels through France and Lausanne, leading on to his
eventual arrival in Rome, where he conceived of his epic Decline and Fall.
Gibbon’s Memoirs is a portrait of a rich and productive life and offers a compelling insight into
a towering figure; it is essential listening for anyone interested in great literature.

Arabella
By Georgette Heyer
Unabridged
Read by Phyllida Nash
9 781843 798637
Perhaps the most deeply cherished novel among Heyer fans, Arabella is the story of a poor
girl who captures the heart of a handsome and wealthy bachelor.
When Arabella first arrives in London, she has only one mission: to snare a rich husband. With
a mind to beat the competition, she pretends to be a rich heiress and soon finds herself the
talk of the town, pursued by the most eligible bachelors in the city. But she has her sights on
one man only: the much-hunted Mr Beaumaris. Our feisty heroine puts up a fight and deals the
worldly-wise Beaumaris a deft hand in the game of love; at first grudgingly charmed, he soon
becomes smitten. However, what will he think of her deceitful charade? Will it ruin her chance
to be with the perfect man?
Arabella contains some of Heyer’s most witty dialogue and romantic banter; with its delightful
and laugh-out-loud passages it is no wonder it remains the fan favourite.

The Man in the Iron Mask
By Alexandre Dumas
Unabridged
Read by Bill Homewood
9 781843 798699
The Man in the Iron Mask continues the adventures of the dauntless heroes of The Three
Musketeers − Aramis, Athos, Porthos and d’Artagnan. In old age their swashbuckling ought to
have been replaced by a more gentle way of life, but the veteran warriors find themselves at
the centre of a plot in which both hearts and heads are broken, and the very throne of France
is at stake.
