Last month I wrote about four
Greek words that are translated into English using the word
“love.” Now we turn to the Hebrew language. (It sounds like
I am a language expert but I’m
not.) Evidently, there are a
number of Hebrew words that
different translations of the
Bible use “love” as the English
equivalent. Most are found
only a very few times. The two
primary Hebrew words are
“ahab,” used 208 times in the
Old Testament and “hesed,”
used 247 times.
My best understanding is that
“ahab” is a general word, sort of like
we use the word “love” in English.
Here are some examples of its usage: When God told Abraham to
sacrifice Isaac, He said, “Take now
your son, your only son Isaac,
whom you love, (ahab) and go to the
land of Moriah, and offer him there
as a burnt offering on one of the
mountains of which I shall tell
you” (Genesis 22:2). When Eliezer
escorted Rebekah from Nahor to
Negev where Isaac lived, “Then
Isaac brought her into his mother
Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah
and she became his wife, and he
loved (ahab) her” (Genesis 24:67).
When Isaac was old, he said to his
son Esau, “Make me savory food,
such as I love” (ahab) (Genesis
27:4). 1 Kings 11 1-2 says, “But King
Solomon loved (ahab) many foreign
women, as well as the daughter of
Pharaoh…”
“Hesed” is one of the most important words in the Old Testament. Scholars suggest that it is difficult to translate into English.
There are four basic meanings of
the word—strength and mercy and
kindness and commitment—all four
need to be seen in overlapping circles as describing love. “Loving
kindness” is used most often in KJV
to translate “hesed.” However, over
Abraham and Isaac
time, that can morph into a weak,
soft, feely idea. Newer translations
use “steadfast love.” “Hesed” combines sacrifice with loyalty. The
unique feature of this word that sets
it apart from all others is the concept of covenant love—starting with
God as the example in all His covenants with man, including His “new
covenant in Christ’s blood.” “Hesed”
is always used in a binding relationship. One author I read described it
as “love without an exit strategy.” (Orpah would be a good illustration of having an exit strategy.)
“Hesed” love is committed love.
The best way to understand this
kind of love is NOT by having a theory in our heads but by living it in
everyday life. That’s what Ruth did
and that is why the book that bears
her name is such a beautiful love
story. She said to Naomi, “Do not
urge me to leave you or to return
from following you. For where you
go I will go, and where you lodge I
will lodge. Your people shall be my
people, and your God my God.
Where you die I will die, and there
will I be buried. May the LORD do
so to me and more also if anything
but death parts me from you” (Ruth
1:16-17 ESV) That is “hesed” love!
This is the kind of love that makes
decisions based on commitment,
not on feelings at the moment.
Continued on page 3
LIVING A LOVING LIFE (Part 2) - Continued
We cannot get any more basic than Micah 6:8, “What does the LORD require
of you but to do justice, and to love
kindness, and to walk humbly with your
God?” It is interesting to note that “to
love kindness/mercy” is “ahab hesed” in
Hebrew. It is saying that we are to love
love (spellcheck caught the repetition);
we are to love “hesed.” I believe that
“hesed” love is foundational to all loves.
Think about it in relation to marriage
and think about how our culture is
mocking this aspect of marriage. No
wonder marriages are in such deep
trouble. This concept of “hesed” love
relates to family life and citizenship and
friendships and loving one another in
the body of Christ and, most of all, loving God. It is impossible to “love the
Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your
mind” without a committed, loyal,
steadfast, covenant love. “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of
God, and everyone who loves Him who
begot also loves him who is begotten of
Him. By this we know that we love the
children of God, when we love God and
keep His commandments. For this is
the love of God, that we keep His commandments” (1 John 5:1-3 NKJV). This
is the kind of love we learn about in the
Book of Ruth. This is how we live a loving life!
IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION
Randy Rhoads,
Tax Consultant for WPA District
Concerning the changes in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)
rules, starting 7/1/2015 if an employer (church) reimburses or pays directly for an
employee’s healthcare premium that is not for an employer group healthcare plan,
those premiums are fully taxable for all taxes and added to box 1 of the W2 as additional wages. This is for individual healthcare plans for which the premiums are
paid or reimbursed by the employer. For a minister, that means around 35% in additional taxes due to healthcare premiums. The problem is the minister still has the
same premium to pay but 35% less money to pay it with. The 35% goes out in additional taxes.
What I have found out is there is still a way to legally get those healthcare premiums to be a tax free reimbursement. This is provided for under section 105 of the
IRC. It usually requires third party management of the reimbursement account because extremely complicated rules must be followed for this to be legal. I have a
company that I have been referring many churches to that has lowest management
fees that I could find along with a rock solid guarantee and track record. The savings for ministers are often hundreds if not thousands of dollars in taxes. This is
legal and guaranteed. This is not a sales pitch. It is a resource for ministers to potentially use that could help them financially.
Great Commission
Day 2016
Great Commission Day materials recently arrived in
Alliance churches. It is our
hope that every church will
embrace this opportunity to
come together as a family
and extend the reach of the
gospel to peoples who have
never heard the name of
Jesus. Let’s not deny ANYONE access to the Hope of
all mankind. And let’s not
deny any Alliance family
member the privilege of
participation.
For more information, click
here. And b e su r e to
watch the video segment
that highlights what past
giving from the U.S. Alliance family helped accomplish in a remote village in
Senegal.
With all the causes worthy
of your support, you could
choose to train future leaders, provide critical medical
care, proclaim freedom in
Christ, plant new churches,
dig clean water wells, restore broken marriages,
help those devastated by
war and disaster, or disciple
new believers.
Or you can choose to do
ALL these things simultaneously with your gift to the
Great Commission Fund on
GC Day.
At the invitation of Randy Rhoads, you may contact him at cerranenterprises@
gmail.com for details and contact information.

John 20:21
Registration Deadline...June 6
June 19, 2016
Father’s Day is a celebration
honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal
bonds, and the influence of
fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third
Sunday of June, though it is
also celebrated on other days
by many other countries.
Father’s Day was inaugurated
in the United States in the early 20th century to complement
Mother’s Day.

Christ-Centered Discipleship
New believers and
members require
much more than a
handshake when they
join your church—
they need a Christcentered friendship
with someone who
will walk alongside them and make
them feel welcome. This new friend
should be prepared to introduce them
to other church members, answer their
questions, lead them to a small-group
Bible study, and serve as a role model
for their spiritual growth.
So how does a church train disciple-makers?
One resource, Becoming a DiscipleMaker Starter Pack, from International Evangelism Association (IEA), is
a multistep, small-group course to
train church members in personal Disciplemaking. IEA’s vision is “to help
churches train disciple-makers to personally befriend and equip each new
believer and member with the needed
ministry skills to enjoy a lifetime of
spiritual growth and evangelistic multiplication.”
Originally sold at the retail price of $110,
the course in now available for $17.95.
To receive this discount, visit http://

October 10-11, 2016 at the Chestnut Ridge Church...where my son-in-law,
Rev. Kevin Deming serves as Family Life Pastor. Pass this information on to

Dream
Incentive
Grant
Do you have a
dream for your
church that
seems almost
impossible to achieve? Because of
a very generous gift, The National
Office was to establish the Dream
Incentive Grant for three years
(2015, 2016, 2017), which enables
us to provide funding to help
small to midsize churches potentially realize an otherwise unattainable ministry “dream.” We
are waiting with great anticipation to see what dreams God has
planted in the hearts of Alliance
church leaders and will depend
on Him to help us select the projects that will have the greatest
Kingdom impact.
The total grant money available
for award in 2016 is $200,000.
Since we desire to give multiple
grants, the maximum grant request per Alliance church is limited to $60,000. None of the
grants awarded will be funded by
Great Commission Funds.
The objective of the Dream Incentive Grant is to build the local
church. This is not a church–
planting grant; it is intended to
increase the Kingdom impact of
an existing congregation. Your
dream might be an extensive new
ministry that would sustain itself
for years or an outreach event
that larger churches could afford
to finance on their own. Allow
God to expand your vision.
Disciplemaking ministries, and
community impact.
Dream Incentive Grant continued: As y ou pr epa r e y ou r
application for a 2016 Dream Incentive Grant, think about: 1) the
sustainability of this dream endeavor; and 2) whether you have
church leadership support and
significant congregation backing.
Download Application:
Scrolling down lower right side.
Application Deadline: September
15, 2016
Grant Decision: December 15,
2016
Public Announcement and Distribution of Funds: January 15, 2017
The grant money awarded should
result in a strengthening of the
local church through conversions,
baptisms, leadership formation,
