Forced Induction 2013 April article
Hey MMR fans – we back again, here we go with another massive project –first let me just say that
absolutely no other company in South Africa goes to the lengths that TurboDirect S.A do to provide you
readers with this sort of in-depth information and step by step projects to the scale we do!
This is an article for the SUPERCHARGER FANS and we will be charging a 6.0l V8 Lumina UTE with our
newest, top of the line supercharger kits from Magnuson – this is a direct bolt-on kit which includes
absolutely EVERYTHING to get this UTE pumping tire smoking grunt out of two big boxes filled with
American designed and manufactured products.
First a little about the product itself – Magnuson manufacture supercharger products for OEM’s e.g
Toyota TRD, Lotus, and many others.
Magnuson Products, LLC. R&D Team’s goal is to create the most durable, quiet, powerful, and efficient
supercharger system possible utilizing the “roots style” blower, these are based on the EATON type
screws which do not require an oil feed, and do not use a noisy gearbox which runs on expensive
bearings and requires regular service intervals. The EATON type screws require a service inspection
every 80 000 MILES – centrifugal superchargers will never match this sort of reliability.
Here are some pictures of installed SC kits – looks OE doesn’t it?
Note the name on the above picture – Hennessey, everyone knows who these guys are – and they use
Magnuson – say no more!
Talk about a custom colour for a custom Mustang –
Here is a pic of an OEM designed unit by Magnuson – TRD
Below is a picture of a Lotus OEM application – once again designed by Magnuson.
Enough about the past – and back to the present, lets open the boxes up and see what we got! At first
when I saw the boxes, I thought to myself, surely this kit cannot have all the bits and pieces in it, and
that it would require some sort fabrication and brackets etc – well that’s until I opened the box…. I’m
not easily impressed, but when I opened up the packaging and laid out all the components, I was more
than impressed to see the level of product, the quality of the product and also how comprehensive this
kit was supplied!
Here are some pictures of the contents – once we are through the contents, we going to follow a plan of
action as follows:1. Run the car on our dyno to see a baseline power and torque graph.
2. Setup the cameras to film and photograph the project which we will later on load up onto our
web page for those die hard tech heads to see
3. Start the disassembly process of the vehicle and install the kit
What I am going to do is critically comment on the quality and design of the bolt-on kit and the
installation process itself. Im going to inspect and comment on all the parts included in the kit, and
comment on the build, placement and fitment of each part to provide an in-depth view on the product
and compatibility thereof to the vehicle.
Here are the pictures of the contents inside the kit, which came in two big boxes:-
Bosch water pump for the charge cooler, billet aluminium pulleys for the SC belt, OEM intake manifold
gaskets, custom cast pipe work for the intake from the air filter, all hoses, clamps, fittings, and electrical
fuse and relay block for the water pump – right down to a drill bit required for the install – this kit is as
complete as you going to get anywhere on planet earth!
The full colour instructions also included are said to guide even the beginner through the installation –
however I would not recommend you attempt the install unless you are experienced under the hood of
a car and “know what both ends of a spanner look like”
Well here is the juicy bit – the supercharger head unit itself, all beautifully anodized in OEM Black, with
the intake manifold, and charge cooler already installed together as a unit with fuel rails, internally
relieved valve, belts assembled, driven by a carbon fibre drive shaft – WOW – all that needs to be done
is to transfer injectors to the head unit assembly and it bolts onto the motor --- NICE!!
Magnuson believe that you should be able to have big horsepower, drivability, and a long-lasting, reliable
product – lets find out!! Until next time – ill leave the base line Dyno graph hanging … until next month
remember you enjoy horsepower – WE OWN IT!!! – come get some!
