KEEPS GETTING BETTER.
Every year, the LUNA Team gets stronger, making the idea behind
it more powerful, more dimensional. Every year, through the
incredible efforts of our pros, ambassadors, and support crew, we
renew our commitment to our original ideals and open ourselves
to yet higher aspirations.
We can all be very proud of the entire team, their athletic
achievements, their contributions to woman’s sport, and the
successes they’ve helped us win on behalf of the Breast Cancer
Fund. With the right heart and the right people, we’ve turned
something of a dream into the top team in the game – and a real
force for awareness and change.
That is absolutely inspirational. It’s what makes the LUNA Chix
Pro team so special. It’s what makes LUNA a way of living.

THE ORIGINAL EPIPHANY
Watching his young daughter Lydia on a beach in 2001, Gary Erickson
wondered what the future would hold for her as a woman and athlete.
Ignited by this moment, and encouraged by his wife Kit, Gary conceived
the LUNA Chix Pro Team – a professional women’s mountain bike team
with the support, resources, and compensation equivalent to male
counterparts. Now including mountain bike, cyclo-cross, triathlon, and
XTERRA athletes, this dynamic all-women’s program aspires to
embolden and motivate women from diverse backgrounds to seek new
challenges in their lives.
Lydia Erickson was 7 when Gary had his epiphany. She’s now 15, and an active
competitor in Far West alpine ski competition and an avid mountain biker.

THE LUNA CHIX PRO TEAM IS AN ALL-WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL MOUNTAIN BIKE, CYCLO-CROSS,
AND MULTI-SPORT (TRIATHLON AND XTERRA) TEAM SPONSORED BY LUNA, MAKER OF LUNA BAR AND
LUNA SPORT PRODUCTS. THE LUNA SQUAD IS COMPRISED OF FIVE PRO MOUNTAIN BIKERS, FOUR ELITE
TRIATHLETES, AND TWO XTERRA PROS.
THE WORLD’S BEST TEAM
The LUNA Chix pros finished 2008 as the top-ranked women’s mountain bike team in the world after winning
the season-long UCI World Cup team and points competitions. LUNA was also the only cycling team to have
two of its members qualify for the mountain bike race at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The LUNA Chix have also proven to be the most successful pro team in the history of U.S. mountain bike
racing, winning 14 of 16 possible national series titles since the team’s inception. In fact, during the 2007
season, LUNA athletes won every cross-country race in the national series.
LUNA pros also won races and set records in numerous triathlon and XTERRA races in 2008. The highlight
of LUNA’s multi-sport season was the XTERRA World Championships where the LUNA Chix set the fastest
splits in all three disciplines, finishing second and third overall. LUNA athletes also won the 2008 U.S.
National XTERRA Championship, recording three national wins.

2008 – LUNA’s first official season on the national XTERRA circuit – was a smashing
success by most accounts with Danelle Kabush and Shonny Vanlandingham scoring
silver and bronze medals at the XTERRA World Championships. Shonny also locked
up the 2008 U.S. National XTERRA Championship, winning three races along the
way. They both return to the LUNA team for another year to compete in XTERRA, as
well as selected mountain bike and road events.

WALDEK STEPNIOWSKI: TEAM MANAGER
Waldek is LUNA’s supreme tactician, talent scout, logistical guru, and
booster of moral. He and also fills the role of soigneur, massage
therapist, first aid nurse, and general string puller. A former member
of the Polish National Cycling Team, Waldek defected from the Eastern
Bloc in 1985 during an international stage race in Austria. Upon his
arrival in the United States he sought out and married the love of his
life. He is the father of two very enthusiastic boys who keep things
exciting when he’s not on the circuit.
CHRIS MATHIS: EQUIPMENT MANAGER & LEAD MECHANIC
Chris Mathis returns for his seventh season with the LUNA Pro Team.
As LUNA’s lead mechanic, truck driver, and jack-of-all trades, Chris’s
responsibilities include procurement and maintenance of all team
equipment, driving to and from events, and setting up the LUNA pit at
race sites. The two nicest people you will ever meet, Chris and his wife
Adriana spend their spare time riding mountain bikes and drinking
fine wine. Chris is also a certified chocoholic and attends private
counseling in his spare time.
JOSEPH “ZEPH” WADSWORTH: MECHANIC
Zeph assists Chris with the truck driving, mechanic’s duties, and setting
up the LUNA trailer at races. As a mainstay of the LUNA team, Wadsworth
is the latest in a long line of mechanics working on the pro circuit out of
Art’s Cyclery in San Luis Obispo. An avid mountain biker, wine connoisseur,
and former competitive swimmer, Wadsworth is an engineer/physics type
– a problem solver – with a keen interest in car stereos. Fittingly, he is the
team’s audio tech and DJ, tasked with selecting appropriate music to get
the LUNA Chix fired up before they race.
DAVE MCLAUGHLIN: GENERAL MANAGER
A veteran of team management, McLaughlin is responsible for LUNA
Pro Team sponsorship and presentation. McLaughlin, or “Mac” as he’s
known on the circuit, has produced several world championship and
world cup winning teams. Dave is a former elite road cyclist and
cross-country ski racer.

THE BREAST CANCER FUND
In response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, the Breast Cancer
Fund identifies – and advocates for elimination of – the environmental and
other preventable causes of the disease. LUNA’s commitment to women’s
issues, nutrition, and environmental sustainability is a perfect fit with the
Breast Cancer Fund’s prevention-focused approach to protecting human health from toxic chemicals
and dangerous environmental exposures.
The LUNA Pro Team also generates revenue for the nonprofit Breast Cancer Fund through various programs
including donation of a membership to the LUNA Pro Team during its largest event of the season, the Sea
Otter Classic, for the Breast Cancer Fund’s annual eBay auction held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer Fund / Luna Pro Team Auction Winner
Bev is an accomplished former competitive cyclist with podium
finishes in World Championship and World Cup events. Originally
a road racer, she came into mountain biking in the early eighties.
Her last race was the World Masters Championship in 2005 where
she finished third (...maybe we should sign her up full-time).
To honor the Breast Cancer Fund, LUNA introduced the LUNA Berry
