PRE-SCHOOL NEWS: Although it was a short week due to the holiday, it was a week of
preparations. Easter was on everyone’s minds as the preschool children made decorations,
sang Easter songs and read Easter books. Miss Carmela’s two year old class made Easter
bunny collages. Miss Michelle’s three year old class made Easter baskets and chicks. Miss
Joanne’s four year old class learned some Easter songs and made tigers for
the letter T. Miss Tina’s four year old class made flower gardens to celebrate the first
day of spring and studied the letter X. All the classes had Easter parties in their rooms
with their school families and their own families. From our school family to our parish
family, have a wonderful Easter!
The Paschal Lamb symbolizes the Risen Lord Jesus Christ— The Lamb of
God, the Christian symbol of the Passover Sacrifice of Jesus from death
to life. It is to be placed on the front window or storm door of the
home., witnessing to who and what we believe as Christians. The symbol
of the lamb remains in a prominent place from Easter Sunday,
March 27, 2016 until the Easter Season ends on Pentecost Sunday,
May 15, 2016. It is taken down on that day.

Alleluia! Christ is risen; truly, He is risen! That Easter greeting offers all of
us hope, encouragement and perseverance.
At this special time of year, let us witness Christ’s Resurrection
by bringing hope and encouragement to others.
Let us remember those of our neighbors who are hungry and in need, and
consider sharing our many gifts with them.
One way to do this is by donating to the Catholic Ministries Appeal so that we can continue to
bring hope and encouragement to those in need in our Long Island community. Last year,
because of you we were able to serve more than 600,000 people.

Dear Parishioners,
In this special season of Lent, the Catholic Ministries Appeal provides each of us an
opportunity to join together - renewed in spirit and in our commitment - to respond
wholeheartedly to Pope Francis’ call to enter the Door of Mercy and open our hearts to
our brothers and sisters, especially those in difficulty and need.
Our gifts to the Appeal serve others through numerous programs and ministries that feed
the hungry, provide shelter and carry God’s love to the ill and homebound, including
those imprisoned. Our support also demonstrates our commitment to vocations for the
priesthood, the diaconate, religious education, youth programs and defense of the
unborn.
In short, there is an abundance of ministry which takes place on Long Island, in whole or
in part, because of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The presence and activity of these
ministries connects our parish to the entire Catholic Church on Long Island. Moreover,
our parish benefits financially by your support to the Catholic Ministries Appeal because
once we reach our goal, 20% of all we raise comes back to our parish community to use
for our needs.
This Lent, during this special Jubilee Year of Mercy, I invite you to reflect on the words
of Pope Francis and answer his call to open our hearts as we work together as one and
look to the future with hope. Please join with me in supporting the Catholic Ministries
Appeal by making a gift today.
Thank you for your continuing generosity in supporting the good works of our
Church. May God bless you with many graces during this holy season of Lent.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Stephen

Dear Defenders of Life:
PLEASE JOIN US! It matters! Have no doubt, we are being effective. The constant
presence and visibility of pro-lifers has kept this issue relevant and has saved untold
numbers of children's lives. Since 2011 at least 162 abortion providers have closed
or stopped performing abortions, whereas only 21 clinics have opened. That
represents the swiftest annual decline in the number of abortion providers ever,
according to Bloomberg News. The same article cites an abortionist lamenting that
the cumulative effect of stricter regulations and the community working against the
abortion industry can shutter clinics by raising the difficulty and cost of doing
business to unsustainable levels. Our own Larry Cervelino, a dedicated member of
the LICL who passed away in December, documented over 200 women who
changed their hearts and minds and decided to keep their babies as a result of the
presence of his and other pro-lifers outside Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in
Smithtown. Join us for some of the events and make your presence
known. Bring the Kids! All pro-lifers are invited to march in the Ronkonkoma St.
Patrick's Day Parade Sunday, March 13 - 1:30pm line up. Meet at the corner of
Patchogue/Holbrook and Portion Roads in Ronkonkoma. March behind the Families

The IRA Charitable Rollover
is back and is now
permanent!
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made
to our Parish.
If…
You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New
York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified
charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form.
VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive
the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.
Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute
$5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs
the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the
Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable
distribution.
This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney,
tax advisor or investment professional.
Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to
include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest
by adding the following language:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general
program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”
Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable
bequest or consider other Estate Planning options,
such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a
life insurance policy or an IRA account.
To receive a brochure about Wills and Bequests, please call Barbara Kilarjian at 516-379-5210 ext.

THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR’S PARTICIPATION IN DIVINE COMPASSION –
Professional Overnight for Spiritual Directors.
April 29-30, 2016
This workshop for spiritual directors will explore compassion as the very nature of the God who moves toward us in tenderness

God’s compassion in our role as directors and this experience deepens our capacity for empathic listening and response in our
spiritual direction sessions. These themes will be included in a tapestry of music and movement that embodies the compassion
we hope to embody.
Friday Night: This introductory evening session is open to everyone: Cultivating Compassion: A Point of Radical Convergence
among the World’s Religions

GOD IS EVERYWHERE!
In the midst of the busyness of life, we invite you to spend a relaxing and refreshing afternoon letting God remind you that God is
indeed everywhere. Sometimes when people reflect on the circumstances of their lives they say: “If only I had more leisure in my
life, then I could pray.” Or “If only I didn’t have so much pressure, then I could find God.” But the truth is: “The place where we
stand is holy ground.”
