For the Parishioners of St. Gertrude
The Altar Bread and Wine used at our Masses this
week are offered in loving memory of:
Arthur & Patricia Kerley
by Mr. & Mrs. Harry Tice
New to our Parish? We welcome you
and ask that you please stop into our
Parish office to register. The Lord told Israel to reach out
to newcomers and welcome them (Leviticus 19:36) .
Today’s Readings
First Reading — Melchizedek, the king
of Salem and a priest of God Most
High, brought out bread and wine and
blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20).
Psalm — You are a priest forever, in
the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110).
Second Reading — Paul gives his
description of the institution of the
Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
Gospel — Jesus speaks to the crowd
about the kingdom of God and then
feeds them with five loaves and two
fish (Luke 9:11b-17).
============================
FED BY THE LORD
Jesus’ words “This is my body”
and “This cup is the new covenant in
my blood” were only part of his table
blessing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in
remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians
11:24, 25).
This is the good news of today’s
solemnity. Like the five thousand
hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord.
This is not food that satisfies for only a
short time, until the next meal. It is
food that lasts and changes us. It is
food for sharing in much the same way
as Melchizedek did when he brought
bread and wine to the returning
Abraham.
As children of God’s reign, we are
blessed to be able to receive and share
God’s gift. And we do so in the way
most appropriate to our state in life—as
parents, children, husbands, wives, or
religious.

CATECHISTS NEEDED Have you thought about
becoming a catechist, but have the following thoughts:
“I’m hesitant to become a catechist because…
I don’t know if I can handle a group of kids.
I’m not sure that I have anything to share.
I’m not that holy…I’m just a regular person.”
Not to worry, just thinking about being a catechist means you have what it takes.
I will provide you with support in classroom management including all lessons, activities,
and materials as well as many resources and of course, the Holy Spirit!
Come join a team of catechists that love learning and living their Faith.
We are in need of the following catechists: grade 4 (Tuesday 3:45-4:45), grade 1
(Monday 3:45-4:45) and grade 8 (Wednesday 7-8).
If you are interested, please contact the Religious Education Office. 628-2432 or

If you have suffered from abortion, you may be
experiencing:
Guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, nightmares, substance abuse, eating disorders,
suicidal thoughts. These are some of the symptoms of Post-Abortion Stress. The pain
is real, but you do not have to suffer alone. Our God of Mercy wants to heal you and
give you the peace He desires you to have. There are people dedicated to helping
you–- do not be afraid to reach out for help.
The Sisters of Life walk in solidarity with those
suffering after abortion on the journey of
healing.
The Sisters host monthly Days of Prayer and Heal-ing, monthly Gatherings, and
Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats. These events are opportuni es to
experience the loving mercy of God in a safe and sacred space.
All retreats are led by the Sisters of Life and women who have experienced
both the suffering of abor on and the joy of healing in Christ. The retreats are
directed by faithful priests who have a sensi vity and a heart for those who
suffer. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer,
opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The IRA Charitable Rollover
is back and is now
permanent!
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made
to our Parish.
If…
You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New
York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified
charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form.
VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive
the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.
Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute
$5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs
the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the
Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable
distribution.
This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney,
tax advisor or investment professional.
Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to
include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest
by adding the following language:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general
program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”
Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable
bequest or consider other Estate Planning options,
such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a
life insurance policy or an IRA account.
To receive a brochure about Wills and Bequests, please call Barbara Kilarjian at 516-379-5210 ext.

SUMMER WORKSHOP – CHURCH OF MERCY AND A GOSPEL OF JOY! The
Spirituality of Pope Francis
The papacy of Pope Francis and the vision he has shared since his election have been remarkable and indeed electrifying to many.
His papacy has been marked by many “firsts.” Not least among these, he is the first Jesuit pope and the first pope to choose the
name Francis. His words and example have become an inspiration to believers and non-believers alike. This workshop will
examine the first three years of his papacy and what biographer John Allen has called, “The Francis Miracle.” In the course of
the week, we will discuss the Franciscan and Ignatian influences on his spirituality together with an analysis of his writings,
interviews, and homilies with a particular focus on the themes of mercy and joy.
