Alcalá de Henares is regarded through this guide as an important destination for business events; a bet that complements the
wide range of cultural and heritage activities offered by the City
of Arts and Letters and that also wants to become the keystone
of the city's economic development.
Facing the new economic challenges, we have opted to emphasise the exceptional resources that are at our disposal, and
exploit the economic side of this cultural city, where singularity
makes us unique and supports us in our efforts to generate wealth and employment,
as well as to be a Convention City.
The manual you are holding in your hands will allow you to discover every detail of
Alcalá, its important historical and monumental legacy –declared World Heritage
City in 1998 by UNESCO-, and our wide range of hotels and modern infrastructure,
transforming thus our city into an ideal place for holding meetings and conferences.
From now on, our city opens its doors to you all and offers, through the Municipal
Conference Office of Alcalá de Henares (OMCA), the support and help you might
need to hold a successful meeting in a modern city, and the singularity of a unique
historical environment.

Thanks to its location near the capital of Spain and Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez International Airport; its wide range of hotels; its extensive and rich cultural agenda;
and its transport infrastructure, whether public or private; Alcalá de Henares is a
perfect place for holding all kinds of conferences, meetings and incentive trips.
We would like to position Alcalá de Henares as a city of economic development by
supporting a sector that fosters a high expenditure per tourist, enhances tourism all
year round, and makes the tourist offer profitable; all this along with the common effort and close collaboration with those associations we joined: the Spain Convention
Bureau and the Congress-World Heritage Cities Alliance of Spain.
This manual allows you to know first-hand the offer of our city, give advice and professional assistance from the Municipal Conference Office of Alcalá de Henares
(OMCA), and also allows you to enjoy a unique experience which makes us feel
proud of our city: the opportunity to hold your conferences or meetings in exceptional places that are part of a Historical Site, declared World Heritage Site by
UNESCO. Do not hesitate any more; holding your conference or meeting in Alcalá
is a guarantee of satisfaction and success.

How to arrive by plane
The International Airport of Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez is located about 15km
from Alcalá de Henares. Barajas is the most important hub in Spain and the fourth
largest airport in Europe. In 2011 49,671,270 millions of passengers used Barajas
airport, 429,390 flight operations were carried out and 394,154,078 tons of cargo
were transported. In January 2006 the new Terminal 4 was open and increased the
number of passenger capacity in 70 million people. Being a spectacular design,
Terminal 4 was awarded with the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture and became one of the landmarks of our Community. The proximity of the city with Barajas
Airport allows passengers to save time and money when travelling. Another great advantage of Alcalá de Henares is its proximity to the IFEMA Exhibition Centre, located
just 20 km from the city.

ART AND CULTURE
The City of the Three Cultures
Discover Alcalá during the Middle Ages, with its three quarters –Christian, Jewish
and Muslim-, through a route that goes all over the landmarks of these historical
areas. The spaces and memories of the mosque and the old synagogues, the jewish butcher’s, the shop keepers, the churches, the trades and places that shaped
and gave much of its character to a medieval town full of contrasts, was an example of cultural fellowship. Ceramic plaques are placed at the most relevant places
of medieval Alcalá. A cross, a seven branched lampstand or a half moon appears
on them, depending on which one of the three quarters they are placed at. There are
also three main plaques, marking the limits of each quarter and the location of the
remaining plaques.
The Muslim Quarter
Main Plaque, Bernardas Square, Archaeological Museum. - Mosque, Santiago
Street. - Almanxara, San Bernardo Street, Archaeological Museum. - Old Market,
crossing between Diego de Torres and Santiago Streets. - Muslim Quarter wicket,
Diego de Torres Street, in front of Madre de Dios street.
Jewish Quarter
Main Plaque, Mayor Street, in front of Imagen Street. - Major Synagogue, Corral de
la Sinagoga alley, facing Mayor Street. – Minor Synagogue, Santiago Street. – Jewish butcher’s, crossing between Cervantes and Mayor Streets. – Shops and houses
at Cambio Corner, Mayor Street, in front of Santos Niños Square.
100
Christian Quarter
Main Plaque, Santos Niños Square, near Calle Mayor. – Cathedral of St Justus and
St Pastor. – The Town Council and the Tercia/St Lucy Hermitage, Tercia Street. –
Studium generale, Travesia de Seises Street. – The Brothel, Damas street. – Archbishop’s Jail, Vicario Street. – Santa María la Rica medieval hospital, Santa María la
Rica Street. – Pillory Square, Santos Niños Square. - Fortress/Archbishop’s Palace,
Fountain Tower, Palacio Square. – Walled enclosure, Sandoval y Rojas Street.
The City of Literature
Thanks to Alcalá de Henares’s cultural relevance and its university tradition our history is full of writers. Some of them were born here, some others discovered and described our city, and many became famous. This signposting guides us through the
places connected with them at Alcalá.
The City of the Storks
Historical and natural heritage are closely linked in Alcalá’s landscape. The historical buildings’ rooftops are a natural settlement area for the white stork. This favours
a tourist route merging both elements, thus creating a new way to discover the city.
Don Juan Tenorio and Don Juan’s Nights at Alcalá
Open air performance of the immortal romantic play from José Zorrilla around All
Saints’ Day. According to the tradition, two performances are made, usually on October, the 31st and November, the 1st, coinciding with the All Saints’ Day celebrations. Don Juan Tenorio at Alcalá was proclaimed a festivity of Regional Tourist
Interest in 2002.
As a complement for those performances, every November, the Council of Tourism
of Alcalá organises dramatized visits: “Las Noches de Don Juan en Alcalá” (Don
Juan’s Nights at Alcalá), a theatrical tour through Alcalá’s Old Town, including discounts and special offers in some of the restaurants and hotels of the city. For additional information and reservations, please contact our Tourist Offices.*
Women’s History of Alcalá
International Women’s Day is annually held on March 8, and Alcalá’s City Council
proposes a dramatized tour that merges the relevant role of women in the history of
the city and the opportunity of visiting the landmarks of its old town. All along the
course, the group will be guided by an actress wearing historical clothes. Itinerary:
Don Quixote’s Women, Antezana and Oidor chapels/The Universes of Cervantes Interpretation Centre. - University and women. María Isidra de Guzmán, San Diego
Square. – Literature: Saint Teresa of Jesus, Antezana Hospital inner courtyard. – A
queen born in Alcalá: Catherine of Aragon, Bernardas Square. – The Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus, their first interview, Palacio Square.

A GREEN CITY
The historical centre of Alcalá de Henares, with its towers, pinnacles and belfries,
has one of the most famous colonies of storks in Spain, giving thus a special charm
and value to its rich heritage.
On the other hand, the river Henares is a special area of conservation with about 12
km and located mostly in the urban area and offers a wide range of activities for
those who love nature.
Alcalá has many routes for nature lovers around the river Henares and the Parque
de los Cerros. These activities invite us to enjoy nature thanks to its climate, with

area. This place has been chosen to develop a great number of environmental education activities. In the park there are four marked routes: Route of Tayares, the
Green Gate, the Moorish Castle path and the Ecce Homo. The Arabic Castle let us
admire the remains of the fortress of Qal'at Abd-Salam. This castle was built in the
mid-ninth century and represents a privileged place to witness, from the hills surrounding the city, the beauty of the riparian vegetation
These routes can be done on foot or by bicycle. We offer the possibility to rent bikes

GASTRONOMY
GASTRONOMY
Alcalá de Henares offers a varied gastronomy that combines the traditional Spanish food
with the avant-garde cuisine, not to mention those delicious dishes appearing in the Don
Quixote. The variety of restaurants covers all price ranges and menus, special offers for
groups, as well as catering companies specialised in business services and restaurants in
the historical centre where, thanks to the decoration, you will feel transported to the times
of Cervantes. A world of possibilities thought to enjoy the city. In addition, the city plays an
important role in the Community, thanks to the remarkable events developed by its catering establishments in collaboration with the Department of Tourism. The Gastronomic Week,
in February, the popular Tapas Route and the Cervantes Gastronomic Days, held around
the commemoration of Cervantes’ birthday, are a good example of this type of gastronomy
in the city. Alcalá Culinary Contest “Alcalá Gastronómica”, has has been held since 2014 in
Alcalá de Henares.
As regards desserts, patisseries are really famous in the city and have always remained
over the years and created unique handicraft traditions, as the caramel-coated almonds of
the Clarisas Convent of San Diego Square. This convent is a place of great tradition, where
candies are handmade by nuns. The costrada (seedcake, candied with melted sugar,
beaten eggs, and grated bread) and rosquillas are also among the typical products offered by our pastry, which will sweeten the visitor’s stay in the city.
110
SHOPPING
Shopping can be the ideal complement to your stay in Alcalá de Henares. The city

Square, now called Cervantes Square and main point of life activity in Alcalá de
Henares. There is a wide range of activities that will remark the visitor’s experience

Cardinal Cisneros in 1510 and has wonderful views to the Trilingual Patio of the University of Alcalá de Henares. All these buildings are part of the historical monuments
of the city, considered World Heritage by UNESCO in 1998.The Parador is in Colegio
Street where the main minor colleges of the city were located.
122
The Dominican college-convent of Santo Tomás is an old XVII century building,
founded by Don Carlos de Mendoza, dean of the Cathedral of Toledo. The convent
was built in brick and masonry stone. It was used afterwards as a jail. The Parador
consists of a church with a cloister attached to it, according to the scheme of the
Spanish convent architecture.

In the heart of the city, there is the Main College of San Ildefonso. The building stands
out because of its monumental Plateresque façade, built by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón between 1541 and 1553.
Getting into the building, we find its old College Yard, located around the Conference
Halls. Its granite arches and columns represent the academic strength of figures as
Francisco de Quevedo, Santo Tomás de Villanueva and Lope de Vega.

Located near the station of Alcala de Henares, Laredo Palace is undoubtedly a
beautiful architectural caprice. This unique building was opened in 1884 and was
designed by Mayor Manuel José de Laredo, architect, painter, illustrator and
member of the Royal Academy of Arts of San Fernando. It successfully combines
Neo-Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance, Pompeii and modernists elements with genuine
antiquities.
The inside is a world of surprises. Rooms are inspired by the Alhambra of Granada
with coffered ceilings, plasterwork and tiles on the walls. The Kings Hall is a copy of
the old hall Santorcaz Castle. On the
walls there are figures of various kings
of Castile and the doom roof is one of
the world’s oldest planetariums, a
wonderful set that catches the visitor’s
attention.

Production: 91 877 19 50 (ext. 205) [email protected]
The Comedy Courtyard, a jewel of the typical XVII century architecture and the old
Cervantes’ Theatre, is one of the oldest public theatres in the western world, one of
the first Italian-style theatres conserved in Spain (1831), which also has the peculiarity of having an elliptical floor.
Since 1945 it was used as a cinema (the popular "small theatre") and finally closed
in 1971. Restored after 1981, and since April 2, 2005, the Abadía Theatre Foundation, on behalf of the Community of Madrid, is responsible for managing and scheduling the Comedy Courtyard of Alcalá de Henares.
Also, if available and thanks to its restoration and facilities, the Comedy Courtyard
can host events of different nature with the necessary technical and audiovisual
equipment.
It is located in the historical centre, very close to one of the most representative monuments of Alcalá de Henares.

The Hospital of Santa María la Rica is an
example of heritage restoration.
The building dates from the XV century and
early XV, and remained as charity hospital
thanks to the Confraternity of Santa María
la Rica until the XIX century. Charity Hospitals and Confraternities usually appear related to the protection of urban societies.
One of these orders was that of Santa
María la Rica, which started in the late XIII
or early XIV century. The Brotherhood of
Santa María la Rica kept these activities
through the Hospital until the XIX century.
The building was beautifully restored in the
early years of this century.

It was sponsored by the Society of Alcala de Henares, Condueños. The theatre was
built in just one month in 1888. Throughout its history, it has been theatre, variety
lounge, cinema in the 60's and 70's and bingo hall, until the city of Alcalá decided
to recover its original function in the 80’s and integrate it into the network of theaters
of the Community of Madrid. Its facade is one of the few examples of modernism in
the city.
Its picturesque interior transports us to
XIX century theatrical evenings and
has served for the filming of several series and commercials.
